A Moment Of Silence

By Emmanuel Ortiz

Posted September 17, 2009 --

Before I start this poem,
I'd like to ask you to join me
In a moment of silence
In honor of those who died in the World Trade Center and the
Pentagon last September 11th.

I would also like to ask you
To offer up a moment of silence
For all of those who have been harassed, imprisoned,
disappeared, tortured, raped, or killed in retaliation for those strikes
For the victims in both Afghanistan and the U.S.

And if I could just add one more thing...
A full day of silence
For the tens of thousands of Palestinians who have died at the
hands of U.S.-backed Israeli
forces over decades of occupation.
Six months of silence for the million and-a-half Iraqi people,
mostly children, who have died of
malnourishment or starvation as a result of an 11-year U.S.
embargo against the country.

Before I begin this poem,
Two months of silence for the Blacks under Apartheid in South Africa,
Where homeland security made them aliens in their own country.
Nine months of silence for the dead in Hiroshima and Nagasaki,
Where death rained down and peeled back every layer of
concrete, steel, earth and skin
And the survivors went on as if alive.
A year of silence for the millions of dead in Vietnam - a people,
not a war - for those who
know a thing or two about the scent of burning fuel, their
relatives' bones buried in it, their babies born of it.
A year of silence for the dead in Cambodia and Laos, victims of
a secret war ... ssssshhhhh....
Say nothing
we don't want them to learn that they are dead.
Two months of silence for the decades of dead in Colombia,
Whose names, like the corpses they once represented,
have piled up and slipped off our tongues.

Before I begin this poem.
An hour of silence for El Salvador ...
An afternoon of silence for Nicaragua ...
Two days of silence for the Guatemaltecos ...
None of whom ever knew a moment of peace in their living years.
45 seconds of silence for the 45 dead at Acteal, Chiapas

25 years of silence for the hundred million Africans who found
their graves far deeper in the ocean than any building could poke into
the sky.
There will be no DNA testing or dental records to identify their remains.
And for those who were strung and swung from the heights of
sycamore trees in the south, the north, the east, and the west...

100 years of silence...
For the hundreds of millions of Indigenous peoples from this half of
right here,
Whose land and lives were stolen,
In postcard-perfect plots like Pine Ridge, Wounded Knee, Sand Creek,
Fallen Timbers, or the Trail of Tears.
Names now reduced to innocuous magnetic poetry on the
refrigerator of our consciousness ...

So you want a moment of silence?
And we are all left speechless
Our tongues snatched from our mouths
Our eyes stapled shut
A moment of silence
And the poets have all been laid to rest
The drums disintegrating into dust.

Before I begin this poem,
You want a moment of silence
You mourn now as if the world will never be the same
And the rest of us hope to hell it won't be.
Not like it always has
been.

Because this is not a 9/11 poem.
This is a 9/10 poem,
It is a 9/9 poem,
A 9/8 poem,
A 9/7 poem
This is a 1492 poem.

This is a poem about what causes poems like this to be written.
And if this is a 9/11 poem, then:
This is a September 11th poem for Chile, 1971.
This is a September 12th poem for Steven Biko in South Africa, 1977.
This is a September 13th poem for the brothers at Attica Prison, New
York, 1971.
This is a September 14th poem for Somalia, 1992.
This is a poem for every date that falls to the ground in ashes
This is a poem for the 110 stories that were never told
The 110 stories that history chose not to write in textbooks
The 110 stories that CNN, BBC, The New York Times, and Newsweek ignored.
This is a poem for interrupting this program.

And still you want a moment of silence for your dead?
We could give you lifetimes of empty:
The unmarked graves
The lost languages
The uprooted trees and histories
The dead stares on the faces of nameless children
Before I start this poem we could be silent forever
Or just long enough to hunger,
For the dust to bury us
And you would still ask us
For more of our silence.

If you want a moment of silence
Then stop the oil pumps
Turn off the engines and the televisions
Sink the cruise ships
Crash the stock markets
Unplug the marquee lights,
Delete the instant messages,
Derail the trains, the light rail transit.

If you want a moment of silence, put a brick through the window of
Taco Bell,
And pay the workers for wages lost.
Tear down the liquor stores,
The townhouses, the White Houses, the jailhouses, the
Penthouses and the Playboys.

If you want a moment of silence,
Then take it
On Super Bowl Sunday,
The Fourth of July
During Dayton's 13 hour sale
Or the next time your white guilt fills the room where my beautiful
people have gathered.

You want a moment of silence
Then take it NOW,
Before this poem begins.
Here, in the echo of my voice,
In the pause between goosesteps of the second hand,
In the space between bodies in embrace,
Here is your silence,
Take it.
But take it all...
Don't cut in line.
Let your silence begin at the beginning of crime.
But we,
Tonight we will keep right on singing
For our dead.

It wasnʻt enough for Ikaika Hussey to become involved in the move to demilitarize Hawai`i. Nor was it enough when he decided to run for a seat in Hawai`iʻs legislature.

Next, he decided to create the popular social networking site, Maoliworld.

And finally he got into the news business himself publishing the Hawai`i Independent.

So what drives Ikaika Hussey to do all these things?

HAS THE US TAKEOVER OF HAWAI`I BEEN A SUCCESS?

Hawaiians have suffered since the first western contact in 1778.

Western diseases, to which they had no immunity, decimated their numbers.

At the time of western contact, some 800,000 people inhabited the Hawaiian Islands.

By 1805 that number had been halved.

By 1853 there were only 71,000 Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian people in the islands.

Within 100 years of western contact, the Hawaiian population had been reduced by nearly 90 percent.

According to the 2000 census, the numbers of people who claim some native Hawaiian ancestry have increased to over 400,000.

But only 239,000 live in Hawai`i and they are the poorest, most locked-up population in the state.

Although they only make up about 20 percent of the state's population, they make up 39 percent of the state's prison population, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

And they are 37 percent of the state's homeless population.

Ending The US Occupation & Restoring Independence To The Hawaiian Kingdom Is The Only Right To Correct These Wrongs.

Sunday, September 11, 2011, 3pm Panel on APEC

Sunday, September 11, 2011, 3pm
Panel on APEC

Panelists: Kit Grant, ACLU
Laura Lyons, Professor, UH-Manoa

Join us on Sunday afternoon for our second forum focusing on APEC.

Why is APEC meeting in Hawai`i? Because it's trying to escape large protests. APEC has been met with huge protests almost everywhere else it has met, and every APEC meeting is marred by images of police brutalizing protesters in the streets. In 2010 thousands of protesters in Japan protested against APEC's endorsement of nuclear energy, among other issues. They were met by more than 20,000 police.

Hawai`i is one of the most isolated spots on the planet. It has a small and relatively pacified population. Yet the City & County of Honolulu has budgeted more than $47,000 for "security." HPD has a new "Civil Affairs" division that is already monitoring protesters, and a climate of fear is being created. A debate is raging over "what to do with the homeless."

Many are disgusted by all of this but are afraid to act. What rights do protesters have? Is it legal to photograph the police? Will there be legal observers at protests? Kit Grant, a staff person with ACLU will address all of these questions and more! Come with your questions.

Make your plans now to stand up against imperialist globalization, and be wise about doing it!

Why Do Thousands Protest APEC Whenever They Meet?

APEC boasts that "APEC benefits everyone" and the University of Hawai`i administration is parroting the lie. Huge signs welcome APEC to UH-Manoa, and students are being encouraged to become involved in APEC. But not everyone at UH is going along with the program and many professors are instead promoting a spirit of debate and criticism. This is a welcome development and Revolution Books has invited many of them to participate in forums intended educate people about APEC's real agenda. Laura Lyons is one of them.

Laura Lyons will speak to why "free trade" and "deregulation" (APEC's mantra) are such hated words for millions of people - and especially the poor. Laura is the co-author of "Cultural Critique and the Global Corporation." She is currently teaching a graduate class on globalization and is an engaging speaker.

Join us on Sunday. Check out our growing collection of pamphlets and books on globalization. Pick up a DVD of our first forum on APEC. And pick up a stack of World Can't Wait-Hawai`i's brochure on APEC for your friends and acquaintances.9334361283?profile=original

While this concept of “unity” sounds nice, it is not necessary or realistic to reclaim a nation.

After all, how “unified” is the United States?

In America’s “two-party system,” aren’t those two parties diametrically opposed over nearly every issue?

And what about the subdivisions of the many factions? Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Conservative Democrats, Liberal Democrats, Conservative Republicans, Liberal Republicans, Independents, Socialists, etc.

If unification is the ideal criteria, shouldn’t all these American factions be in “unity” or in “agreement” before the US makes any important decision or takes any action or conducts its operations?

Have you ever watched the US congress or the British parliament in session? Do they exemplify unity?

If you really think about it, democracy is the opposite of unity, while only dictatorships demand unity.

So why should Hawai`i have to conform to a standard that no other nation, not even the US, is required to uphold?

A Free Hawai`i is the unifying cause. The various factions are already united in what matters most — the burning desire to see Hawai`i restored as an independent, sovereign nation.

PhotobucketPhotobucketBACKGROUNDThe Army plans to fly helicopters out of Pohakuloa Training Area to landing zones (LZs) on the upper slopes of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa to train for Afghanistan. The LZs are on conservation land--ceded land which is supposed to be held in trust for all. An average of nine flight hours a day (and into the night) are planned for dates in October. After that, more may be plannedSEND E-MAIL ASAP (before Sept. 9th) TOAdaline.F.Cummings@hawaii.govSUBJECTVote AGAINST C-4 (HAMET EA/ FONSI) and C-5 (HAMET permit) at BLNR 9-9-11My sample testimony belowDear BLNR members,Hearings should be held on Hawaii Island concerning this military taking of public lands.Nevertheless, at your September 9 meeting, please cut this whole process and vote AGAINST Army High-Altitude Mountainous Environment Training (HAMET) on two items· C-4: accepting the Final Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact· C-5: granting a Right of Entry permit. Our organization does not want the U.S. training anywhere to do to others what the U.S. has already done to Hawaii: overthrow and occupy its government and nation, desecrate its sacred sites, and contaminate its air, land, water, people, plants, and animals with a wide range of military toxins. We want the U.S. to stop bombing Hawaii and clean up its opala (rubbish). All of our mothers teach us that you clean up your old mess before you even think about making a new mess. The military needs a mother and you the BLNR need to act as a surrogate. No more military taking! No more military mess. It's long past time for military clean up NOT further build up!The military/industrial complex is out of control in Hawaii. Hundreds of thousands of acres of land (and additional near shore waters) are littered with live explosives and other military toxins.Actions needed:1. Depleted Uranium (DU) radiation contamination exists on State leased land at the Pohakuloa Training Area. The lease doesn't allow for that. Cancel that lease but first make the military fund comprehensive independent testing and monitoring (with citizen oversight) to determine the full extent of the contamination. And make them clean up their mess, not a 3rd rate job like Kaho'olawe, but first rate to habitable standards.2. The Hawaii County Council on July 2, 2008 passed resolution 639-08 by a vote of 8-1. That resolution called for 8 action points but #1 was stopping "all live firing exercises and other activities at the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) that creates dust until there is an assessment and clean up of the depleted uranium already present." The military has ignored the Council's call for action. All 8 points!. Now you the BLNR have an opportunity to act.. The proposed military helicopter training will create dust and likely spread the radiation already present at PTA. Ground those helicopters. Vote against HAMET. In doing so, please be mindful of the military history of lying about it's impacts. The military got a state BLNR lease in Hilo's watershed --the Waiakea forest back in the 60s, to do weather testing. The military lied. They were not doing weather testing. They were secretly testing chemical and biological weapons, including deadly Sarin nerve gas --1/50 of a drop kills you. When the late Patsy Mink disclosed the secret testing, all hell broke loose and the BLNR did the right thing. The BLNR canceled the Army lease.3. Today, the military is firing upwards of 14 million live-rounds annually at PTA, which is a radioactive contaminated base They are creating a multi-billion dollar mess on State leased lands and you the BLNR are allowing them to do it without even requiring bonding for clean up. Do the right thing. Cancel that lease! I raise this to emphasize the cumulative impact of the military mess. Do not allow 1 further square inch of state lands for military purposes.I've used the following analogy in opposition to the TMT on Mauna Kea, but it equally applies to the military's HAMET request. I call it The Big picture --"One more for the road!" The U.S. and Hawaii's economy has become addicted to war. The truth is we have become military/industrial drunks, believing that one more military/warfare drink won't hurt us. In fact, many believe it is good for us. One more for the road. One more for jobs. One more for training in "full spectrum dominance" in the war for empire disguised as a war against terrorism. One more for perpetual war to make peace. We are either still a drunk in denial or believe in an illusion. One more military drink on the road to global military and economic destruction is not the answer. The first step in the 12 step program of recovery for an alcoholic is to admit to addiction and then seek help from Ke Akua and others to restore what is pono. The same applies to military/industrial drunks.I urge you the BLNR to Honor and Protect Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. It's time to train for peace not war if we are going to survive as a species. Instead of approving HAMET, demand military clean up, cancel the military leases at PTA, and recommend the military drunks (Governor Abercrombie included) go to 12 step Rehab!Aloha!--Jim AlbertiniMalu ‘Aina Center for Non-violent Education & ActionP.O.Box ABKurtistown, Hawai’i 96760phone: 808-966-7622email: JA@interpac.netVisit us on the web at: www.malu-aina.orgPhotobucketPhotobucket

Hawaiian Kingdom mo`i or leaders were wise people. Queen Lili`uokalani, whose birthday we celebrate this weekend was no exception.

As we look around the world today at the upheaval in the Middle East bringing death and destruction, we only need think back at the wise actions Hawai`iʻs Lili`u took to spare her beloved Hawaiian Kingdom that same outcome.

At great personal cost to herself as the illegal US takeover of Hawai`i occurred, she very wisely took steps that not only avoided bloodshed, but protected the legality and sovereignty of the Hawaiian Kingdom until its government could be legally restored.

Sadly, even though that did not occur in her lifetime, it is nonetheless happening today, as we honor Hawai`iʻs queen for her brave and patriotic acts for her `aina and people.

Hawai`iʻs is experiencing many changes today, not the least of which is the restoration of our government, and Ikaika Hussey is one of those chronicling the changes he sees.

As publisher of the Hawai`i independent, Hawai`iʻs premier online newspaper, he journals the rapid developments not only in and around Honolulu, but throughout the Hawaiian Kingdom.

What heʻs seeing amazed us, so if you want to discover the “whats” and “whys” behind the changes, donʻt miss our visit with Ikaika this week in our brand new show on

“I Lili`uokalani, by the Grace of God and under the Constitution of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Queen, do hereby solemnly protest against any and all acts done against myself and the Constitutional Government of the Hawaiian Kingdom by certain persons claiming to have established a Provisional Government of and for this Kingdom.

That I yield to the superior force of the United States of America whose Minister Plenipotentiary, His Excellency John L. Stevens, has caused United States troops to be landed a Honolulu and declared that he would support the Provisional Government.

Now to avoid any collision of armed forces, and perhaps the loss of life, I do this under protest and impelled by said force yield my authority until such time as the Government of the United States shall, upon facts being presented to it, undo the action of its representatives and reinstate me in the authority which I claim as the Constitutional Sovereign of the Hawaiian Islands.”

Aloha members of Ka Lei Maile Ali‘i Hawaiian Civic Club (KLMA)!

We have just reported our membership roster to the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs for year 2011.  I want to personally thank you for keeping the voice of our Queen Lili‘uokalani heard and her works seen by the people of Hawai‘i and the world.

We are gearing up to present the statement of our kupuna to the people of the United States in October 2012 where we will express a part of our history and culture on the Mall in Washington D.C.  KLMA plans to display our Ku‘e signs on a section of the grassy mall close to the Capitol Dome for visitors to see.  We will also have docents available to explain the 1897 story of our kupuna.

In support of this project, KLMA member Sylvia Krewson-Reck has very generously offered her inventory of 400 of The Kumulipo An Hawaiian Creation Myth to KLMA to use as a fundraiser.  The book is a 94 page, 5.5x8, paperback.  The Kumulipo was composed by Keaulumoku in 1700 and translated by Lili‘uokalani during her imprisonment in 1895 at ‘Iolani Palace and later at Washington Place in Honolulu.  The work was completed in Washington, D.C. on May 20, 1897.  The book that is available to KLMA was published in 1997 by Kimo Campbell, editor/publisher of Pueo Press.

I would like to request your personal support to make this story of the creation of our people available to the public.  The cost of the book is $11.00.  Sylvia is allowing KLMA to keep 100% of all earnings on the sale of this book.  This is a huge gift to us.  She does this in the belief that our work and tribute to our queen is important.  If you purchase ten (10) books the cost will be $100.  That is a savings of $10.00.  Class of mail will be least expensive Media Mail which is shipped by barge and then by train or other ground transportation.  West coast mail takes up to three weeks and east coast mail takes up to six weeks.  No air shipment.  Shipment for one book is $3.00.  Shipment for 2 – 10 books is $4.00

The people of the U.S. do not know our history.  May I suggest that you gift your local library with a copy of this book?  You could ask the library to feature it in the local library newsletter.

Piilani Kaopuiki is handling the sale of the book.  Please contact her with your order as soon as possible.  She will get it to you in time for the upcoming gift giving season.  Make your checks out to Ka Lei Maile Ali‘i HCC and send your order plus shipping to Piilani Kaopuiki, 838 Hauoli Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96826.

Mahalo a nui loa!

HAS SOMEONE STOLEN YOUR FAMILY'S CAR?

Your family car is like the sovereignty of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Your car would make anyone wealthy who could occupy it.

The theft is clearly unlawful, even against the their own laws and constitution.

So after generations of denying and obfuscating the issue, the thieves finally admit they stole your car.

They concede that it's really not their car (Apology Bill, US law 103-150,) that they really don't have any title to it, but they declare how much they love the car, and how the grandchildren of the victims can't operate the car anymore anyway.

They also say since they have had the stolen car for so long, they now have a claim to it.

They have even repainted the car (Statehood) and done some maintenance.

And now they want to compromise.

They offer the grandchildren (you) the hubcaps, and when the you refuse, they try and offer you the wheels (Hawaiian Homelands.)

Then they offer to let you drive the car on Sundays (New Hawaiian Nation OHA is now proposing.)

Whoever gets title to the car is vastly wealthy.

That's why they've tried to brainwash you, telling you there is no title to the car anymore.

Yet valid title does still exist and international law as well as Hawai`i and US laws say the car still belongs to you and your family.

What does it take to get it back?

Demand the entire car back. Then jump in the driver's seat and drive away.
