Growth is a two-edged sword and thatʻs especially true when it comes to Hawai`i.

After over fifty years of development and growth which has been detrimental, more are now focused on the kind that is actually sourced in ways of the Hawaiian culture.

Ways that can actually sustain and nurture rather than deprive and steal from us.

Amy Brinker saw this right away when she discovered after relocating to Hawai`i that it was illegal to sell or even give away hand-pounded poi.

Ikaika Hussey has seen it for years and been involved in trying to change it.

What are both doing today to assure a cure - to make sure we donʻt have more of the same old game? See for yourself all this week on

“ Indigenizing The Law - A Visit With Amy Brinker”

When first year law student Amy Brinker moved from Galveston, Texas to attend the University of Hawai`i, she discovered to sell or even give away hand-pounded poi, the staple food of Hawaiians, was illegal. New to Hawai`i and not Hawaiian herself but wanting to make a difference, she did the only thing she could - she set out to change the law. Before long she found herself meeting with legislators who were asking her to craft a bill they could pass. Donʻt miss our interview with Amy as she tells the story of her fight to legalize hand pounded poi and the amazing changes she has now brought to all Hawai`i

Life Harder Under US Occupation
DSC_3153.jpg

In the 1980s, Hawai`i gained the enviable reputation of providing medical insurance to the highest percentage of residents of any state.

Despite higher profits for many businesses, jobs are scarce and most of the available work pays minimum wage or close to it.

In some cases, the lives of the working poor are worse than the unemployed.
Among other things, they don't qualify for state financial assistance or full food stamp benefits.

Today most of Hawai`i island, Molokai, Lana`i and Kaua`i are economic wastelands with little opportunity to make a decent living.

On Kaua`i workers often share apartments or small houses with several other workers because rents are too expensive for one or two individuals to afford.

On every island married couples with children often work two jobs each to make ends meet - if they are fortunate enough to find that many jobs, even at minimum wage.

Hawai`i imports almost all its food from the mainland.

Locally-grown food is expensive due to high land prices where tract homes are built by foreign land speculators.

WHO REALLY OWNS LAND IN HAWAI`I TODAY?

Clear title, regarding legitimate legal ownership of land in Hawai`i is a topic quickly becoming an issue in the political and commercial areas.

With more lands being "quiet titled" in the courts with the aid of foreign laws (US and fake state of Hawai`i) illegally imposed against the rightful and legal owners of these lands with a judicial system aiding and abetting in these crimes, it's no wonder developers are eager to cash in big time by building luxury homes for rich foreigners throughout Hawai`i.

To this day, land titles in Hawai`i continue to carry the original royal patent from the Mahele of 1848.

If the US government or fake state of Hawai`i and their citizens rightfully have clear title to these lands, then why hasnʻt the US Patent Office replaced the royal patents?

Answer - Each royal patent has been "adjudicated," making them all a legal decree. When purchasing land, a "warranty deed" is issued instead, not clear title per se.

It's no different than if someone steals your car and attempts to sell it to someone else - they can't convey the "pink slip" to the new owner because they never had it in the first place - they're simply selling stolen property.

And thatʻs why there is no clear title today to land in Hawai`i - itʻs all legally still Hawaiian Kingdom lands.

Puerto Rico has a giant statue of Christopher Columbus that has been laying around for over 20 years.  Suddenly there is renewed interest in erecting this statue.  They are currently considering 2 locations.  One is a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico which they think will boost tourism.  The other site is the capital city of San Juan, which already has a statue of Columbus in a square down in Old San Juan.  Please sign this petition to help to whatever we can to see that this genocidal maniac is not honored in the lands of the people who he enslaved.

There is also a sample letter that can be copied, pasted, signed and sent to the Governor of Puerto Rico or Congressman Bonilla at the same address.  PLEASE, sign our petition and if it isn't too much trouble, send the letter as well.  We need to stop this.

Mail letters to:  El Capitolio  *  Ponce de Leon Avenue  *  San Juan, PR 00901  *  Attn:  Representative David Bonilla

Dear Sir

It has come to our intention that you are seeking to have a gigantic statue of Christopher Columbus erected on an island off the coast of Puerto Rico. We believe this to be a gross error in judgment based on the history of the region.

Many people are unaware of the true legacy of Christopher Columbus. We are taught that he was a courageous sailor who set out to find a new route to India as well as gold and spices. Some people even think his dispelled the myth that the world was flat, although that had been disproved long before Columbus was born.

Columbus is giving credit for ‘discovering America’ although his exploration was mostly limited to the Caribbean islands.

Times were different then… Columbus was Catholic and the Catholic Church allowed for the enslavement of ‘heathens’ and the taking of their land. Everyone knows that upon Columbus’s arrival in the ’New World’, he was greeted by locals who brought him gifts and food. Who were these people? When Columbus got off his ship and was greeted by them, and then planted his flag, did they understand the significance of that act? Did Columbus ever stop to consider those lands weren’t vacant and available for the taking?

Did those people (the Taino) just lay down and allow Columbus and his crews to take/have their land, or when they realized Columbus’s intentions, did they fight to keep their ancestral homeland?

Columbus had written in his journal that the Taino were strong, well-built people and that with his weapons and 50 men he could enslave the entire population. His intention was always to take the land by force. In the journal that Columbus meticulously kept, he mentions gold repeatedly… always asking the locals where it can be found and bragging when he traded worthless little items such as beads and bells for gold.

If you knew the history of Columbus in the islands you would know that his ship, the famous Santa Maria, crashed on Christmas Day in 1492. The Taino helped him retrieve his goods and all the wood used in the construction of the ship, which was later used to build a fort, La Navidad, on the island now known as Hispaniola.

Columbus went back to Spain, told of his great discovery and returned with 17 ships, 1,200 armed men, cannons and livestock with the intention of colonizing the island and looking for gold.

The Taino resisted and the two groups fought, one to keep their ancestral homeland and culture, the other to conquer and profit.

The methods used to conquer the Taino were atrocious. The Taino were tortured, starved and worked to death. They were killed in the most horrific ways… cut in half with swords, hung in groups of 13 representing the Savior and the Apostles, roasted alive over fires, while others were chased down by starved attack dogs who were trained to brutally kill. Columbus forced the Taino to mine for gold for him. Those who refused were killed, those who did not meet their quotas had their hands cut off and were left to bleed to death.

When Columbus failed to meet his financial goals, he took shiploads of Taino back to Seville, Spain to be sold at the slave market for profit. Columbus was the very first slave trader in the Americas. Many Taino died on those voyages and their bodies were thrown overboard. The scribes of the time said it was possible to find your way to the New World by following the trail of bodies in the ocean. Millions died as greed and brutality brought slavery, death and destruction to the Taino people.

Columbus was eventually arrested on his 3rd voyage and returned to Spain in chains for being a ‘poor governor’ of the island.

Sadly, many people don’t know the truth about Columbus although it is there if you look, and the myth continues that he was some kind of hero. Worldwide there is only one person with more statues than Columbus and that is Jesus Christ.

But, times are changing and seventeen US states no longer celebrate Columbus Day. It is the only disputed federal holiday. There will be a day when it is no longer a holiday.

A study done at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez showed that 61% of all Puerto Rican people have indigenous mtdna. What kind of ‘indio’ blood do you think that is? Taino of course.

Now that you know the truth about the history of Columbus and the effect it had on the original inhabitants of the island whose DNA still runs in the bloodlines of 61% of the population, can you still justify putting up a statue to honor a man who was a greedy, land-stealing, murderer?

Please, we beg you Congressman Bonilla, be on the right side of history.

Sincerely,

WHO WINS IN A FREE HAWAI`I ? - EVERYONE !

One of the biggest lies perpetuated is when Hawai`i achieves nationhood once again it will be at the expense of everyone else.

But
no one will be kicked out; their businesses seized or their homes and property confiscated.

Instead,
everyone, Hawaiians and all others, will be citizens of the sovereign and independent Nation of Hawai`i.

The Hawaiian Nation included people of many ethnic backgrounds that were loyal citizens before the illegal overthrow and it will be so again.

The truth is a sovereign Hawaiian nation will need the contributions and talents of all of its citizens to remain viable in the world. Hawaiians would be no better than the very supremacists that overthrew and occupied them were they to divide people by race.

Hawaiians have always been inclusive, not exclusive.

How would this be accomplished politically given a civil war resulted the last time a state tried to leave the US?

Unlike the southern US states, the Kingdom of Hawai`i and its citizens never agreed to become part of the United States in the first place.

Therefore a move for Hawai`i to secede from the US would be both unnecessary and inappropriate.

Much like removing the top coat of paint to reveal the one underneath, the US Congress, after consultation between Hawaiians and the US at the level of state to state, could simply enact a US federal law that dissolves the entity known as the “state government” in Hawai`i.

What would be left in its place is what has existed all along anyway without interruption – the Nation of Hawai`i.

Lakota Nation secedes from the USA

Tohono O’Odham Nation and 19 others may follow

Lakota NationThe Lakota Nation has withdrawn from all treaties with the United States, national leaders said Wednesday. “We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us,” Indian leader Russell Means told reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy at a Washington news conference.

A delegation of Lakota leaders delivered a message to the US State Department on Monday, announcing they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the United States.

They also visited the Bolivian, Chilean, South African and Venezuelan embassies, and will continue on their diplomatic mission and take it overseas in the coming weeks and months, they told the news conference.

Lakota NationThe Lakota Nation includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.

The new country would issue its own passports and driver's licenses. Also, living in the new independent and sovereign nation will be tax-free, provided residents renounce their US citizenship, Russell Means said.

In addition, the Tohono O’Odham Nation and 19 other Indigenous nations declared similar proclamations at the Indigenous Peoples' Border Summit of the Americas that took place last month at the San Xavier District of Arizona. One of the principal resolutions declared at the summit was, "To create and use Indian Nations/tribal passports, identifications, and immigration documents for travel across imposed borders, specifically tribes along settler borders along Mexico and the U.S. and the U.S. and Canada, and to fully reinstate their traditional border crossing rights and abilities."

The history books say Hawaiians and everyone else living in Hawai`i at the time voted overwhelmingly to become the fiftieth US state on August 21, 1959, fifty-two years ago today.

Yet nothing is further from the truth.

Actually only thirty-six percent of all eligible voters voted in the 1959 statehood vote. And yes, ninety-four percent of that thirty-six percent did vote for statehood.

But who were those voters? They were overwhelmingly Americans who had settled in Hawai`i to live, along with the US military and their family members.

The truth is, sixty-four percent of all eligible voters never voted at all.

And the vast majority of Hawaiians boycotted the vote entirely.

So a small minority voted for statehood, and those voters overwhelmingly were foreign settlers and the US military.

And ever since that tiny minority voted, the US imprint on Hawai`i has been large.

Amy Brinker is someone who has worked diligently to break that hold in one very big way - to legalize the sale of hand-pounded poi, the staple of Hawai`iʻs indigenous diet.

TMT on Mauna Kea:
The Big Picture -- "One more for the road!"

This week has seen news of the contested case hearing in Hilo over the construction of a Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) atop Mauna Kea.  Below is a slightly revised version of testimony by Jim Albertini against the TMT originally made in Feb. 2011.

I am opposed to any and all permits for the TMT on Mauna Kea.  I believe the issues of expanding military training and industrial development on Mauna Kea is a microcosm for our fragile world.  Our planet is now facing profound life threatening climate change due to the cumulative effects of global industrial development.  No single, particular, industrial development can be said to have caused the global tipping point.  But it is clear our planet's ecosystem is now in dire straights due to the cumulative effects of industrial development, and the crisis is accelerating.

As we all know, Mauna Kea is sacred.  It is a revered temple by the Kanaka Maoli, the native people of this place, and native people around the Pacific.  It is a fragile environment, designated conservation district, that already has suffered from extensive industrial development.  We give lip service to these facts but then we go forward with more industrial development on Mauna Kea.   Today, we have the lure of TMT --  bigger-is-better, more jobs, world class astronomy status, major PR efforts, and community pay offs  by the vested economic and scientific community.  But all of this has not stopped the growing tension of science vs the sacred, industrial development vs environmental preservation.

It is time for Hawaii and our world to affirm the sacred over economic vested interests, environmental preservation over further industrial development.  It is time to restore our balance with Ke Akua and nature, to become pono.  We have become so far out of balance that it is difficult for us to see clearly, to see ourselves as we truly are.  In many ways, we have become military/industrial drunks, believing that one more military/ industrial drink won't hurt us.  In fact, many believe it is good for us.  One more for the road.  One more for jobs, one more for "full spectrum dominance" and world class astronomy.

One more industrial drink on the road to global military/industrial destruction is not the answer.   More industrial development is not the solution to the problems of industrial development.  To find our staggering, drunken, way home to what is pono, is not an easy task.  But one thing is clear: the means we use must be in line with the end that we seek. The means and ends must cohere.  Industry can no longer dominate the temple and the fragile environment.  Those days are over, long gone.  Non-violence is a sacred principle we better relearn quickly if we are going to survive as a species.

The meaning of non-violence is clear for those who have eyes to see our present situation.  No more military/industrial drinking on Mauna Kea!  It is time for clear vision and clear speaking, followed by clear action.  The first step in the 12 step program of recovery for an alcoholic is to admit to addiction and then  seek help from Ke Akua and others to restore what is pono.  The same applies to military/industrial drunks.  Honor and protect Mauna Kea.  No TMT on Mauna Kea.

Send the Military/Industrial Drunks to 12 Step Rehab!

1. Mourn all victims of violence. 2. Reject war as a solution. 3. Defend civil liberties. 4. Oppose all discrimination, anti-Islamic, anti-Semitic, etc. 5. Seek peace through justice in Hawai`i and around the world.

WERE HAWAIIANS THE ONLY ONES WRONGED?

The forceful takeover of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893, adversely affected a country’s government, its lands and its citizens, not only the members of a single ethnic group.

It was the Hawaiian Kingdom — a nation — that was taken, not the aboriginal people — the kanaka maoli (what the US and the state of Hawai`i insist on calling, “Native Hawaiians.”)

Yes, kanaka maoli were harmed by the loss of their nation, but so were many non-aboriginal subject/citizens of the Hawaiian Kingdom - Asians, Caucasian, Polynesians and so forth.

This is a crucial point. When a nation is stolen, all the citizens of that nation are deprived of their country, not only the aboriginal people.

Both occupying governments, the US federal and its puppet, the fake state of Hawai`i either assert or presume in their laws and policies, that the takeover of 1893 affected only “Native Hawaiians.”

By purposefully limiting their culpability to “Native Hawaiians,” the US carefully conceals the true scope of the problem, presenting it as a domestic, localized, racially defined problem, rather than the violation of the unalienable rights of the citizens of a recognized sovereign foreign nation.

WAS THE HAWAIIAN KINGDOM HIJACKED?

Of the 40,000 non Kingdom subjects in Hawai`i at the time of the illegal 1898 overthrow, only 1,928 or so were U.S. nationals as documented by the 1900 census.

They represented less than 3% of the entire population.

The rest of the non U.S. aliens were not supportive of the illegal annexation of Hawai`i by the US.

This means that less than 3% of the population, all of them US aliens, hijacked the Hawaiian Nation against the wishes of almost everybody else.

Pray for Mauna Kea: TMT Contested Case begins this week

Aloha kakou!

The big day is upon us! Tomorrow is the first day of the contested case hearing on the construction permit for the Thirty-Meter Telescope, the new 18-story, 5-acre telescope proposed for the conservation district of Mauna Kea.  The Mauna Kea hui -- an informal group of concerned community members -- is making the case for why the TMT cannot be legally granted this construction permit.  (View our opening brief here) If you support protecting Mauna Kea from industrialization, then the hui could use your support. (View a quick fact sheet on the impacts of the proposed TMT)

Please send the hui members positive vibes today and throughout the week.  And if can, try stop by -- for any length of time.  The hearing will be held from 9 am to 4 pm, August 15-18th -- additional hearing dates may be announced. The hearing will be held at conference rooms A and B at the Hilo State Building (75 Aupuni St.) everyday except on Tuesday, August 16th, when it will be at Hilo Community College (1175 Manono St), Building 388, Rm. 101. Invite others to come, shirts and signs are great--if you know how to livetweet or facebook from the hearing room, please do so!

If you cannot come to the hearing, then please keep the hui in your thoughts as they proceed through this difficult process.  Although this is the second contested case hearing that this hui has had to engage in (they won the last one in 2007 when the 6 Keck Telescopes were proposed for Mauna Kea), we still appreciate the moral support of those who would like to see the mountain protected from industrialization.

To learn more about the hearing and some of the petitioners that make up the Mauna Kea hui, click here. If you scroll to the bottom of the blog, there are links to meet other hui members.

It has been a long journey to this point. Mahalo pumehana to all who have come along on this path, to fight for what is pono, what is sacred, and what is true -- a future where this and other wahi pana are respected and protected into perpetuity.

Eo Mauna Kea!

Galveston Texas is a long way from Hawai`i, but thatʻs where Amy Brinker came from when she landed here on a trip through Polynesia.

But Hawai`iʻs as far as she ever got. She did what a lot of people do - fell in love with the place, the people and the culture.

But Amy did something else very few others like her actually do - she got involved.

When she discovered it was illegal to sell or even give away hand pounded poi, one of the healthiest foods Hawaiians or anyone can eat, she used her budding legal skills to get the law changed.

And thatʻs when we met her at the Manoa campus of University of Hawai`i. We quickly discovered her dedication and boundless energy to make things right when it comes to poi and Hawai`iʻs culture.
