Aloha members of Ka Lei Maile Ali‘i Hawaiian Civic Club (KLMA)!
We have just reported our membership roster to the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs for year 2011. I want to personally thank you for keeping the voice of our Queen Lili‘uokalani heard and her works seen by the people of Hawai‘i and the world.
We are gearing up to present the statement of our kupuna to the people of the United States in October 2012 where we will express a part of our history and culture on the Mall in Washington D.C. KLMA plans to display our Ku‘e signs on a section of the grassy mall close to the Capitol Dome for visitors to see. We will also have docents available to explain the 1897 story of our kupuna.
In support of this project, KLMA member Sylvia Krewson-Reck has very generously offered her inventory of 400 of The Kumulipo An Hawaiian Creation Myth to KLMA to use as a fundraiser. The book is a 94 page, 5.5x8, paperback. The Kumulipo was composed by Keaulumoku in 1700 and translated by Lili‘uokalani during her imprisonment in 1895 at ‘Iolani Palace and later at Washington Place in Honolulu. The work was completed in Washington, D.C. on May 20, 1897. The book that is available to KLMA was published in 1997 by Kimo Campbell, editor/publisher of Pueo Press.
I would like to request your personal support to make this story of the creation of our people available to the public. The cost of the book is $11.00. Sylvia is allowing KLMA to keep 100% of all earnings on the sale of this book. This is a huge gift to us. She does this in the belief that our work and tribute to our queen is important. If you purchase ten (10) books the cost will be $100. That is a savings of $10.00. Class of mail will be least expensive Media Mail which is shipped by barge and then by train or other ground transportation. West coast mail takes up to three weeks and east coast mail takes up to six weeks. No air shipment. Shipment for one book is $3.00. Shipment for 2 – 10 books is $4.00
The people of the U.S. do not know our history. May I suggest that you gift your local library with a copy of this book? You could ask the library to feature it in the local library newsletter.
Piilani Kaopuiki is handling the sale of the book. Please contact her with your order as soon as possible. She will get it to you in time for the upcoming gift giving season. Make your checks out to Ka Lei Maile Ali‘i HCC and send your order plus shipping to Piilani Kaopuiki, 838 Hauoli Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96826.
Mahalo a nui loa!
Lynette
