Panel on APEC
Panelists: Kit Grant, ACLULaura Lyons, Professor, UH-Manoa
Join us on Sunday afternoon for our second forum focusing on APEC.
Why is APEC meeting in Hawai`i? Because it's trying to escape large protests. APEC has been met with huge protests almost everywhere else it has met, and every APEC meeting is marred by images of police brutalizing protesters in the streets. In 2010 thousands of protesters in Japan protested against APEC's endorsement of nuclear energy, among other issues. They were met by more than 20,000 police.
Hawai`i is one of the most isolated spots on the planet. It has a small and relatively pacified population. Yet the City & County of Honolulu has budgeted more than $47,000 for "security." HPD has a new "Civil Affairs" division that is already monitoring protesters, and a climate of fear is being created. A debate is raging over "what to do with the homeless."
Many are disgusted by all of this but are afraid to act. What rights do protesters have? Is it legal to photograph the police? Will there be legal observers at protests? Kit Grant, a staff person with ACLU will address all of these questions and more! Come with your questions.
Make your plans now to stand up against imperialist globalization, and be wise about doing it!
Why Do Thousands Protest APEC Whenever They Meet?
APEC boasts that "APEC benefits everyone" and the University of Hawai`i administration is parroting the lie. Huge signs welcome APEC to UH-Manoa, and students are being encouraged to become involved in APEC. But not everyone at UH is going along with the program and many professors are instead promoting a spirit of debate and criticism. This is a welcome development and Revolution Books has invited many of them to participate in forums intended educate people about APEC's real agenda. Laura Lyons is one of them.Laura Lyons will speak to why "free trade" and "deregulation" (APEC's mantra) are such hated words for millions of people - and especially the poor. Laura is the co-author of "Cultural Critique and the Global Corporation." She is currently teaching a graduate class on globalization and is an engaging speaker.
Join us on Sunday. Check out our growing collection of pamphlets and books on globalization. Pick up a DVD of our first forum on APEC. And pick up a stack of World Can't Wait-Hawai`i's brochure on APEC for your friends and acquaintances.
