Caution- Watch the Drugs you Take!

Common Drugs Can Cause Cognitive ImpairmentDo you ever take sleeping pills? How about medications to treat bladder leakage? If so, then you may be at risk for cognitive impairment. Yes, you heard right. Seemingly-harmless drugs from Benadryl to Sominex have been linked to losses in cognition, U.S. researchers say. Especially at risk are African-Americans.Researchers from Indiana University School of Medicine, the Regenstrief Institute and Wishard Health Services say the medications -- known as anti-cholinergics, which block acetylcholine, a nervous system neurotransmitter -- are sold under various brand names such as Benadryl, Dramamine, Excedrin PM, Nytol, Sominex, Tylenol PM, Unisom, Paxil, Detrol and Demerol. The drugs are commonly used by older adults to aid sleep and to relieve bladder leakage."We found that taking one anti-cholinergic significantly increased an individual's risk of developing mild cognitive impairment and taking two of these drugs doubled this risk," first author Noll Campbell of Wishard says in a statement. "This is very significant in a population -- African-Americans -- already known to be at high risk for developing cognitive impairment."Campbell and colleagues conducted a six-year observational study of 1,652 Indianapolis-area African-Americans age 70 and older with normal cognitive function when the study began. In addition to monitoring cognition, the investigators tracked all participants' over-the-counter and prescription medications.Dr. Malaz Boustani of the Indiana School of Medicine and a Regenstrief Institute investigator noted taking anti-cholinergics was linked with mild cognitive impairment, but not with Alzheimer's disease, which raises the possibility anti-cholinergic-induced cognitive impairment may be reversible. The findings are published in the journal Neurology.Posted July 15, 2010 2:34 PMSource: YellowBrix, United Press International

During 1996 the congress of the USA and 128 ministers from different
nations extended and acknowledged Hawaii's most favoured nation status.
The Kingdom of Hawaii gained most favoured nation status during
1843 acknowledged by France and England.
The Akaka Bill is a plot by the local Hawaii democratic party
to delete Hawaiians from their international sovereign status
and make them slaves of American Indian Law and the all white/ha'ole
Senate Commission of Indian Affairs.
In order to delete a nation from most favoured nation status under
international law all the nations with MFN status most vote to either
extend the status or delete it. During the 1897 illegal annexation
resolution of Hawaii by the USA a vote was never ratified by the memebers
of the MFN nations. The vote instigated by the 128 ministers of MFN
nations during 1996 acknowledging and extending MFN status to
the Nation of Hawaii is the proof that Hawaii is still an independent
nation and only a quasi, temporary, state of the USA.
The political views of the Akaka Bill becomes abstract;
On one level you have the Hawaiians like myself who want our stolen lands
back so we are against the Akaka Bill and the independent activists who
want independence from the USA then theres the local democratic
party and OHA who want Hawaiians to have indian tribal status so
they can control the stolen crown/ceded lands, then the rich republican
ha'oles who are against the bill because it will cause a competition
with their investments and profits in the las Vegas and indian
reservation cassinos.
One thing is forsure Hawaii, technicaly, under Hawaiian Kingdom
constitutional law, U.S. constitutional
law and international law is still an independent nation
and is currently a U.S. military weapons depot and an occupied
colony of the USA.
The proof is the fact that the 128 ministers of different foreign
nations with MFN status voted during 1996 to uphold Hawaiis independent
MFN status.
Hawaiians were never allowed to vote for or against the 1897 annexation
resolution so they instigated the KUE petition and obtained
30,000 signatures against the annexation resolution. It was the first
time in history under the U.S. occupation that Hawaiians had a chance
to express themselves as a people. During the 1959 statehood election
Hawaiians were already a minority in their own motherland.
No non-white/ha'ole in their right state of mind would have wanted to be
a part of the USA during 1897. Native Americans, Blacks, Mexicans
and Asians were murdered by racist white christian supremists during
1897 and it was acknowledged by U.S. Constititional law and the
christian church to exterminate
non-white people.
During that time in history Hawaiians had a 100% literacy rate
they could read and write in Hawaiian and English plus they
were part of a highly civilized, aqua-ponic, total independent,
society.
The Akaka Bill will only cause more obsticles for Hawaiians quest
for justice from the USA.
For Hawaiians to be americanized and christianized is no different
than chickens worshipping colonel Sanders and saluting the flag
of KFC.
The world is on the brink of nuclear war and environmental disaster.
Save Hawaii now vote NO for the Akaka Bill!

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) has posted a press release detailing their unanimous decision to support the Akaka bill and its recent changes which were made without input from the Hawaiian community.

Designed to legitimize Hawai`i's illegal overthrow over a century ago, the Akaka bill would create a US controlled "Native Hawaiian governing entity."

OHA trustees seek to be that entity, thus ensuring the continuance of their own paychecks and seats of power as puppets of the fake state of Hawai`i and the US.

The trustees have ignored calls for community hearings on the bill throughout Hawai`i for over a decade.

Many of the majority against the Akaka bill have signed an online petition to express their opposition.

AKAKA BILL WILL DIVIDE HAWAIIANS

Honolulu Star-Advertiser - July 9, 2010

The amendments to the Akaka Bill are ludicrous. Under the amended version, Hawaiians have no control of their national lands or natural resources and they cannot challenge the United States for the illegal overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawai`i during 1893.

Hawaiians had better read the updated version of HR.2314 and object to U.S. Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs making crucial decisions relative to their culture without their consent.

The bill will divide the Hawaiian community even more than it is now. It will make it more difficult to claim the crown lands, konohiki lands and the kuleana lands.

I urge Congress not to pass HR.2314 until a true vote is instigated by the Hawaiian community.

WHAT DOES A FREE HAWAI`I LOOK LIKE ?

Hawai`i nationals want and deserve freedom just as much as US citizens do.

Some say, “the illegal act of war that overthrew your Queen can’t be erased . . . like it or not, you’re all Americans now.”

Yet every day we see people around the world fighting for and winning back their national rights. Their quest like ours is totally legitimate and very real.

Like everyone else Hawai`i nationals want four basic things –

FREEDOM The freedom to decide their own future for themselves. That “freedom” was taken away when the sovereign Nation of Hawai`i was taken over in 1893. It was taken away again by illegal annexation to the United States in 1898. And, it was taken away a third time by the fake statehood vote in 1959.

According to international law, a new vote must to be taken that offers three options – 1) Independence, or 2) Free-Association or 3) Integration (nation within a nation.)

RIGHTS The rights of the independent nation of Hawai`i were never relinquished. The suppression and denial of these rights must cease.

Everyone who descends from citizens of the Hawaiian Kingdom prior to 1893, native Hawaiians and all others, are entitled to these rights.

IDENTITY The political identity of Hawaiians must be acknowledged by the United States. Hawaiians will decide their own future, without interference by the US.

Only those with any measure of indigenous blood may define who is native Hawaiian. A blood quantum imposed by others is an unacceptable means to divide and conquer.

LAND BASE - Hawaiians love their country and lands just as much as US citizens love the US. Hawaiians want all their land back, not just some of it.

AKAKA BILL PUSH IS ON IN US SENATE

A vote in the US Senate on allowing Native Hawaiians to form their own government could come this month following a deal between Hawai`i's Democratic senators and Republican Governor Linda Lingle.

When changes were made, Lingle withdrew her support of the so-called Akaka Bill, named after Senator Daniel Akaka, who introduced the measure.

Senator Daniel Inouye said yesterday that Lingle will support the Native Hawaiian recognition measure after changes are made to the bill clarifying that a Hawaiian government would not have sovereign authority until after negotiations are completed.

"After a thorough review of the State’s most recent proposal, I determined that the changes will not diminish the bill’s intent to establish a federally recognized government-to-government relationship with the United States.

"I believe these changes will help secure additional votes in the Senate to overcome procedural hurdles and receive an up-or-down vote on the bill. We need to act quickly to ensure the bill passes the Senate and is signed into law this year.

"I remain optimistic that the United States will finally extend federal recognition to Native Hawaiians and end over a century of inequality in its treatment of its indigenous peoples," Akaka said.

AKAKA, INOUYE, LINGLE REACH AGREEMENT ON
NATIVE HAWAIIAN GOVERNMENT REORGANIZATION ACT

Honolulu, Hawaii -
Today U.S. Senators Daniel K. Akaka and Daniel K. Inouye announced that
they
have reached an agreement with Governor Linda Lingle that will secure
the
Governor’s full support for the Native Hawaiian Government
Reorganization
Act. Senator Akaka spoke with Attorney General Mark Bennett late Friday

and with the White House this morning before announcing the agreement.

Senators Akaka and
Inouye will offer an amendment that will make changes affecting the
powers and
authorities of the Native Hawaiian governing entity during the period
before
legislation is enacted to implement agreements reached during three
party
negotiations. Although the current bill which passed the U.S. House of
Representatives in February was drafted in consultation with the state
and
included nearly all of its proposed amendments, there were a few
unresolved
issues. The amendment announced today addresses the state’s outstanding

concerns.

“The Hawaii
Congressional Delegation has received and considered many
recommendations for
revising and strengthening the bill since we began this process,” said
Akaka. “After a thorough review of the State’s most recent proposal, I
determined that the changes will not diminish the bill’s intent to
establish a
federally recognized government-to-government relationship with the United
States.
I believe these changes
will
help secure additional votes in the Senate to overcome procedural
hurdles and
receive an up-or-down vote on the bill. We need to act quickly to
ensure
the bill passes the Senate and is signed into law this year. I remain
optimistic that the United States will finally extend federal
recognition to
Native Hawaiians and end over a century of inequality in its treatment
of its
indigenous peoples.”

The amendment will
make changes to Section 9 of the bill. The changes will ensure that
during
the interim period the Native Hawaiian governing entity will be subject
to the
state’s regulatory authority affecting public health and safety, until a

temporary agreement is reached between the entity and state and approved
by the
Secretary of the Interior. It will also make clear that the Native
Hawaiian governing entity’s officers and employees will not be immune
from the
state’s criminal laws.

The text of the amendment is

the House of Representatives in February is available here: LINK

Eia kekaulike me na ho'i'io.

"Ferns were among the early forms of plant life on the earth. They also rank among the most important to the welfare of the human race for, back in the Carboniferous Period, they and their kin became transformed into the coal beds that have been the major source of our fuel and power. Today, when man seems bent on squandering our planet's every resource, I get the warm feeling that I am Nature's ally when I can rescue a few of her remaining ferns to replant in the safety of my sanctuary."

-(Quoted from page 145, 'The Place on Jennings Creek' by L.C. Peltier).

Aloha Kakou.
I ka wa kahio loa, long before the ancestors ever set foot on the Sovereign soil of Hawai'i kena, ferns flourished in abundance on the islands, in fact the oldest fossils Worldwide with fern content or their related allies are some 400 million years old.
Given the prevalence of ferns on the islands it is little wonder the ancestors used them as a source of food and natural medicine and later in traditional Hawaiian culture ferns were used as a wellspring for the making of glue for application in kapa [tapa bark cloth]. The uluhe fern was used as a remedy in tea, as was the fern ally moa for medicinal purposes. At one time at present day St. Andrews Cathedral on Queen Emma Square, at the top of Fort Street on the right there stood a fern house known as Kahaleuluhe which was used by one Ali'i he Mo'i Hawai'i.
Recently a new member here on Maoliworld posted a series of stunning colorful photographs of traditional Hawaiian pageantry i ka moku o Keawe, among them were three photographs of the 'ohia lehua [blossom] symbolizing to the Hawaiian National ho'ohanohano the strength and endurance of this tree.
We are often attracted to the introduced Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia) a native of South Africa or the Heliconia (Heliconiaceae) floral beauties. Yet, strange as it seems the fern by way of opinion represents as a survivor under adversity the spirit of the Hawaiian National. For being in the minority you are in the background yet no floral Hawaiian mosaic can ever be complete without your blending to crown an authentic local tapestry.
Way back in 1858 Abraham Stansfield a fern enthusiast who worked as a general laborer in botany i na mokupuni Beretania wrote: "The bright colors of flowers are admired by the least intellectual but the beauty of form and texture of ferns requires a higher degree of mental perception and a more cultivated intellect for it's proper appreciation. Hence we regard the growing taste for the cultivation of ferns as proof of mental advancement."
At present 74% of native fern species are endemic and 26% of Hawaiian native fern species are indigenous. An aficionado of pteridophytes [ferns] once wrote: "If you wish to know ferns you must follow them." So it is today with hapa-Hawaiians e 'imi i ke ola mawaho, you will never know the kumu unless you listen to the Kupuna.
The laua'e used in hula ceremonies is actually an alien species [physmatosorus grossus]. In the design of "na make ke akua" the overhead ferns depicted represent the greens worn by dancers. As H.R.H. King David Kalakaua said: "Hula is the language of the people and therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people."
Some ferns can thrive in desert like conditions on the islands dependent on their location, but have you noticed the true beauty of the common fern is revealed after a sprinkling shower of light rain or early morning dew? The latticed patterns of the ho'i'io often reveal tiny gentle spiders spinning webs in their fronds, this is nature at its best, the ultimate free show on earth to observe the industriousness of these tiny harmless creatures ke kahi i ke kahi is to understand the mystery of life itself.
Compared to naturally existent island Hawaiian bird varieties, or tree snails, only a few native Hawaiian fern species are believed to be extinct, but 29 species out of some 200 on the islands are either rare or have been categorized as endangered.
As with any botanical plant it pays to have a keen eye while out in the wilds, one endemic species was "discovered" as recently as 1988 yet it grows on the very slopes of Le'ahi in urban Honolulu, its horticultural 'inoa is doryopteris takeuchii.

Ferns are best left untouched and undisturbed in their natural environment for all to enjoy malama ka 'aina, the exception being where "developers" are clearing an area at such times it may be best to gather them up with permission and create a sanctuary in your garden or offer to do it for an elderly neighbor by way of kokua. As Poetess Christina Rosetti wrote:

"Hurt no living thing, Ladybird nor butterfly.
Nor moth on dusty wing. Nor Cricket chirping cheerily.
Nor grasshopper on light of leap. Nor dancing gnat, nor beetle fat.
Nor harmless worms that creep."

A pleasant local website is done by Ahahui.net, You will note the Ahahui newsletter on the right column of their webpage.

The UH Botany faculty have a popular website at:

Over in the U.S. these two American based sites are worthy of attention:

[2]. www.fancyfronds.com (be sure to click on their fern database}.

If you are potentially interested in ferns apart from here on the internet your local library or bookstores such as Borders or Barnes and Noble stock tantalizing bibliophile references for the armchair gardener, second hand bookstores are additional Aladdin's caves worth rummaging through island-wide.
Some gems to particularly look out for include the penultimate guide to local ferns which is of course "Hawaii's ferns and fern allies" [2003] by Daniel Palmer, a former Past President of the Hawaiian Botanical Society. (www.hibotsoc.org/)
"Ferns of Hawaii" [2003] by Kathy Valier is also worth a review by the connoisseur of local ferns.
For general cultural reference gardening "Plants in Hawaiian Culture" [1993] by Beatrice H. Krauss. Or "In gardens of Hawaii" by Marie Neal's contain much traditional folklore and mo'olelo.

Next time you see a fern, nana no a ka la'au ku ho'okahi consider you are looking at what the ancestors once looked at in homage and reverence, their ancestral eyes look back at you the Hawaiian National of 2010 today, if you listen closely you can hear their voices carried softly on the wind "Please protect our sacred beloved 'aina of Hawai'i nei, the land we loved so dearly and have left now lovingly in your care."
-Onipa'a 'oukou.

History that should not—and will not—disappear: July 4, 1894, illegal
overthrow of Hawaii completed

President Cleveland
further concluded that a "substantial wrong has thus been done which a
due regard for our national character as well as the rights of the
injured people requires we should endeavor to repair" and called for the
restoration of the Hawaiian monarchy.

by Larry Geller

On July 4, 1894, the Republic of Hawaii was declared, with Sanford B. Dole as president. The illegal
overthrow of the independent nation of Hawaii was complete.

Yes, although your daily paper may want you to forget this, it is news that
should not be ignored. There’s even a federal law confirming the truth
of the history they refuse to print.

From the Apology Resolution, United States Public Law 103-150:

Whereas, in a message to Congress on December 18, 1893, President Grover
Cleveland reported fully and accurately on the illegal acts of the
conspirators, described such acts as an "act of war, committed with the
participation of a diplomatic representative of the United States and
without authority of Congress", and acknowledged that by such acts the
government of a peaceful and friendly people was overthrown... President
Cleveland further concluded that a "substantial wrong has thus been
done which a due regard for our national character as well as the rights
of the injured people requires we should endeavor to repair" and called
for the restoration of the Hawaiian monarchy.

Whereas, the indigenous Hawaiian people never directly relinquished their claims to
their inherent sovereignty as a people or over their national lands to
the United States, either through their monarchy or through a plebiscite
or referendum.

A treaty of annexation was never passed by Congress, and President Grover Cleveland withdrew the treaty.
Then on this day in history…

On July 4, 1894, the archipelago's new leaders responded to this rebuff by proclaiming a
Republic of Hawaii, with Sanford Dole as president. Under its
constitution, most legislators would be appointed rather than elected,
and only men with savings and property would be eligible for public
office. This all but excluded native Hawaiians from the government of
their land… [From Overthrow, a book by Stephen Kinzer]

What was the motivation? Need you ask? Why is the US in Iraq? From the Washington Post review of Overthrow:

As Stephen Kinzer tells the story in Overthrow, America's century of
regime changing began not in Iraq but Hawaii. Hawaii? Indeed. Kinzer
explains that Hawaii's white haole minority -- in cahoots with the U.S.
Navy, the White House and Washington's local representative -- conspired
to remove Queen Liliuokalani from her throne in 1893 as a step toward
annexing the islands. The haole plantation owners believed that by
removing the queen (who planned to expand the rights of Hawaii's native
majority) and making Hawaii part of the United States, they could get in
on a lucrative but protected mainland sugar market. Ever wonder why
free trade has such a bad name?

The road leading up to the declaration of the Republic of Hawaii was rocky, and can’t be
summed up in a short blog article. Did you know, for example, that a US
Senate investigation revealed that a bribe had been offered to Queen
Liliuokalani to turn against her people and support the Republic? This
snip is from a New York Times article on the Senate investigation, dated
1/29/1894:

Bribe Also, the declaration of the Republic was not a single, static event. There was considerable debate
in Congress on resolutions condemning the overthrown and proposed
annexation. For example, this snip from the 1/25/1894 New York Times
will give you an idea of the complexity that we lose in simplifying
Hawaii’s history:

Debate

Each article is much longer than the snips above. It would be worthwhile to skim the New York
Times for a complete account of the Congressional debate. No doubt this
has already been done. If not, the articles are available on-line for
the harvesting..Catch them before the Times imposes its paywall at the
end of the year.

If you’re not familiar with Hawaiian history, beware of websites that have chosen to re-write it. The true picture of
the overthrow is not pretty, nor can the acts of the US government be
justified or whitewashed. Google cautiously.

Let your children know that there is more to July 4 than barbeques and fireworks. It is a
holiday that tears people apart here in Hawaii. See how you can work
this history into your celebrations and festivities, so that it will
never disappear.

The Secret

For my family and friends who like know:

Despite the dramaz from da drama kings and queens LOL the secret is to overlook the differences and focus on the common ground.

Unite and conquer. There is strength in numbers.

Ironically I serve on several boards and fricken HAOLE people listen to me. Within a matter of two months I ousted a president of a board. In 2 months!

When it comes to some Hawaiians they so pilau they doing it all wrong but good luck.

They like wait another 117 years. Good luck with that! That's why I know that while some people SAY they want Hawaiians to get their nation back they really don't. Instead they want to continue to struggle ANOTHER 117 years. This excludes my cousins like on the Na'ea and Naihe sides who are working COLLABERATIVELY with others and overlook the differences while focusing on the COMMONALITIES.

For others... they only know how to fight. THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO WIN.

That's how I can tell that some people really don't want to win. For those who DO LOL

UNITE AND CONQUER. THAT is the secret.

Meanwhile today is July 4th Independence Day for Americans. Happy independence day!!! Except nowadays we are DEPENDENT and ALL of us are slaves to the banks. Celebrate how you wish LOL

Today is my littlest cousins' birthday. Her name is HOKULANI. From my paternal Maui side. Happy birthday to HOKULANI!
