Aloha Kumu....It's so easy to look at the world and it's people thru our own "pair of glasses", our own experience---in fact maybe it's all we can do, even when we are trying our best to be aware......In that light, I want to say this to you...I know I can't fully understand how it has been for you, to have spent much of your life as a Hawaiian activist, on the front lines. You have seen the worst of the "Western culture" over and over.... in these rapacious developers, these so-called educated professionals, traitor politicians, etc .....You must be always seeing the greedy, the arrogant, the pushy people who seem to be the epitome of all that has been lost and could still be lost, if people like you weren't there to push back.So I understand when even you.... descend into haole bashing a bit,..,,which has happened in a few of our talks. I have wanted to say, at these times, "Surely they can't all be that bad, surely not every "Westerner" is an arrogant, insensitive, desecrating jerk.""Surely there are some "Westerners" who want to be respectful but are ignorant---and don't even realize they are ignorant, which causes a lot of their blunders! In one of our first talks, you said, "In Hawaiian culture, the most important question when you meet someone is, "Where are you from?" which helps to make a connection with a sense of place and maybe mutual relatives. But when a mainland person meets you, they say, "What do you do?" because they want to establish what class you are compared to them, whether you are high class or low-class."I don't agree with that. Sometimes it's true, but not always. In my experience, sometimes local folks have asked me, "Where are you from?" in a quite challenging way. They were expecting, because I choose not to speak pidgin, that I will have to answer, "from the mainland" --- knowing they dislike mainlanders. When I tell them that I've been here since age 4, and I have five generations of family here, (and some brown blood too)---then they grudgingly give me a little respect. And in most every situation where a mainlander has met me for the first time and asked, "What do you do?" it hasn't felt like they were trying to make a class distinction---they were just trying to make conversation--find a mutual connection---to make a connection, period.I may be naive, but I still believe that most people, of whatever race, are basically good at heart, and would definitely offer respect to the people they meet here--- if they knew how. Sometimes it's good to remember that the unethical, warmongering, lethal ways of the government do not always reflect the hearts and minds of the people. This is getting to be a long letter so I'll stop with that. And put the rest of my comments and thoughts in a "Part II" How to educate ignorant people to be respectful of Hawaiian culture ."Thank you for listening Kumu,A hui hou,Michelle

Sovereign Princess

Let's energize what would be a more appropriate title for the new Ka'iulani movie: how about "Sovereign Princess"?I just recently sent this email (below) as a corrective thought to the makers of the film. Together perhaps we can suggest that a different title, such as "Sovereign Princess," would be more appropriate. (Especially since the movie trailer looks like it's going to be another American pop-culture movie along the lines of "The New World", also starring the same leading actress.)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9PGflvRyLkAnyway, you can draft your own email to the makers of the movie and send to these two email addresses, with the subject of the email being: "Sovereign Princess."Roy Tjioe and Ricardo Galindez are the makers of the film:rtjioe@islandfilmgroup.com; rgalindez@islandfilmgroup.comAs far as I can tell, these people have put a lot of time and effort into producing a "dramatic interpretation of important events in Hawai'i's history." It's a movie meant for pop culture consumption, and as such it seems that only this one change will make a big difference in how it's perceived. Thanks for communicating with them if you have feelings about this subject. Below is my draft which I sent to them, feel free to borrow from it if you like.-----------------------------------------------------Aloha Mai Kakou,Thank you for producing and filming what looks to be an interesting movie with incredible talent. I look forward to seeing it soon.Unfortunately, the title you've chosen does almost as much to propitiate common wrongful assumptions about Hawai'i as it does to dispel them.A better title would be "Sovereign Princess." This would be more to the point of the movie. It is not to late to reconsider the movie's title to be more in alignment with the beauty and strength of Princess Ka'iulani's life and struggle to maintain Hawai'i's sovereign independence.Congratulations again on your work, let's make sure together that it sends the right message.

Hawaii A Voice of Sovereignty Continues to Tour Throughout Hawaii with Special Screenings at the ‘Honoka’a People’s Theatre’ on the Big Island Sept 24th and the Waimea Theater on Kauai Sept 25th .FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEA Special Hawaiian Theatre Screening Tour of “Hawaii A Voice For Sovereignty” will be held on the Big Island, Thursday, September 24th at the Honoka’a People’s Theatre at 7:30pm and on Friday, September 25th at the Waimea Theater in Waimea, Kauai at 7:30pm.Native Hawaiians speak of Sustainability and HopeSeptember 23, 2009 - Ah, the postcards, the palm trees and the flower leis. It’s the local music, the Hawaiian luaus, and the smell and taste of Hawaiian food that keeps many coming back for more vacations. Unfortunately, Hawaii’s culture and people are quickly becoming a watered down void of authenticity, silenced by the rules and regulations of greed and commercialization since the U.S takeover in 1893.Catherine Bauknight, celebrated and known international photojournalist, has produced an emotional and educational documentary that delves into what is happening behind the vanishing of Hawaii’ana: the culture, the traditions and sustainability of the islands. In this inspiring and moving film, the Native Hawaiians show first-hand how the people of Hawaii do indeed have a voice; a voice of truth, passion, and a will to continue their fight to connect and live with their culture and their land.Based on facts discussed in the film, native Hawaiians are in an uphill battle that includes the ‘Apology Resolution’, a U.S. Public Law adopted in 1993 in which the U.S Government apologized for the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1893. While looking for an advantage that will allow them to reacquire specific lands once patented to them by Hawaiian royalty, the resolution has served as a major impetus for the Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement that has been the subject of intense historical and contemporary debate.Hawaii A Voice for Sovereignty is a rare and insightful journey into how Hawaiian traditions are imperative to Hawaii’s organic survival and to its history, its people, and their passion to preserve its culture. For information about the film:www.catherinebauknight.comcbauknight@othilamedia.com

'Barbarian Princess' film title raises some hackles in Hawaii

Producers banking that movie's 'ironic' name will appeal to wider audience

By Mary Vorsino
Advertiser Urban Honolulu Writer
Native Hawaiians yesterday expressed anger at the decision to call a soon-to-be-released feature film on Princess Ka'iulani's life "Barbarian Princess," and some went as far as to call the title a publicity stunt and an insult to the young royal's memory.
The producers of the film had scrapped the title in 2008, following outrage from some, but then returned to it. The 130-minute movie will make its world premiere at Hawai'i Theatre on Oct. 16 during the Hawaii International Film Festival. Interest in the film, HIFF officials say, is already high.
"Barbarian Princess," meant to be an ironic title, is what the princess was dubbed by some newspapers during her travels in the 1890s to the Mainland, where she astounded people with her grace, intelligence and beauty. The movie's producers say the title is meant to intrigue audiences, especially those outside of the Islands who wouldn't recognize her name or know her story.
"The ironic reference was done for a specific reason," said Roy Tijoe, a producer for the film and the co-owner of Island Film Group. He said concerns about the title "were coming from people who thought that we were intending a literal reference. Of course, that's not what we're doing."
But yesterday, several Native Hawaiian leaders said the title — ironic or not — is offensive.
"Because it's a painful thing, we don't care for irony," said Jon Osorio, a professor at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Kamakauokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies. "We really feel helpless to deal with producers ... who sensationalize our history in order to get to the wider audience, no matter what their intentions."
Hawai'i entertainer Palani Vaughan, a longtime critic of the project, said that the title of the movie is one of a host of concerns he has with the piece. Vaughan read the script for the film in February, and turned down the part of King Kalakaua. He said the movie distorts history and misses key facts.
"The real damage will be to the millions of viewers worldwide who will walk away (from the movie) with a truly inaccurate portrayal of our history, and that I resent. How do we undo that?" Vaughan said.
'so insulting'
Vicky Holt Takamine, president of the 'Ilio'ulaokalani Coalition, called the film's title an outrage.
"It's just so insulting to her," she said. "I don't know any Hawaiian who would agree to that (title)."
The producers of the film scrapped "Barbarian Princess" last year, in an effort to ease tensions.
Other working titles for the film were "Princess Ka'iulani" and "The Last Princess."
Tijoe said the producers returned to "Barbarian Princess" after long consideration.
"It was a way to bring to the fore what had happened in the past," he said. Tijoe acknowledged that the film title is "provocative," and he also said part of the reason "Barbarian Princess" was picked was because of fears the other working titles wouldn't have a commercial appeal outside of Hawai'i.
"Our intentions are honorable here. Certainly no offense is intended," he said.
Ric Galindez, another producer for the film and also co-owner of Island Film Group, said the film shouldn't be judged by its title.
"We hope that people from Hawai'i will see it and enjoy it," he said, adding that the film is intended "to tell the rest of the world" and "pique people's interest" in the story of Princess Ka'iulani.
Former Hawai'i resident Q'orianka Kilcher was cast as Ka'iulani for the film.
Kilcher portrayed Pocahontas in the 2005 film "The New World."
Princess Ka'iulani, who died at age 23, witnessed the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893.
The movie on her life was shot in part at 'Iolani Palace and cost about $8 million to produce. Shooting wrapped up in 2008, and the producers hope to secure a distribution deal by early next year.
Chuck Boller, executive director of the Hawaii International Film Festival, said he is getting lots of inquiries already from people interested in seeing the biopic. Tickets for the HIFF showing will go on sale Oct. 1 for HIFF members and sponsors, and Oct. 5 for the general public, Boller said.
He said he wouldn't be surprised if the 1,400-seat Hawai'i Theatre is sold out.
"It's been an important film and people really want to see it," Boller said.
The world premiere will coincide with Princess Ka'iulani's birthday.
Boller said he has seen the film and enjoyed it, calling it "realistic" and "accurate."
He added that the title of the movie will make sense to those who see it.

BECAUSE CONSUMER SPENDING IS GOING DOWN. WHEN LOOKING AT THE STOCK PRICE, IT'S THE BEST TIME TO BUY INTO THE MARKET AT THE LOWS IT IS IN. AS LONG AS ASSET LEVEL IS STABLE IT'S A GREAT BUY AS WITH ALL OTHER RETAILERS.SUPPLY AND DEMAND...PART OF WHAT THE STOCK MARKET IS ALL ABOUT. When Haoles like to dictate

First, my (over) use of the term - Haole. Basically for the most part, a Caucasian but also anyone who is non-Oiwi that has a Western concept. So unless you're Asian & is very westernized, I use that term on them too.Anyway, my coworker Gordon whom I've hinted about before. This time I was able to ask him straight out what "Native American" tribe he was, he claimed "Seneca". This is how the conversation went. First of all, Gordon is the typical, egotistical person who LOVES to hear himself talk.Gordon: So, any word on domestic terrorism?me: Huh? Ok, what do you exactly mean by that? You mean Hawaiians doing things physically that could be marked as that?(he kinda takes the subject in a diff. direction)G: You know, but I really love going to Hawaii, and I get along perfectly with Hawaiians!me: (thinking how would he know he was actually speaking to a Kanaka?) I know a lot of outsiders who do, but...G: see, what will happen if Hawaiians...say what, end tourism, then what? How are you guys suppose to get money?Me: (more irritated now) oh well. Who cares really?G: *laughs* They haven't thought that through obviously.me: Oh, they have. But see, that's what I don't understand is how it affects people like you. I mean, what would it matter to you, how are you affected by it?G: oh no, it doesn't affect me at all.me: exactly!G: I just go there & desecrate your beaches & stuff.me: (holding my tongue ready to say a racial comment)G: See, I'm native american.....me: what tribe? That's when he later explained that he was Seneca. In other words, he's a Haole claiming Native American ancestry (he said Native American to me before rather than mention the tribe simply b/c he is NOT a tribe member!) and feels that he can justify why there should be tourism, as if he's saying he can relate.Facts:1) he grew up Haole style, not Seneca2) he just adores everything about Hawaii & esp. the FOOD which he believes he's a connoisseur & feels a connection b/c his Japanese wife's grandma is from Oahu3) typical Haole who believes that only THEY know what's best for us

Fake State

I was back in Hawaii during the month of August for a visit with family and friends. As great as that was, it was truly gratifying to see that the fake "state" of Hawaii didn't put on a big display for the 50th anniversary of "thefthood."It was awfully hard to get back on that plane to come back to Ohio. Thank goodness, I won't be here too much longer.

AKAKA BILL - PONO OR POHO?

Dear Senator Akaka,It saddens me that a kanaka maoli (native Hawaiian) such as yourself would want to perpetuate the United States' belligerent occupation of Hawai`i by introducing legislation such as S. 1011 (Akaka bill.)If you believe this is good for maoli, why is it then that your classmates, Louis Agard (Buzzy) and Kekuni Blaisdell are opposing it? Is it that you believe you are a wiser man then they? I believe you are all wise men, but the difference seems to be that they recognize the truth behind the United States-Hawai`i relationship, a relationship that has brought dispair to maoli for well over a century.Selling our soul to the devils with S. 1011 won't help anything, it'll be another smoldering trident thrust into our backs by the devils.I'm sorry but I must disagree with your statement that S. 1011 benefits everyone in Hawai`i, S. 1011 benefits the American occupation of Hawai`i, and it is clearly racist. It does not benefit from the truth that maoli are NOT native Americans and we will never be native Americans. That is an insult to our maoli ancestors, including yours. Take a look at the sad conditions of the majority of native Americans and ask yourself, is this what I want for my people? I hope your answer is no....I have the greatest hope that S. 1001 dies like all prior attempts to place maoli under the plenary authority of the Interior Department. Dialog needs to be opened between the United States' State Department and all descendants of the Hawaiian Kingdom regardless of race.I urge you to practice pono (integrity) or the high position in the United States government to which you have climbed to will be poho (hollow,) a sad and embarrassing legacy left for your descendants. They'll still be here after you're gone. What should they say when people ask them why you did this to Hawai`i?If S. 1011 is adopted and they remain in Hawai`i they will become outcasts amongst the maoli. Is this the future you want for them?If you really want to help your people 1) drop your efforts to further the United States belligerent occupation of your homeland, and 2) Work towards getting Hawai`i placed back on the United Nations list of nations to be decolonized. The United States lied to the members of the United Nations that Hawai`i became the 50th state. The statehood process was just as illegitimate as the fake annexation of Hawai`i by a majority vote of the US congress. You know and I know that Hawai`i was never lawfully annexed and was never lawfully a state of the United States. Please don't sell Hawai`i's soul to the devils....He Hawai`i Au! REMOVING THE STAR A DEMONSTRATION OF FEELINGS

Maui News - September 14, 2009Looking back to when the illegal provisional government of the United States tried to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the farce that Ko Hawai`i Pae `Aina was part of whatever - I enjoyed advocating for the truth by joining the demonstrations at the airport and the state building. The biggest pleasure I had was seeing the small and watered-down celebrations of those who live the illusion that Ko Hawai`i Pae `Aina is part of America. There were no fireworks, no parades, no waving of banners and flags. Why? Because you cannot celebrate evil. The second thing that I found great pleasure in was when my fellow civilized people cut the 50th star from the American flag and put a match to it. The ultimate demonstration of our true feelings and ku`e .... ...You cannot honor genocide, lies, theft, breaking of treaties and the occupation of a peaceful nation. America is the kid with his hand in the cookie jar and chocolate chips on his lips and still insists that he never ate the cookies. The only ones to back him are the ones that shared in the immoral behavior.America preaches the Ten Commandments and breaks every one. A culture of hypocrisy, not democracy.Gaby GouveiaMakawao
