Sovereign Princess

Let's energize what would be a more appropriate title for the new Ka'iulani movie: how about "Sovereign Princess"?I just recently sent this email (below) as a corrective thought to the makers of the film. Together perhaps we can suggest that a different title, such as "Sovereign Princess," would be more appropriate. (Especially since the movie trailer looks like it's going to be another American pop-culture movie along the lines of "The New World", also starring the same leading actress.)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9PGflvRyLkAnyway, you can draft your own email to the makers of the movie and send to these two email addresses, with the subject of the email being: "Sovereign Princess."Roy Tjioe and Ricardo Galindez are the makers of the film:rtjioe@islandfilmgroup.com; rgalindez@islandfilmgroup.comAs far as I can tell, these people have put a lot of time and effort into producing a "dramatic interpretation of important events in Hawai'i's history." It's a movie meant for pop culture consumption, and as such it seems that only this one change will make a big difference in how it's perceived. Thanks for communicating with them if you have feelings about this subject. Below is my draft which I sent to them, feel free to borrow from it if you like.-----------------------------------------------------Aloha Mai Kakou,Thank you for producing and filming what looks to be an interesting movie with incredible talent. I look forward to seeing it soon.Unfortunately, the title you've chosen does almost as much to propitiate common wrongful assumptions about Hawai'i as it does to dispel them.A better title would be "Sovereign Princess." This would be more to the point of the movie. It is not to late to reconsider the movie's title to be more in alignment with the beauty and strength of Princess Ka'iulani's life and struggle to maintain Hawai'i's sovereign independence.Congratulations again on your work, let's make sure together that it sends the right message.

  • “Remember Pearl Harbor” and "Remember 911" and "Remember the Federal Reserve Board became a money machine for David Rockefeller and his Syndicate. President Obama (Carter) appointed Rockefeller's personal aide, Paul Volcker."

I am so sad that 8 million used to produce this film came from bankers. Kaohi
  • I just received a personal response from Roy Tjioe, he explains his rationale for keeping the current title. Here it is:

Just as “Remember Pearl Harbor” is a way to remind us that the past cannot be allowed to repeat itself, “Barbarian Princess” is intended to make the audience realize that Hawaiians should never be seen that way again."

Hmmm... yet still it doesn't sit well, does it? In considering "Sovereign Princess" as an alternative title (and Mr. Tjioe says he's considered many, many titles), he says that the word "Sovereign" does nothing to connect the audience to Hawai'i... the logic is a bit flawed, I think...
