Ignorance

I came across this article a couple weeks ago:

s-MEXICO-CLIMATE-DISAPPEARING-large"CANCUN, Mexico — Encroaching seas in the far Pacific are raising the salt level in the wells of the Marshall Islands. Waves threaten to cut one sliver of an island in two. 'It's getting worse,' says Kaminaga Kaminaga, the tiny nation's climate change coordinator.

The rising ocean raises questions, too: What happens if the 61,000 Marshallese must abandon their low-lying atolls? Would they still be a nation? With a U.N. seat? With control of their old fisheries and their undersea minerals? Where would they live, and how would they make a living? Who, precisely, would they and their children become?"

Regardless of what one believes is the cause of global warning, the questions raised are serious and need to be addressed. I would like to get into the cultural implications in a future post, but one thing that disturbed me about this article was the comments. Entire groups of indigenous people are being displaced by this and so many people took time out of their day to stop and let the world know just how silly and trivial they think it is. I know most people on comment boards are trolling for attention but I see this kind of thing constantly.

It's not the first or last time I will be disappointed by the level of discourse on public message boards but it reminds me of how important it is for people of Pacific nations to stand together, raise awareness, and lend support to these struggles. Living on the continent, I still meet people who have no idea there is even such a thing as an indigenous Hawaiian people! We got into a discussion with a woman at an event a couple weeks ago about the ignorance of the American people on this subject and her reply was "I know, I totally get it, I am a 6th generation Ohioan." ..... what?

I have so much to learn about my heritage and culture. I think it's important to realize though that we all have a responsibility to pass whatever knowledge we have on to those around us, whether we're on the continent or on the islands. Only that will lead to a more accurate understanding and appreciation of Hawaiian and other Polynesian people and the issues facing us today. Lives, languages, and cultures depend on it.

Please take a second to read the article and lend whatever knowledge you have to the message boards.

AKAKA BILL HEADED NOWHERE?

AKAKA BILL HEADED NOWHERE?

Honolulu Star-Advertiser - December 11, 2010

The embattled Akaka Bill stands little chance of seeing new life this year, despite two endorsements from the Obama administration.

US Attorney General Eric Holder and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar sent a letter Thursday to Senators Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell, endorsing the Akaka Bill....

...Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee Walter Heen said Thursday's endorsements will likely not matter in the long run, with Republicans taking control of the House and increasing their ranks in the Senate.

"Let me put it succinctly - If they can't get 'don't ask, don't tell' through, how much importance are the Republicans going to place on getting our bill through?" Heen said. "I maintain that the (Akaka) bill has been dead for some time now."

Last week, Republican Senators Jon Kyl of Arizona, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and John Cornyn of Texas issued a statement in response to reports that the Akaka Bill might be revived by attaching it to other legislation.

"Legislation as highly complex and divisive as the native Hawaiian bill requires vigorous discussion, debate, and amendments," Kyl said.

"An attempt to include it in unrelated legislation to keep the government operating is a breach of process and is an example of what the American people are tired of — back room deals that are inserted in secret packages written behind closed doors."

HAWAIIANS STRUGGLE TO OVERCOME LONG SAD HISTORY

Honolulu Star-Advertiser - December 8, 2010

...The deterioration of a once-proud and strong race of people began with the arrival of Captain James Cook in 1778 and continues to this day.

With the arrival of James Cook more than 200 years ago, the genocide of a race began. From a population of between 600,000 to 800,000 in 1778, by the 1850s (in less than 75 years), the population of Hawaiians was reduced to approximately 50,000 people. Thus the "put down" of Hawaiians began.

By 1822, in less than 45 years, upon the arrival of the missionaries, the "put down" of our religion, language, culture, system of governance, and land tenure began. And by 1848, in less than 26 years, with the so-called "Great Mahele of 1848," began the alienation of ownership of lands of the kingdom to non-Hawaiians.

Then in 1854, in less than six years, upon the adoption of the "Bayonet Constitution" by the new republic, Hawaiians were effectively denied the vote in this new democracy. Through the subsequent passage of various pieces of legislation by this new democratic government, lands belonging to Hawaiians and their alii were gradually being stripped away.

By 1893, in less than 30 years, the hunger for land and money by the colonists, the Hawaiian kingdom and independent nation of people with treaties with the great countries of the world, including the United States, was overthrown by the new republic and thus accelerated the "put down" of Hawaiians.

The annexation of Hawai`i by the United States in 1898 was the "icing on the cake...."

Aloha kakou Nationals of Ko Hawaii Pae Aina,
This is a message to all who lokahi for truth on December, 06, 2010 on the streets of I'olani Palace and those in spirit with us.I don't have all your contacts, and ;pray those that do will relay my message toyou.
Hana hou, mahalo piha for your commitment in Truth.
As I mentioned in a previous email of my mana'o on the inauguration of the Fake State of Hawaii'sGovernor. This was my first attendance to such a inauguration for in mypast I have only witnessed Mayoral inaugurations at various Counties. Due to,that I was moving about feeding meters than most I was able to view a scenario Ioften don't have. I had that privilege because of your fortitude and commitmentto oni'pa'a. Mahalo nui.
Over the years of my involvement in protesting the fraud in Hawaiian Islands, I have sort of been at a distance or at groundzero that is so involved that I don't notice anything immediatelyabout me and focus on Security elements roaming around me. Yesterday, wasthe first time I noticed eye balls and have come to the conclusion everyone hastwo but not all see. Due to Security control of admission to I'olani Palace viaKing Street gate and our strategic position fronting the gate I was given an"stock herd" auctioneers view of hundreds of faces and thousands ofmaka that were bottle-neck at the King Street gate. Like cattle to theslaughter, they knew it was the end but kept in line just in case there would beanother option.
Most of you have never witnessed a slaughterhouse (rendering) operations. As a kid in the country of Koolaupoko I was much aware.Whether it be hogs, chickens, ducks or cattlethey all have the same eyes of fear knowing death is near. Moreso of cattlefor they have such large eyes that haunt you. I viewed the crowd as that ofa slaughterhouse operations. While livestock have a instinct that death isnear it has no options. Human kind do, yet deny themselves truth. Theyrather remain clothe in lies then stand naked in truth. Most hide under thecategory of " I never know the truth about Hawaii " Fifty years ago, I'd agreethat was probable, but not since the 1970's
I noticed varied species in the "cull line", whites, yellows, blacks, brown, reds and a few pintos. As I gazed upon the slow movingline, I visioned what took place in creating the Republic of Hawaii by ahandful of thieves disguised as a Safety Committee. From my research, only thosewho swore an allegiance to the Provisional Interim Government were allowed tovote in the convention that created the Republic of Hawaii. And that numberrepresented less than 3 % of the Hawaiian Islands population. The kanaka maoliHawaiians were disqualified in their own homeland due to new votingqualifications and of course their reluctance to swear allegiance to this newgovernment. The oriental populations of Chinese and Japanese who were themajority were cast 'heathens' by the white Church, and as such, heathens ofJudeo-Christian doctrine are less than human and have no rights to vote. Sothis majority of Kanaka Maoli Hawaiians and "Orientals" were completelyeliminated in the creation of the Republic of Hawaii.
My revelation further deepened, as I looked upon the "cull field" I saw " federal" native Hawaiians, alias Kanaka MaoliHawaiians, Chinese and Japanese whose ancestors 117 years ago were condemnedless than human by the same system they were patiently standing in line toproudly honor the new "Rendering Master". I said to myself, "how can the socalled intellect of people be so wrong against their own, then I realize thebottom-line of reality is to remove one's identity as a living soul tothat of a commodity of a corporate person of State.
Then, I came back and saw the reality of Hawaiian Nationals standing for truth. We were white, yellows, blacks, browns redsand even pintos. Our eyes had no fear of being culled. We are blessedfor repect and honor of our ancestors and above all have acommon pu'uwai of truth that bonds us as one.. Because of them we have aduty. Because of you, I have maluhia, peace with myself and my ancestors,as do you. Finally, I also realize we were standing outside of I"olaniPalace probably in the same area our ancestors stood to Ku'e ceremony ofthe fraudulent Republic of Hawaii inaugurate Sanford B. Dole as its President onJuly 04, 1894.
Please forward this message to those you have contact with that was present or in spirit with us. E kala mai I did not make a contactlist. Kuulei from Hilo, Ululani o Florida. Mahalo piha.
Get rested, get ready for we have more to do.

Akaka Bill Hidden Deep Inside?

Associated Press - December 9, 2010

In the Senate, Appropriations Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye, D-Hawai`i, backed by Democratic leaders, has fashioned an omnibus spending measure — providing almost $20 billion more than the House bill — that he wants to substitute for the measure being passed across the Capitol.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., opposes Inouye's move, but GOP members of the Appropriations Committee, such as Senators Thad Cochran of Mississippi and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, are open to the idea.

Report of Ku’e Action Protesting Abercrombie’s Inauguration at ‘Iolani Palace

The Ku’e Action was fantastic! At about 9:30AM our gang processed mauka on Mililani Street sounding the pu and flying hae
Hawaii and banners. The procession crossed over King Street and we situated
ourselves right at the main gate of the palace. The small side gate was the only
point of entrance for the guests and public. About six HPD officers who were
standing in the driveway moved aside and eventually disappeared, leaving the
front gate for us to occupy.

Positioning ourselves at the front gatemeant the general public, political cronies, rank and file soldiers of the
Democrat party, and practically every lesser dignitary, had to walk past us.
That included the cabinet members (like Bill Aila), OHA trustees, state
department heads, etc. It also included the media.

Needless to say, without even trying, we got a lot of attention and made a considerable impact
with our striking banners and signs. Everyone at the inauguration had at least
an inkling that Hawaiians were not pleased with the proceedings.

Themedia was very responsive. As spokesperson, I handed out press statements and
gave comments to all four TV news channels, Hawaii Public Radio, KHVH, Civil
Beat, etc. For example, at least half of the story tonight (at the bottom of
each hour) on KHVH about the inauguration, mentions our protest and that
Hawaiians activists consider it a “slap in the face,” especially since Linda
Lingle had her inauguration at the state capitol in 2002.”

Once theceremonies were underway at the coronation stand, the ones with the taller
banners and the flags walked Ewa on King then turned mauka on Richards Street
and walked up and down Richards a few times. This way the entire audience of
about 5,000 had an irresistible and unavoidable view of Hawaii Independence
banners and hae Hawaii moving in the background as Shatz and Abercrombie took
their oaths of office. It was priceless theater!

As the crowd filed outafter the ceremonies, again through the one gate, many of them greeted us with
encouragement. The OHA trustees, however, were apparently not amused and kept
their gaze strictly forward as they walked past us toward their Kapiolani Blvd.
offices. You could feel their utter disdain for us from 20 feet away.

The demonstration was a total success. Even though we lacked numbers, the two dozen who came, the visual aids and the simple honesty of our message
was enough to carry loud and strong. Once again, this rag-tag bunch of activists
managed to majorly co-opt another Fake State event!

Mahalo nui toall!

Join us Monday for Ku’e (Protest) at the Palace

Alarge group of Hawaiians will gather on Monday, December 6 at ‘IolaniPalace to protest the use of the palace grounds as the site for theinauguration of Neal Abercrombie as the next Governor of the State ofHawai’i.

The protesters maintain that having the inauguration onthe grounds of ‘Iolani Palace, the most recognizable and enduringsymbol of the Hawaiian nation, would constitute an act of disrespect anddesecration of this historic and sacred site; an affront to the royalsand subjects whose nation was summarily stolen from them in 1893; and asenseless act of provocation to the Hawaiianpeople of today.

At8:00 AM, Monday morning, Dec. 6 the group will gather and lokahi atKakaako Waterfront Park (for parking purposes, big area, no meters) Fromthere we will run shuttles over to the makai (Queen Streeet) side of Ali'iolani Hale (oppositeside from King Kamehameha Statue). By 9:00 AM we will be in position atmakai corner of King and Richards Street facing the Palace and theCoronation Stand where the inauguration is scheduled to start at 9:30AM.

Inauguration at palace would be bad form

Theplanners for last year's 50th anniversary of statehood deemed it wouldbe insensitive to use Iolani Palace to stage a celebratory event for thejubilee. The concern was it would be offensive to Hawaiians who contendHawaii is still a sovereign nation and Iolani Palace sacred ground.

Sowouldn't using the palace on Monday to inaugurate the next governor ofHawaii be just as insensitive? Why would the state refrain from causingan affront one year, then cause an affront just as egregious the next?

For Neil Abercrombie to start his term with such an insult to the already injured Hawaiian community would be very bad form.

WHAT DOES FREE HAWAI`I MEAN?

Free Hawai`i means returning the Hawaiian Islands back to an independent nation status, as it was before it was illegally overthrown by US marines and rich sugar barons in 1893.

In 1993, President Clinton formally apologized for that act and publicly acknowledged the illegality of the overthrow.

DID YOU KNOW -

98% of all Hawaiians living at the time opposed the illegal overthrow.

Today, less than 20% of all land in Hawai`i is in Hawaiian hands.

Over 60% today is in non-Hawaiian hands!

A few individuals, who are non-Hawaiian, lease an amount of land in Hawai`i that is greater than all land leased to all Native Hawaiians!

Currently, only 72 landowners control 95% of all land in Hawai`i.

Native Hawaiians make up the largest percentage of homeless in Hawai`i today.

Native Hawaiians have the worst social, educational and economic indicators compared to any ethnic group in the US.

Native Hawaiians currently have the worst health profile compared to any ethnic group in the US.

Hawaiian Nationals want their country and land back so they can grow their own foods, become healthy once again, and control their own destiny.

MALAMA HALOA - PROTECTING THE TARO withJerry Konanui on `Olelo tonite

Aloha all,

MALAMA HALOA - PROTECTING THE TARO with Jerry Konanui
will cablecast on O`ahu on the First Friday program tonight at 7 pm,
Oceanic cable channel 53 NATV.

This program features taro grower and Native Hawaiian practitioner Jerry Konanui
as he works to propagate and save from extinction the numerous varieties ofkalo.
Jerry's mission is also to protect kalo from the risks of genetic engineering.

The film is set to the song "Na `Ono o ka `Aina" - The Delectable Taros of the Land,
inspired by Hawaiian cultural educator Edith Kanaka`ole.

Written by Kalani Meinecke and George Kahumoku, Jr. and performed by
Kekuhi Kealiikanakaoleohaililani Kanahele, `ohanaand friends,
the song praises several kalo varieties for their beauty, taste, fragrance and spiritual significance.

In this video survival guide, Jerry Konanui shares a lifetime of knowledge
on identifying kalo varieties, successfully cultivating kalo and preparing poi.

His passion is reflected in the massive turnout of taro growers and eaters
who converge upon the capitol in Honolulu to proclaim their spiritual connection
to this ancestor plant and to oppose any form of genetic modification.

They are joined by Native Americans, including Winona LaDuke,
who face their own battles with the genetic engineering of rice and corn.

The program closes with a scene of the capitol rotunda filled with the sound
of poi pounders as the largest poi-making gathering in history takes place.

This program was made possible with support from Hawai'i People's Fund,
the Hawai'i Community Foundation and Deviants from the Norm.

The film was recently accepted by the 8th Pacific International Documentary Film Festival
to screen in Tahiti in January 2011.

Below is the cablecast schedule for the rest of December.
Will let you know the neighbor island schedules when we get them.

LAMENTING THE AKAKA BILL

Honolulu Star-advertiser - December 2, 2010

With all due respect to U.S. Sen. Dan Akaka, it should be clear to any observer that the Akaka Bill is dead. Unless there is a complete Democratic swing in the next election, the ball game is over and self-governance for native Hawaiians is "dead, dead, dead," as we used to say when I was in the state Legislature.

On Nov. 15, your editorial labeled the current situation as "inexcusable" and seemed to lay much of the blame on our two senators. Actually, the debacle was caused by certain Hawaiian organizations, including the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the White House and Gov. Linda Lingle. The Hawaiian people have suffered since the first Western contact in 1778.

Western diseases, to which Hawaiians had no immunity, decimated their numbers.

At the time of western contact, some 800,000 people inhabited the Hawaiian Islands.

By 1805 that number had been halved.

By 1853 there were only 71,000 Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian people in the islands.

Within 100 years of western contact, the Hawaiian population had been reduced by nearly 90 percent.

According to the 2000 census, the numbers of people who claim some native Hawaiian ancestry have increased to over 400,000.

But only 239,000 live in Hawai`i and they are the poorest, most locked-up population in the state.

Although they only make up about 20 percent of the state's population, in June 2001 they made up 39 percent of the state's prison population, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

And they make up 37 percent of the state's homeless population, according to a 2003 survey.

Independence Is The Only Right To Correct These Wrongs
