AKAKA BILL HEADED NOWHERE?

AKAKA BILL HEADED NOWHERE?

Honolulu Star-Advertiser - December 11, 2010

The embattled Akaka Bill stands little chance of seeing new life this year, despite two endorsements from the Obama administration.

US Attorney General Eric Holder and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar sent a letter Thursday to Senators Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell, endorsing the Akaka Bill....

...Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee Walter Heen said Thursday's endorsements will likely not matter in the long run, with Republicans taking control of the House and increasing their ranks in the Senate.

"Let me put it succinctly - If they can't get 'don't ask, don't tell' through, how much importance are the Republicans going to place on getting our bill through?" Heen said. "I maintain that the (Akaka) bill has been dead for some time now."

Last week, Republican Senators Jon Kyl of Arizona, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and John Cornyn of Texas issued a statement in response to reports that the Akaka Bill might be revived by attaching it to other legislation.

"Legislation as highly complex and divisive as the native Hawaiian bill requires vigorous discussion, debate, and amendments," Kyl said.

"An attempt to include it in unrelated legislation to keep the government operating is a breach of process and is an example of what the American people are tired of — back room deals that are inserted in secret packages written behind closed doors."

  • I one for not to go with a don"t ask or tell method, I think this is not right for People to be married a sgays and lesbeians , I have no disrespect for all of them who are gay, I did write a letter To Gov about situation to having gay marraiges in our islands, and thank god she listened not too or we would of had a more worst flood then what we had so far. As for Akaka bILL  i have no intrest of lobbist and politicians such a s our new govenor who wants to pass akaka bill and such as , the Presisdent of united states who wants to veto the bill, at school i did a report to this about akaka bill and have studied and throughly sudied of the matter to with the cededlands issues , To me it is hurting me that all these years my mom told me not to say anything who i am and then these people go out and sell me out to the state , because they know something i already knew and i have talked to them in washington about it and to akaka , and  it is frustrating enough to see our home lands being brought with a price when it should be used for the families in oahu instead. I thank jesus he heard our prayers to all of the cede lands issues , I pray this time he will make the decisison and it will be a good one . sudden rush ea we need hanakahi in this place.

  • Ehu,

This article is intentionally confusing the public, the players play dirty some intentionally others are just doing their job for the people of America and that includes the Native Americans too.
