Obama's Military SPYING on US PEACE GROUPS

Obama's Military Is Spying on U.S. Peace GroupsBy Amy GoodmanJuly 29, 2009 "Huffington Post" -- Anti-war activists in Olympia, Wash., have exposed U.S. Army spying and infiltration of their groups, as well as intelligence gathering by the U.S. Air Force, the federal Capitol Police and the Coast Guard. The infiltration appears to be in direct violation of the Posse Comitatus Act preventing U.S. military deployment for domestic law enforcement, and may strengthen congressional demands for a full-scale investigation of U.S. intelligence activities, like the Church Committee hearings of the 1970s.Brendan Maslauskas Dunn asked the City of Olympia for documents or e-mails about communications between the Olympia police and the military relating to anarchists, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) or the Industrial Workers of the World (Dunn's union). Dunn received hundreds of documents. One e-mail contained reference to a "John J. Towery II," who activists discovered was the same person as their fellow activist "John Jacob."Dunn told me: "John Jacob was actually a close friend of mine, so this week has been pretty difficult for me. He said he was an anarchist. He was really interested in SDS. He got involved with Port Militarization Resistance (PMR), with Iraq Vets Against the War. He was a kind person. He was a generous person. So it was really just a shock for me.""Jacob" told the activists he was a civilian employed at Fort Lewis Army Base, and would share information about base activities, which could help PMR organize rallies and protests against public ports being used for troop and Stryker military vehicle deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. Since 2006, PMR activists have occasionally engaged in civil disobedience, blocking access to the port.Larry Hildes, an attorney representing Washington activists, says the U.S. attorney prosecuting the cases against them, Brian Kipnis, specifically instructed the Army not to hand over any information about its intelligence-gathering activities, despite a court order to do so.Which is why Dunn's request to Olympia and the documents he obtained are so important. The military is supposed to be barred from deploying on U.S. soil, or from spying on citizens.Christopher Pyle, now a professor of politics at Mount Holyoke College, was a military intelligence officer. He recalled: "In the 1960s, Army intelligence had 1,500 plainclothes agents watching every demonstration of 20 people or more. They had a giant warehouse in Baltimore full of information on the law-abiding activities of American citizens, mainly protest politics."Pyle later investigated the spying for two congressional committees: "As a result of those investigations, the entire U.S. Army Intelligence Command was abolished, and all of its files were burned. Then the Senate Intelligence Committee wrote the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 to stop the warrantless surveillance of electronic communications."Reps. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., Rush Holt, D-N.J., and others are pushing for a new, comprehensive investigation of all U.S. intelligence activities, of the scale of the Church Committee hearings, which exposed widespread spying on and disruption of legal domestic groups, attempts at assassination of foreign heads of state, and more.Demands mount for information and accountability for Vice President Dick Cheney's alleged secret assassination squad, President George W. Bush's warrantless wiretapping program, and the CIA's alleged misleading of Congress. But the spying in Olympia occurred well into the Obama administration (and may continue today). President Barack Obama supports retroactive immunity for telecom companies involved in the wiretapping, and has maintained Bush-era reliance on the state secrets privilege. Lee and Holt should take the information uncovered by Brendan Dunn and the Olympia activists and get the investigations started now.See/hear/read the full exclusive hour broadcast exposé on Democracy Now!:Declassified Docs Reveal Military Operative Spied on WA Peace Groups, Activist Friends StunnedDenis Moynihan contributed research to this column

Mahalo to the Episcopal Church...for taking the lead.-------------------------Urges US adoption of UN DeclarationBy Gale Courey ToensingStory Published: Jul 27, 2009Story Updated: Jul 27, 2009ANAHEIM, Calif. – In a first-of-its- kind action in the Christian world, the national Episcopal Church has passed a landmark resolution repudiating the Doctrine of Discovery and urging the U.S. government to endorse the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.Organizers of the bill hope it will lead to the overturning of a 19th century U.S. Supreme Court ruling and Congress’ assumption of plenary power over Indian nations they say are illegitimate and immoral, and continue to strip American Indian nations of their inherent sovereignty. The resolution, called “Repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery,” was passed unanimously by the Episcopal House of Bishops and by an overwhelming majority of the House of Delegates during the church’s 76th General Convention July 8 – 17 in Anaheim.“It’s a historic event,” said Steven Newcomb, Shawnee/Lenape. Newcomb is the indigenous law research coordinator for the Sycuan Education Department, co-founder and co-director of the Indigenous Law Institute, and a columnist for Indian Country Today.Newcomb’s work on the Doctrine of Discovery in his many essays and his 2008 book “Pagans in the Promise Land” is the spark that ignited individuals in the Episcopal Church to pursue the resolution.Newcomb expressed his “deep appreciation” for John Dieffenbacher- Krall, Brenda Hamilton, and John Chaffee “who powerfully advocated for passage of the adopted resolution.“Through the official action of an important religious institution in the United States, the document raises the visibility of the Doctrine of Christian Discovery, while providing a means of educating people about that doctrine and its continuing effects on indigenous nations and peoples. The resolution is also important because of its focus on and endorsement of the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.”The resolution is also timely: The U.N. Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues has called for a study of the Doctrine of Discovery and its historic and continuing effects on indigenous people to be completed by the forum’s convening in 2010.“The Episcopalian Church’s resolution will no doubt factor into that study,” Newcomb said. The Doctrine of Discovery was a principle of international law developed in a series of 15th century papal bulls and 16th century charters by European monarchs. It was essentially a racist philosophy that gave white Christian Europeans the green light to go forth and claim the lands and resources of non-Christian peoples and kill or enslave them – if other Christian Europeans had not already done so.The doctrine institutionalized the competition between European countries in their ever-expanding quest for colonies, resources and markets, and sanctioned the genocide of indigenous people in the “New World.”The resolution renounces the doctrine “as fundamentally opposed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and our understanding of the inherent rights that individuals and peoples have received from God,” and promises to share the document with its churches, governments within its boundaries, and the U.N.It resolves to eliminate the doctrine within the church’s contemporary politics, programs and structures, and urges the U.S. government to do the same. It asks Queen Elizabeth to publicly repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery, and encourages all Episcopal churches to support indigenous peoples in their ongoing efforts for their inherent sovereignty and fundamental human rights as peoples to be respected.Johnson v. M’Intosh, an 1823 U.S. Supreme Court case, held that because of the Doctrine of Discovery American Indians have a mere right of occupancy to their lands. The ruling is foundational to federal Indian law.Dieffenbacher- Krall, the executive director of the Maine Indian Tribal State Commission and originator of the resolution movement, said the ultimate goal is to overturn Johnson v. M’Intosh, and dismantle Congress’ claim to plenary power over Indian nations.“This is illegitimate, this is immoral, this is evil. U.S. law shouldn’t be based on this. I want to see an all out effort to overturn Johnson v. M’Intosh just as the NAACP legal defense fund and many civil rights activists worked strategically to overturn Plessy v. Ferguson,” he said, referring to the 1896 Supreme Court ruling that upheld a “separate but equal” decision by a lower court that allowed Louisiana to operate separate railroad cars for African-Americans. The high court decision provided cover for southern states to impose racist Jim Crow laws for more than five decades until segregation was tossed out in 1954 in Brown v. Board of Education.A longtime social justice activist, Dieffenbacher- Krall said his growing awareness and understanding of the doctrine’s history made action irresistible.“It’s not like I had a St. Paul on the road to Damascus moment, but sometime in the winter, spring or summer of 2006, I really became aware of the Doctrine of Discovery in connection to Congress’ claim of plenary power over American Indian nations.“So where’s the social justice behind Congress saying, ‘We’ll just do whatever we want with the Maliseets or Navajo or Hopi because we’re the U.S. and you’re not?’ I felt that because I have an uncommon knowledge for a white person about some of this stuff that I might have a role to play working in my church to make people aware of this.”Working with the Wabanaki tribes in Maine, reading Newcomb’s articles and later contacting him helped strengthen Dieffenbacher- Krall’s determination to act, and in October 2007, Maine’s Episcopal Church responded by passing a resolution calling on Queen Elizabeth and the Archbishop of Canterbury to rescind the 1496 charter given to John Cabot and his sons to go forth and claim possession of all the lands in the “New World” that weren’t already claimed by Spain and Portugal.Dieffenbacher- Krall also worked with Chaffee, a professor of Chinese history at Binghamton University and member of the Episcopalian diocese in Central New York, to pass its own similar resolution in November 2008, and with Hamilton, a Maine social worker, who worked with Chaffee to shepherd the national church’s resolution through the process in Anaheim.Chaffee crafted the resolution that was adopted at the general convention. The resolution has “a substantial practical value,” Chaffee said, because it could potentially “provide important legal ammunition in terms of pending and future legal cases that might be brought by Native Americans. I’m very happy to be just a small part of that whole process.”Hamilton was honored to be able to participate. In an e-mail update to her colleagues during the convention, she wrote, “My testimony rebutted the comment I have often heard about this issue, ‘What, are we trying to rewrite history?’ I said that to stand in any of the colonial churches of New England was a reminder that those churches stood on a history of the Doctrine of Discovery and genocide, thus there needed to be recognition of that both by the Episcopal Church and its colonial forbears in the Church of England.”

SEND A LETTER TO PROTEST AHI CAGES!

This came from FoodAndWater Watch...a great organization that keeps track of what people are trying to do to...well...food and water. I was once on an atoll called Rangiroa, with my best friend from high school and her boyfriend who was asked to help them find a solution to a fish disease that was affecting their fish. That was the first time I saw a different form of fish ponds. They made these eleborate bamboopathways...where fish would enter...and couldn't get out. There were tons of fish in there...but they all swam freely...and since the water was shallow for quite a ways...you could just bend over and pluck one from the sea. My friend told the tahitians that it was more than likely a fallout due to the French nuclear testing of another atoll in the South Pacific. They had built these extensive fish traps for hundreds of years....and then...all of a sudden...they had diseases. Polynesians knew how to keep this balance. I doubt Hawaii Oceanic Technology, Inc. will do the same. We..the people...will pay the price for their profits.Donna------------------------Aloha kakou,Hawaii Oceanic Technology, Inc. recently published its final Environmental Impact Statement, which the Department of Land and Natural Resources plans to approve, despite the fact that the Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands, part of the DLNR, found major problems with it, including: lack of shark, marine mammal and endangered species plans; inadequate project disclosure and engineering analysis; and environmental concerns. The Honolulu Advertiser ran an article on the front page today about the HOTI project. Now is our chance to respond and raise this issue in the public consciousness. It is our kuleana to protect our precious natural resources for future generations and to carefully consider the impacts before leasing our waters out to a company, which may bring short-term monetary gain to Hawaii but may very well also have an irreparable impact on our oceans that no amount of money will be able to fix.We may not have the money that the industry has, but we do have our voices. Send in a letter to the editor in response to the article on Hawaii Oceanic Technology, Inc. Below are some talking points that you may find helpful. Send your letter to: letters@honoluluadvertiser.comPlease bcc me at clizzi@fwwatch.org so that I can keep track of how many letters are sent in.Hawaii Oceanic Technology, Inc. has held a bare minimum of public meetings to discuss their enormous project proposal, to raise from 6-12,000 tons of ahi yearly in 12 submerged cages within a 247-acre ocean lease. All of the 12-24,000 tons of fish feed would be imported, containing bait fish (further depleting wild stocks), land-based proteins (e.g. GMO soybeans), and possibly antibiotics, preservatives, growth hormones, and other chemicals.Ninety percent of the ahi produced would be airflown to export markets (primarily Japan), making the venture wholly unsustainable.Ocean fish farms are analagous to concentrated animal feeding operation on land - which have been detrimental both to consumer health and the environment.DLNR approved the EIS despite their own Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands noting unresolved issues: lack of shark, marine mammal and endangered species plans; inadequate project disclosure and engineering analysis; and environmental concerns. The DLNR, the state agency entrusted with preserving our natural resources, seems to be in a rush to approve this giveaway of public waters for private profit. Why?The Board of Land and Natural Resources will conduct a hearing on the Conservation District Use Permit, and let's hope it is well publicized, unlike previous meetings, and held in West Hawaii. We should proceed with great caution until the aquaculture industry can adequately address cultural and environmental concerns, sustainability, and profitability.Hawaii Oceanic Technology plans on using untested technologies. Hawaii is a testing ground for a new industry.More information is available at http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/hawaiiSend your letter to letters@honoluluadvertiser.com and again, please bcc me at clizzi@fwwatch.org so I can keep track of how many letters have been sent in and where we need to expand our outreach.Mahalo nui loa,Christina LizziOrganizer, Fish Program, Food & Water Watch

La Ho'i Ho'i Ea at Thomas Square

I must admit it was a pleasure attending this event. It was about the po'e coming together wearing different hats and colorful clothing. It was the mana'o that was shared by Kaeo and other poe who voiced their mana'o who challenged old ways of thinking and critically analyzing new ones. Skippy gave new meaning to sharing the aloha spirit through his songs, yet it brought back memories about my mother Joyce Kainoa and the PKO. Wow that was memories of the past to cheerish for whom they are the kanaka, our hero's for standing up for political and social injustices toward Kanaka Maoli. It was about Mana and his band who opened the event of musical metaphors that reminded us about our past that Bradah Iz consistently iterated in his songs of ku'e. It was about Bradah Cruz who sang his melodic songs of today and yesterday bringing out truth in untouched territories. It was about Henry Noa standing up for political justice and laying his foundation to encourage the po'e to take back our kingdom. It was about bradah Andre and Hu'i Pu voicing their concerns yet being pa'a about the historical injustices that nearly decimated our culture. It was about Ikaika Hussey and his band that made HULI a sharper vision to penetrate the unknown! It was the Hawaiian Civic who shared their mana'o. It was about cousin Bobby who gave me poi made by the family poi pounder passed from one generation to another (it is very heavy) used by Daniel yesterday and so forth. It was about Manu sharing the blessings of awa root and the the play at night with sista Leinani and the gang! That was awesome hearing and seeing history in the making of how the Ku'e Petition set the footworks for collecting the signatures from our kupuna. It was about how Lynette Cruz and her hoaloha put together part of history that not only inspired but should be shared on all islands! It is about our po'e recognizing all that is HEWA! Mahaol to cousin Kamelamela and her family for inspiring all that the Hawaiian culture represents. To those who donated and contributed and made this event a spectacular event, MAHALO KE AKUA. To all others who sang and shared their mo'olelo for po'e I do not know, mahalo. I leave you wiith this thought of wisdom...Regardless of which tent you were under yesterday, WE ALL CAN AGREE FOR TOTAL INDEPENDENCE!UNITED WE STAND!There are many ways to film this event and stories to share, your maka, the "camera" is where the focus begins as we all expand by understanding our own history as we take the foot steps ahead to for a stronger and brighter future for our kamali'i!It's not about who did it first, it's about being the winner at the end... That is the po'e and the Kingdom of Hawaii.aloha no...namaka'eha

Very amusing

For my family and friends... so that they can laugh LOLI like to make people laugh. This time it was someone trying to imply that Hawaiians are unreasonable and in the process I made myself laugh LOLMy written words:
That would be true IF Hawaiians were unreasonable. However Hawaiians are some of THE most reasonable people ever.
