On January 17, 1993 after reading Public Law 103-150 I renounced my citizenship to the United States. I come here today as a Hawaiian Nationalist of the Hawaiian Kingdom. I strongly support the restoration of the Hawaiian Kingdom government that was invaded and occupied thru an Act of War onJanuary 16, 1893 with the involvement of the diplomatic and military forces of the United States. As Sovereign of the Hawaiian Political Action Council of Hawaii, I strongly SUPPORT the passage of HCR 213 and HR 183.Public Law 103-150 is more then just a symbolic apology, it is an admission of guilt. Admission that a great wrong has been done to the Native Hawaiian people. That Great Wrong continues till this day as I give my testimony to this committee.Since the passage of Public Law 103-150 many Native Hawaiians like myself have begun to learn the truth of the history of Hawaii. The history of an Indigenous people going from living in Grass Huts to a Constitutional Monarchy. The Hawaii Capitol National Heritage Area plan is HEWA. HEWA in that it continues the wrongs against the Hawaiian Kingdom and those like myself who are declared nationals of the Kingdom. After the passage and signing of the Apology Resolution into law by President Clinton, United States should pull down their flag. Withdraw itsPage 2April 1, 2009HCR 213Military forces to the military bases in Hawaii. Allowing the Native Hawaiian people time to gather and decide their future based on the findings in the Apology Resolution. The Congress of the United States should honor its own laws. The Congress of the United States should not be involved in the “Self-Determination” process of Native Hawaiians based on the findings in the Apology Resolution. The introduction of the Hawaii Capitol National Heritage Area Billinto Congress by Senator Inouye without any public hearings in Hawaii is HEWA.Mahalo Nui Loa to Reprensentative Sylvia Luke for her introductions of these very important resolutions. Komo na kahuna i ka hana komo ʻapana. The priests enter to perform their appointed rounds.E heluhelu i keia atikala ma lalo. Read this article below. We are the folks with the prayer duty for the kanaka who do the stonework, with prayers to akua, to aumakua, prayer of warding danger, prayers of strength, prayers of protection, non-stop, from the start of stonework to pau hana, every day of the rock work on the heiau.MONUMENTAL TASKVolunteers, park rebuilding rich history stone by stoneby Carolyn LucasFriday, March 27, 2009 9:45 AM HSTPuukohola and Mailekini Heiau may be in ruins, but the spirit to rebuild is thriving.Amid the hundreds of stones that lay on the ground, some 30 volunteers, led by the National Park Service and its partner group, Na Papa Kanaka o Puukohola, are turning disaster into an opportunity.Hawaiian men are learning traditional dry-stack masonry, perpetuating their culture as they restore its history. They participated in the third of six restoration workshops offered this year at Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site."This is more than a job. With each action, they are putting their mana (divine power) into rebuilding the heiau and honoring the handiwork of their ancestors," said Daniel Kawaiaea Jr., Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site superintendent. "Besides the hard work, sweat and tears, they feel ownership of this site. There's also a willingness to learn how these heiau are built, so they can pass this valuable knowledge to their children and grandchildren, as well as be prepared for when the next earthquake strikes."A magnitude 6.7 earthquake on Oct. 15, 2006, severely damaged the heiau, which sits on a hill overlooking Kawaihae Harbor, Maui and the Kohala Coast, as well as nearby Mailekini Heiau. Puukohola Heiau's northern and eastern walls had extensive damage -- bulges, settling, slides, indentations, cracks and overturned rocks. Mailekini Heiau lost walls on the north, east and center.Puukohola Heiau was built in 1790 and 1791 by Kamehameha I, then a regional ruler struggling for control of the Big Island. Kamehameha sought the advice of a powerful prophet, who proclaimed Kamehameha would conquer all the islands if he built a large heiau and dedicated it to his family war god, Kukailimoku, atop the whale-shaped hill at Kawaihae. The 224-foot-by-100-foot heiau with 16- to 20-foot-high walls was constructed with rounded, water-worn lava rocks, some weighing more than 100 pounds. It is believed the stones came from Pololu Valley, and that thousands of men formed a human chain at least 20 miles long, passing the stones by hand to the hill to be stacked.Mailekini Heiau, built by one of the district's ruling chiefs, was possibly used as a war or agricultural temple by the ancestors of Kamehameha I. It was believed that the heiau was converted into a fort with cannons. The National Park Service received about $6 million to repair these heiau, as well as the home site of John Young, Kamehameha's British adviser, along with a farm enclosure near Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site headquarters, a maintenance building and the visitor center, which also had damage. In 2007, park service crews began repairs and were later assisted by volunteers participating in workshops. The monumental task should be finished by August 2010. After this weekend, it will be about a third done, Kawaiaea Jr. said.Master builder and consultant Francis Sinenci has also worked on the restoration and preservation of Piilanihale Heiau on Maui. Said to be the largest temple in Hawaii, it covers more area than a football field and stands about 40 feet high.Sinenci has more than 15 years of experience. Still, putting sites like Puukohola and Mailekini Heiau back together without the use of mortar is no small feat. Every rock must interlock with the stones around it. No rock is left behind.Maui residents Moke Lono and Jonah Kapu volunteered because of their roots connecting them to the Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site. Both feel a responsibility to restore these sacred places. They call the experience a rush and honor, one in which they felt the presence of their ancestors.L to R: Kuʻuhoamele, ʻOhukaniʻōhiʻa, me Kaponoʻai preside over pule duty at a previous repair session on neighboring Puʻu Koholā heiau. -During Thursday's work of Mailekini Heiau, kahuna, or spiritual advisers, said prayers and chants, intended to protect the men as they diligently worked, as well as honor the intertwining spirit and power at the site. Standing in the heiau and witnessing the rebuilding was incredibly moving for Aʻiaʻi Bello of Nā Waʻa Lālani Kāhuna o Puʻu Koholā."We're reawakening inside and becoming whole again," she said. "This is reminding us who we are."For more information or to get involved, call 882-7218 or visit http://www.nps.gov/puhe.Read the full article hereRead more…

March 24, 2009In the latest turn of events in Hawai`i's impressive grassroots uprising against a huge corporate-military boondoggle, the state's Supreme Court has ruled unanimously (5-0) that the Hawai`i Superferry has no legal authority to continue its operations in the state, at least for the time being....And yet, after last week's court ruling, the Superferry company showed surprisingly little desire to fight, quickly announced it would suspend all Hawai`i service within three days and did. This struck some observers as out of character for such an aggressive, self-important outfit, and raised new questions about the company's and Lehman's intentions: What's up now? Could it be the company actually wanted to get out?Does this confirm that the Hawai`i adventure was really only a demo for bigger military options, as many suggest?...Read The Full Story HereRead more…

I can honestly say I was disappointed and even upset that the Statehood Bill was passed.I knew my country existed and I was a Hawai`i national. The smug US Americans celebrated in triumph and were callous of the rights of the Hawai`i nationals. There were no choices of independence or commonwealth but to remain a territory or become a state. Many Hawaiians didn't vote or were barred from voting. Only US Americans could vote; including the military and their families that qualified their residency within our Kingdom.Today we find that there was no treaty of annexation and the the statehood voting processes were unlawful. I look forward to the day the US de-occupies our nation-state of Hawai`i.Our citizens spoke through the Ku`e Petitions against annexation as the Turpie Resolution indicated that we had a right to do.The fake annexation and fake Statehood speaks for itself. Conditions haven't improved for us since the US invasion and its belligerent occupation.God Bless the Kingdom of Hawai`i forever and down with the US.David M. K. I received this and decided to share it with you.Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2008 10:43:13 PMSubject: Ho'ohemo InoaAloha aina, attached is a PDF of the official Hawaii Maoli form to remove your name from Kau Inoa.. I think now, if you call Hawaii Maoli, they are reluctant to give it to you.. Either way, you can always remove your name by sending them a letter requesting removal.. The form though, makes it a little more convenient. To me, one of the things that clearly stands out about Kau Inoa is that for a long time OHA always said that Kau Inoa has nothing to do them, that it was a separate thing, they did not have access to the data base and yada yada yada..Then suddenly in July of 2006 (I remember clearly it was the weekend of the 'Aha Kane-men's conference), OHA is on the front page announcing their Ho'ohuli Lahui Aloha Nation plan and saying something to the effect that the voters or citizen base will come from the Kau Inoa data base, So now its the opposite, OHA is clearly tied to the data base and is going to use it for "their" Nation building plan.My question is that since no one who signed up with Kau Inoa prior to this nation building announcement had any clear knowledge that OHA would use their name specifically for their own agenda, were they mislead or even deceived? The Kau Inoa enrollment form does have a box you can check that says:I HEREBY DECLARE MY INTENT TO PARTICIPATE IN A PROCESS TO CREATE A NATIVE HAWAIIAN GOVERNING ENTITY AND TO BE INCLUDED ON AN OFFICIAL PUBLIC LIST. (*I wonder how many of them are checked)But contrast this with (from the Hawaii Maoli website):What is OHA's role? The Office of Hawaiian Affairs’ role in this process is as a facilitator only, providing funding and logistical help. OHA’s leadership intends to support, not direct, this community-driven effort. It doesn't say, "I authorize OHA to use my name specifically for THEIR nation building plan."Also, don't forget, Bumpy shared some language from the OHA/Hawaii Maoli contract that clearly states that OHA has full and complete access to the database:Who owns the Kau Inoa database? Does OHA have access to the database?According to the grant contract 1867 between the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Hawaii Maoli, thegrant states:“OHA desires full and complete electronic access to all such data Grantee (Hawaii Maoli) hasdiligently collected, compiled, and maintained to date as well as to all future data Grantee shall collect, compile and maintain.”I believe that there's other language that says that OHA actually owns the Data base. And of course the whole thing just reeks of western politics and propaganda, selling out, buying out, enticing, targeting, freebies, quick processing etc..If you gotta do that to build your nation, something is wrong. Our people need information and education, not free T-shirts.Anyway, IF, I had signed up for Kau Inoa, this would be enough reason for me to Ho'ohemo Inoa - take my name off!Or as the now popular T-shirt says, "Unkau I Noa.." Feel free to share the attached form.aloha aina oiaio,(I have kept this name anonymous since I didn't get permission to send it out with the person's name) I feel the info is worth knowing about.***Other Kaui Inoa info:The Hawaiian Governance Small Grants Program was developed to support the Kau Inoaregistration process. The Hawaiian Governance Small Grants Program (HGSGP) awards:• 1/2 day rate of $150• Full day rate of $300• Hourly rate of $40 Or• Special Event 1/2 day rate $25• Special Event full-day rate $500 Or• $1.00 per completed registration formOn the U.S. Continent the Pay Scale for Mainland Hawaiian Civic Clubs is below. Why is thecompensation for the Hawaiian Governance Small Grants Program (Kau Inoa) grants programdifferent depending on residency.• $3.00 per Kau Inoa registration up to 999• $5.00 per Kau Inoa registration from 1,000 to 1,500• $10.00 per Kau Inoa registration beginning with $1,501• Up to $80,000 per year . Although the above pertains to the HGSGP awards to support the Kau Inoaregistration process, the example grants below are issued by the Administrator under the façade ofHGSGP. These HGSGP awards were unreported and in addition to the Administrative Grants awardedthrough GSPD funds located in the Department previously known as Planning, Research, Evaluations, and Grants. Within OHA, these funds are referred to as the Administrator’s reserved or slushfunds, which are estimated to exceed $400,000.• AOHCC (O‘ahu Council) - $5,000 (05/25/04)• JACL - $10,000 (06/02/04)• CNHA - $20,000 (06/02/04)• SCHAA - $15,000 (06/03/04)• AOHCC - $23,000 (06/12/04)• Mainland Council of AOHCC - $7,764.82 (06/13/04)• CNHA - $4,750 (08/18/04)• AOHCC - $8,210 (091604)• AOHCC (O‘ahu Council) - $24,500 (01/20/05)• KS - $11,125 (0204/05)• Moku O Kaleponi, Inc. - $25,000 (04/05/05)• Hawai‘i Maoli - $24,072 (06/15/05)• AOHCC (O‘ahu Council) - $22,200 (06/15/05)• Moku O Kaleponi, Inc. - $25,000 (12/12/05)• AOHCC (O‘ahu Council) - $10,000 (02/14/06)• Hawai‘i Book & Music Festival - $5,000 (06/27/06)• AOHCC (Mainland Council) - $3,500 (01/31/07)• AOHCC - $20,000 (2007)• AOHCC - $2,000 (2007)• Hawai‘i Book & Music Festival - $18,000 (04/30/07)OHA’s questionable relationship with Hawai‘i Maoli.Hawai‘i Maoli applied for two grants through GSPD. The grants were removed from the GSPD process(personally selected by Administration) and funded through Hawaiian Governance Small GrantsProgram:• $9,440 on 06/08/07 (Kamehameha Statue Lei Draping Ceremony)• $9,100 on 06/08/07 (Annual Lei Draping Ceremony - King Kamehameha Statue in Washington DC)Hawai‘i Maoli received a $25,000 grant from OHA’s Economic Development Department to sponsorOHA’s Economic Conference. Hawai‘i Maoli accepted the $25,000 knowing that they would retain$5,000 and return $20,000 to OHA. By doing so (filtering the monies), OHA named Hawai‘i Maoli as asponsor of their Economic Conference. Hawai‘i Maoli received two grants from the EducationDepartment cost center, after $650,000 was moved from “Services on a Fee Basis” to “Grants in Aid.”“Service on a Fee Basis” funds were approved by the Board of Trustee for specific purposes, not“Grants in Aid.”The grants are:• Ku‘u Kilohana Aloha in the amount of $20,000• Manaleo in the amount of $70,000 Grants were not subject to the GSPD process. These grants wereallegedly written (Keith Kalani Akana) and approved by Education Department staff.1) Please describe the compensation associated with the Kau Inoa small grants program.Option One: OHA to pay approved costs directlyOption Two: Grantee to pay approved costs and seek reimbursement from OHAOption Pay Scales:½ day rate of $150Full-day rate of $300Hourly rate of $40 for (date and time)Special Event ½ day rate $250Special Event Full-day rate $5002) Can you please give examples of past activities associated with each pay scale?3) Does the compensation for the Kau Inoa small grants program vary depending on residency?• On the U.S. Continent the following is the Pay Scale:• Currently, Mainland Hawaiian Civic Club(s) receive:• $3.00 per Kau Inoa registration up to 999• $5.00 per Kau Inoa registration from 1,000 to 1,500• $10.00 per Kau Inoa registration, beginning with 1,501• Up to $80,000 per year4) Why is there a difference in Pay Scales, between Hawaii and the U.S. Continent? Where is theparody, understanding that the majority of Native Hawaiians reside in Hawaii?5) Who owns the Kau Inoa database? Does OHA have access to the database?According to the grant contract 1867 between the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Hawaii Maoli, thegrant states:“OHA desires full and complete electronic access to all such data Grantee (Hawaii Maoli) hasdiligently collected, compiled, and maintained to date as well as to all future data Grantee shall collect, compile and maintain.”6) If an individual registers for Kau Inoa will their contact information be used to disseminateinformation on the Akaka Bill?According to the June 12th (2007), Hawaiian Recognition: Live Call-in TV Show hosted by BrickwoodGaluteria, Aulani Apoliona (Haunani Apoliona’s younger sister who is a Lead Advocate in the HawaiianGovernance Department at OHA), during the closing remarks held up a Kau Inoa bumper sticker andencouraged all Native Hawaiians to register for Kau Inoa – so they (those who registered for Kau Inoa)may be contacted. – It appears that registering for Kau Inoa means that you support the Akaka Bill, according to Haunani Apoliona. – As she did associate Kau Inoa and the Akaka Bill through her actions.7) What is the cost associated with the Kau Inoa merchandise?Office of Hawaiian Affairs most recently expended:• an estimated $105,000 to $110,000 on a 10 month supply of Kau Inoa t-shirts• an estimated $20,000 to $25,000 on Kau Inoa bumper stickers, pens, luggage tags, banners, mail, stickers, baseball caps, and wristbands• an estimated $170,000 to $175,000 on Kau Inoa registration packets (forms, letterheards, brochures, envelopes), which includes the Hooulu Lahui Aloha newsletter and Kau Inoa (event)postcards.8) How much has Hawaii Maoli been paid to maintain the Kau Inoa repository?According to Contract 1867 between the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Hawaii Maoli, compensationis estimated at $611,028 from October 6, 2005 to present – 2 years and 2 months. Furthermore, according to contract 1867: “continually provide OHA full and complete electronic access to any andall data compiled, collected and maintained”9) Unpublished Kau Inoa Grants (see attached).Theses funds are:• Designated as discretionary funds for the Administrator (the Administrator’s slush funds);• Beyond funds designated under the OHA Community Grants Programs (Board of TrusteeInitiatives and Administrative Grants);• Not reported to the Trustees;• Not reported in OHA’s Grants Annual Reports;• Allows Administrator to make multiple awards to specific agencies and organizations that havealready received funds through OHA’s Community Grants Program. Find out how they plan to use it before giving them exclusive access to part of this important public resource!March 25, 2009Dear Tricia,Learn more about the Ahi Aquaculture project on the Kohala Coast and take action now.Photo of inside of ocean fish farm courtesy of NOAA.govHuge, un-tethered, self-powered, underwater spheres crammed with thousands of fish floating off Hawaii's coast sound more like science fiction than reality, but this is exactly what is being proposed off the Kohala coast.A company called Hawaiian Oceanic Technology, Inc. is applying for a permit to create a new massive tuna ocean fish farm. They want to use 247 acres of our seas to hold 12 orb-like cages for growing tuna to export. In February, their draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) - accepted in January - was published. It doesn't adequately cover a variety of obvious concerns, like: How much waste will be created and how will it affect the marine environment? Can the cages withstand major storms and what happens if one wanders away from the farm site, since the cages are not tied down and are only one mile from a humpback whale sanctuary? The cages use a new technology to generate their own energy to remain in one place by sucking up sea water from below - how will this affect benthic and pelagic organisms? Caged fish often attract predators, like sharks - how will an increase in sharks - traditionally revered Hawaiian animals - near the farm be handled (some farms have simply killed them!)?The DEIS process is a way for the public to have input on projects using public lands (or in this case waters). It gives us the chance to better understand the broad potential impacts of a project and to mitigate or avoid problems before they happen by voicing our concerns, early. Learn more about the Ahi Aquaculture Proposal and ask Hawaiian Oceanic Technology and the approving agencies to address these questions before we hand over our waters for a project that could hurt our ocean and wildlife in it.Sincerely,Rob Parsons and Christina LizziFish ProgramFood and Water WatchFood & Water Watch is a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that runs cutting edge campaigns to help ensure clean water and safe food. What a wonderful experience to share with others. I must admit, I had fun observing na keiki pounding kalo. There were many who guided and others discussed our ho'oilina. Music was sung by different po'e and massage tables were set up to ease stress and tension. I was able to be one of the first to get a massage. Maka'i to the kumu who taught them the skills. I left the table feeling lite as a "feather." How amazing it was to ease the tension and decrease negative energy that usually occur on my L4/L5.Mahalo Ke Akua and the po'e who were there! This fest will become part of our ho'oilina from this day forward. Mahalo uncle Charlie and brother Paul R.from Waihole for the poi we always purchase for Moloka'i. These are two special men we thank for sharing and caring about my 'ohana. LOL!Read more…

By Leon SiuWhat was intended to be the big 50th anniversary celebration at the State Capitol on March 18 sent the exact opposite message than the State of Hawai`i intended. The fifty or so demonstrators who went to the capitol with messages of “FAKE STATE,” “A HISTORY OF THEFT,” “HAWAIIAN INDEPENDENCE,” in orderly, peaceful protest completely stole the show. When they got there, the demonstrators found that the state’s only planned public celebration of the 50th anniversary of statehood had retreated into the house chamber, leaving the capitol, the rotunda, the steps, the entire exterior, open to the voices of opposition. Thus, to the public — the tourists visiting the capitol grounds, the people in passing cars, the legislative staff peering over the railings, the deputy sheriffs, the local and international press looking for pictures and sound bites — the only visible message delivered in the clear light of day was: “the State of Hawai`i is a Fake State.”It was all over the internet, MSNBC, even in far off India; “Hawai`i is a Fake State.”Leon Siu is the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Ke Aupuni O Hawai`i, the Hawaiian Kingdom, and has served in that capacity since 2000.Read more…

Maui News - March 6, 2009The Akaka Bill, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands are all a compromise of true reconciliation, a total distraction to overt giving back what was stolen. They form a strategy conjured up by the Tavistock Institute think tank in order to keep the masses occupied, pitted against each other and creating a distraction while picking the pockets of nations in broad daylight - Hawai`i included! The issues of ceded lands and who actually has legal title to it is a pile of kukae! What ceded lands are we talking about? The land was seized, not ceded! Thanks to years of propaganda production, ceded lands has become a household word confusing even our own.We all better wake from the hypnotic state induced on us all, whether by choice or by deception, whichever way you look at it.We better all wake up before we self-destruct in the hands of those seeking to rule this world under a one world government, a new world order.Hanalei ColleadWailuku, MauiRead more…
Even before the superferry was destined for Hawai'i, we already knew of its military agenda. As we already know Admiral Fargo is so full of shit; it's coming out of his pores. HSF was courting the military in Hawai'i at the onset, if you remember; plus giving them a free trip around O'ahu to build support for it. Did island residents get the same kind of invitation? Of course not! Military always get the special privileges that the local residents don't get.If HSF wanted local support; it would have extended the same privilege, don't you think? Most supporters for the HSF were the military and personnel (famiies). Clueless islanders fell right into line with them. They're the same people I could sell the brooklyn bridge to without much effort. They're the ones that lack critical thinking; just watch Jay Leno's interviews on Tonight Show and you will see the same kind of people we are talking about. There are a lot of local people just like that, too! Monkey see---monkey do!Unfortunately, the local people are caught in the crossfire and needlessly lost their jobs by being the pawns of this whole seditious process of politics-military agenda.TaneThe NY Times details some Superferry military connections.http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/22/us/22ferry.htmlThe New York TimesMarch 22, 2009A Hawaii Ferry Ends Its Choppy RideBy CHRISTOPHER PALAHONOLULU - The Hawaii Superferry made its final interisland voyagelast week, capping a period marked by lawsuits, low ridership andsuspicion that its ultimate purpose had more to do with militarycontracts than with connecting the Hawaiian islands. On Monday, the State Supreme Court effectively grounded the vessel, the Alakai, when it struck down an act passed by the Legislature lastyear that exempted its operator, Hawaii Superferry Inc., fromcarrying out an environmental impact study. The company said it wouldnot appeal the decision."We're going to have to go out and find other employment for Alakai,"said the president of Hawaii Superferry, Thomas B. Fargo, a retiredNavy admiral who once commanded American forces in the Pacific."Certainly the military may very well want to lease this particularship."The Marine Corps already leases a similar transport catamaran, theWestpac Express, in Okinawa, Japan.A shipbuilding analyst in Florida, Tim Colton, said the company'sowner and chairman, John F. Lehman, a former Navy secretary, was wellpositioned to lease the Alakai and a just-finished sister ship to theNavy. In its 19 months of sporadic operations, the Alakai - an $85 million,350-foot aluminum catamaran that sliced through some of the world'sroughest seas at 40 miles per hour - is widely thought to have lostmoney for Hawaii Superferry. The passenger-vehicle ferry usuallyoperated well below the 50 percent capacity that the company haddesignated as its break-even point. For much of the winter, itoperated at about 25 percent capacity, according to figures releasedby the company.Responding to a lawsuit filed by environmentalists, the State SupremeCourt initially struck down a permit that the administration of Gov.Linda Lingle, a Republican, had granted Hawaii Superferry to operateits boats without an environmental assessment. After that ruling, Ms.Lingle persuaded the Legislature to pass the act exempting thecompany from the requirement. Why the company chose to risk operating without an environmentalreview, which would have taken the better part of a year, has beenthe matter of debate across the state, with Mr. Lehman's backgroundleading to speculation that Hawaii Superferry was primarily hoping toprove itself to the United States military.Nearly two years ago, a former chief executive officer of Austal USA,an Alabama shipyard that built the Alakai, was quoted in a localweekly, Pacific Business News, as saying the ship was too big for itsmarket of 1.3 million people."I just worry about getting enough business to cover costs because ofthe sheer size of it," said the executive, Alan Lerchbacker.Mr. Lerchbacker said that he had suggested Hawaii Superferry order a230-foot vessel but that the company instead ordered two 350-footmodels. The Alakai traveled between Oahu and Maui; the second ferry, the Huakai, was completed last week and had been scheduled to linkOahu and the Big Island.State Representative Hermina M. Morita, a Democrat and chairwoman ofthe Committee on Energy and Environmental Protection, said she neverthought either ferry would be profitable."You look at the players involved," Ms. Morita said. "You have toquestion their motives."In November, Austal USA was awarded a contract to build up to 10military versions of the ferry.Austal's Australian unit had built scores of giant aluminumcatamarans used as fast ferries around the world, but the UnitedStates requires that all ships sold to its armed forces must bedomestically built.Austal USA, with a shipyard in Mobile, Ala., was created in 2001."They have managed to become a major player in a very short time,"said Robert Button, a naval analyst with the RAND Corporation.Austal USA's vice president for external affairs, Bill Pfister, saidthat while the company had built several smaller ships in Mobile, theconstruction of the two Hawaii ferries had helped it develop the workforce and demonstrate the construction processes to bid credibly fora similar military version. The contract calls for one ship for the Army, with an option for fourmore for the Army and five for the Navy, for a total of $1.6 billion."Building the Superferry was very helpful in demonstrating that wecan build these ships in the United States as well as Australia," Mr.Pfister said.At a news conference on Thursday, Admiral Fargo denied that HawaiiSuperferry had any military agenda."We always get the question, 'Was this designed as a militaryoperation?' " he said. "That's absolutely not true."We certainly wouldn't have gone to the trouble to appoint her with836 first-class seats, to spend huge sums of money to establishservice here in Hawaii if that was our goal, which was unmistakablyto provide a regular, reliable commercial ferry service in theseislands."Copyright 2009 The New York Times Company
