  • Oh and glad to hear kupuna is sharing her lovely talent with the world and getting the recognition for the living treasure that she is. Would love to reunite anytime, anywhere except for be forwarned... I have a baby as a new appendage. lol! She's a good baby though...Future kapa maker...I'm starting her young from the time she was in my opu. lol!
  • Lisa, you are so funny. I love all that you are doing and I wanted to wala`au with you about a grant I'm writing on making a kapa hui and to beat burial kapa. Gordean gave us permission to have our first meeting there on Maui at her beautiful place. Terry begged me to ask you if you could do a dye thing for us. I know it took you two years to gather and it would not be as thorough of a workshop as the two day one...but we could kahea to whomever is coming to bring dye la`au and we could also put the funding in the grant for your presentation so can you give me a guestamation of how much it would be and if you have time. I didn't finish writing it yet so this is just before the fact legwork, if ya know what I mean. So since you "are" the queen of dye lady. lol! You can think about it. Would love for you to be in the kapa hui too. If you have time but I know you don't...lol! Me too. but the ancestors are driving this grant, not me...

So I'm lost in mommy momi land now. lol! but Dalani has inspired me to beat out some kapa and it she is giving me great tips and I think this site is a great venue for us. I posted a picture on my my page slideshow of the pueo design watermarks and the wahine mo`o ones that I carved. (Uncle Sol Apio's idea). but since your technology keeps blinkin out on you, maybe it's too hard. By the way, I don't think the others get notified if you answer on your own page so I'll tell them that you answered. I'm sure they neva know...Hows the iliahi seeds? Shoot.. I could wala`au with you forever. I miss you sis...
  • Oops, I am trying to get the hang of this, and keep getting disconnected.Anyway as part of the last dye workshop I prepared a two hour lecture that covers the history of Hawaiian dyes, processes, additives and such that I use. I gave the lecture to about 60 people and then had 20 do the actual handson. The lecture is a bit more portable than the whole handson part so I may be able to take that part on the road to other islands. I just need to hire someone else to do my work so I can do what i like to do!
    Aloha Lisa
  • Oops got disconnected. anyway I was in Kona at the Amy Greenwell Grow Hawaiian fair two weeks ago and got to visit with Kupuna Marie McDonald. She is very excited and busy preparing for a one woman show at the Art Academy sometime in November. I plan to be at the opening whenever it will be. I can't wait to see her new creations. Maybe we can have a mini reunion then.
  • Aloha everyone! Sorry not to leave any comments the other day but I am slammed at work. we are getting ready for our Earth Day event on April 19. Lots of hands-on activities including kapa, and cordage. Come if you on island.
  • Aloha e Lisa, Glad to you see you're on Kapa Wale No. Mahalo for sharing the recipes for the dyes. Shortly after getting them I led my students in making natural dyes from the many la'au maoli that we have growing on our campus. They had a ball picking all the yellow pua from the ma'o. And we all loved watching the yellow pua turn into a beautiful green dye. We tried many different la'au including the red ti. I know it's not maoli but, guess what? It makes a beautiful dye but you need plenty of it. The 'olena and alae is still one of my favorites. Be sure to tell us when you're going to have another dye workshop. Malama pono aloha ahui hou, Sabra
