  • Hey, Bay Area Locals!
Nov. 20, 8 PM, Sonoma Cafe, 2131 Durant (at Oxford), Berkeley, CA. FREE!
Join us for a showing of Mauna Kea: Temple Under Seige - the acclaimed documentary by Joan Landers and Puhipau (Na Maka o Ka 'Aina) on the struggle to preserve the sacred mountain, Mauna Kea, from even more telescope development and environmental devastation. Clarence Kukauakahi Ching will be on hand to talk about the struggle and answer questions. Mahalo to Paul Kealoha Blake of the East Bay Media Center for setting this up!
Please come prepared to purchase cafe drinks and food from Sonoma Cafe, as they are giving us the space for free.
Please email me here at MaoliWorld if you'd like to attend (just to give the cafe guys a rough estimate of the head count...).
Looking forward to seeing some of you folks there!
  • Aloha Waihili:
I was so looking forward to going to Berkeley for the film festival, but something came up at the last minute and I couldn't go. I wasn't happy about that...better luck for me next time.
Regarding pro-independence activities: if there are any Pacific Islander or Hawaiian festivals going on in November, it would be nice to have a booth set up. In these kinds of festivals that I've attended, I have yet to see any pro-independence booths. Maybe I missed them. It's great to highlight the beauty and cultural aspects of the country, but people also need to be kept aware of a historical wrong that needs to be righted.
This is all I can think of for now. I'll come back with more ideas; hopefully more people will weigh in with what they'd like to do.

  • Welcome to all who have recently joined. And are there suggestions for things you would like to do in the Bay Area as a pro-independence community?
  • Aloha e Shannon,
Yes, I agree with you about the trash - that is so disrespectful I can't even believe it! Better the trash be shipped out and taken the continent for disposal!
The dates above are for last year - but maybe I should find a way to put new dates up for this year!
    Perhaps between Nov. 6 - 20!
    Amy
  • I just heard some idiot on the radio proposing that Hawai'i's trash and recycling should be dropped from National Guard planes into one of its active volcanoes. I didn't know if he was trying to be funny but it sounded absolutely disrespectful and repulsive to me, esp. when he said it could be done with a ceremony to appease Mme Pele...maybe throw in some candles and flowers along with the trash...unbelievable. He never said he was kidding. That's one of many reasons why the US needs to get out yesterday!!!!
  • Are these dates for 2010? I would like to attend. Thank you.
  • Aloha kakou,

To commemorate the good news that the Akaka bill is stalled - hopefully forever - I dug up the lyrics that Puanani and I wrote about the Akaka Bill. Puanani sang this in Thomas Square in 2004, for Ka La Ho'i Ho'i Ea (and I felt extremely honored - 'cause I thought we were just goofing around!) - the same day that Ku Ching, Jim Albertini, Baron Kaho'ola Ching, a few other folks and I were flying the flag on top of Mauna Kea, the day before Ku's annual Huaka'i.

I thought other folks might enjoy these re-written lyrics and the story! Feel free to use 'em and send 'em along to any who might enjoy them.

Also, I bought a copy of Noho Hewa from Keala Kelly's website. Anyone in the SF Bay Area want to come watch? Let me know!
    Mahalo!

O Danny Boys, O Danner Girls-An Akaka Bill Protest Song
New Lyrics by Amy Marsh and Puanani Rogers

(Based on "O Danny Boy," lyrics by Frederick Edward Weatherly, 1848-1929, and the melody, "Londonderrey Air")

O Danny boys, the bill, the bill is failing--
And will be swept away soon with the tide.
O Danner girls, Hawaiians won’t be crawling--
Oppression soon must go and we will bide.

So don’t come back with falsehoods wrapped in paper,
And don’t you bring us laws to take our land.
We’ll not agree, in sunshine or in shadow,
O Danny boys, O Danner girls, we’ll take a stand.

And til we know the Akaka bill is dying,
Until it’s dead, as dead as it can be,
We’ll stand and tell the world it’s false and lying,
We’re never giving in, we will be free.

And we shall hear our children’s children’s children,
And all their lives shall warmer, sweeter be.
For we’ll not stoop to ransom off their freedom.
So boys and girls, give up this travesty!

  • ALOHA Kakou, e Ke Aupuni Moi O Hawaii, The AKaKa BILL is just as Illegal as the "Joint Resolution of Annexating The Hawaiian Islands." In that that the AKaKa BILL is in violation of the Constitution of the United States. The Hawaiian Kingdom was not a Tribal nation as the Indian Tribal nations. The only way lawfully that the United States can recognize Native Hawaiians is as a Foreign nation. A Foreign nation where our Kanaka Maoli people along with other people not of our blood were a Nation among the nations of the world. Queen Liliuoklani was not only the Queen of our Kanaka Maoli people but she was Queen of all of the people of the Hawaiian Kingdom nation.

Oct. 24th International Day of Climate Change Action - go to 350.0rg

Aloha kakou, 350.org is an international organizing collective determined to influence the Dec. 2009 Copenhagen Climate Treaty, set to be negotiated Dec. this year. I will be planning an action for this day, to be held in the SF Bay Area. Anyone want to get involved too? "350" is the number of parts per million of carbon that is the outer limits of what our planet, and all life, can endure and heal from. We are currently at 389-390 PPM. 275 PPM is what our planet has had from the beginning,…

50 Days of Resistance and Solidarity

Aloha kakou, I've been feeling badly about not being able to participate in any of the protests against "Fakehood," and especially about not having organized anything here! So, instead I hereby pledge fifty consecutive days of taking at least one action a day to get the word out about the Kingdom, in addition to personal spiritual practices to release any ancestral or familiarl connection I may have with the continued occupation of Hawai'i. This may not be much, as there are many, many…
