Maui News - October 18, 2009...The Akaka Bill says you have to first be a U.S. citizen to "qualify" as a "Native Hawaiian"; then you must have 50 percent or more Hawaiian blood and be a descendant of the original inhabitants of the Hawaiian Islands, who lived prior to 1778, to "qualify" as a "Native Hawaiian."If you have 49 percent or less Hawaiian blood and cannot trace your Hawaiian genealogy before 1778 you are not "Native Hawaiian."If the Akaka Bill passes into law or not, the attacks on Hawaiians will not go away. I strongly believe it will intensify like what we've seen on the national scene since President Obama took office. But what is disturbing is should the bill pass we will see more of the rich getting richer by making the poor pay for it all.Foster AmpongKahului, Maui
I'm sorry that this is happening however, there wasn't a sympathetic person that understood where Hawaiian Homesteaders were coming from since 1974 especially every politician on board, especially those wannabees. Now it's come down to the brass tackey of the law...which shouldn't be at this time. But, it's convient and that's how come and why the 50% plus bloodquantum exist. It's so sad because as we speak they are creating programs that are punitive and down right inhumane for those of us who are on the homestead. Every childs social security number that reside on homestead are being zapped up for programs up until they are 18 of age. The child can belong to this particular program (what ever program wants that child as slave labor) up until 26 years of age providing he fail. If the program don't want you than that's all good.
I attended my association meeting here in Waianae and QLCC and DHHL wanted to pay for our membership so that the roll can belong to them and we have no vote just advocacy like with what OHA did in 1978. It seems to me QLCC wants to harness the children and rein them in for absolute control in a punitive program. QLCC was the agency that created the foster care to where they are today, 3,000 was auctioned off to the highest bidder on the California Coast. Where are these kids today, on the streets. So don't think you are missing out, it's all good. Count your blessings you are not part of the progam that dam's you to hell. Kaohi
