  • Aloha e Aroha,
Are you putting together a panel for the AHA San Diego conference for 2010? I'm trying to put together a panel on Language and history, and am wondering if you could know of any Maori colleagues who I could contact regarding this subject.

I think I will probably want to give two papers at the conference. Any ideas about what you will be submitting? I would be keen to be on a panel with you if we could find a good subject!!!
    Aloha,
    Noe
  • Aloha e kuu hoa Aroha! You can bet that long before we are finalizing our plans to visit Te Ika a Maui, I will be in contact with you! Mahalo for offering to spend some time with us as we acclimatize in Aukland, no doubt we will have some time at both front and back of our trip there.

    Maori (writers) Battalion.

(for Therese and Maraea: because everyone has to write a tribute to the 28th)

funny how it’s called a writing retreat.

    retreat:
    to where?
    from who?
    from where?
    why? for how long?

    who said ‘go’?
    who first bled?
    who first drew blood?
who drew the lines of battle?
who holds the white flag, and who decided not to fly it?
who placed weapons in hands, shirts on backs, boots on feet?

what have we run out of,
that we need to retreat right now?
    plans? fighters? courage? supplies? time?

who waved us off at the shore?
who misses us while we’re gone?
who folded clothes, helped pack bags, cooked treats?
who wonders if we’ll be remembered for bravery or mortality?
who is thinking about what we’re doing, and where, right now: at this very minute?

    whose messages won’t be delivered?
which equipment have we had to leave behind?
what hard work do we turn our backs on as we turn our backs?
who lies buried under the soil we’re leaving: part of the ground over which our hunters will tread?

    **

so many questions about what’s risked
    what’s left behind
    what’s lost

    **

    other questions:

    **

what if it’s not a retreat?
what if we’re not running away?
what if we’re not leaving the battleground but creating new ones?

what if this is part of the strategy?
what if this is our chance to ready/ aim/ fire?
what if this isn’t a retreat at all but the attack for which we’ve been so carefully and lovingly trained?

  • Aloha Aroha~!!

Is that how you say hello in New Zealand?? And yep, it really was touching to read it. Do you write poetry as a hobby or professionally?? I, too love to write poetry. But I'm not as good as you. I'm still young, so I have much to learn about poetry.

    A Hui Hou!!
