Aloha Kakou!
The next kapa class at LCC will be from September 10 to October 29, 2009. We will also schedule in a saturday to work at the Makaha mala wauke. Go to http://www.leeward.hawaii.edu/ocewd/ for more information or you can call them at 455-0479 to register. This class is limited to new students only, but I am going to try and put an advanced kapa class together. I'll keep you posted.

E nei Uncle Wes! mahalo plenny and eh, thanks so much for all that great info you sent me about the different names of the kapa and the trees. I'll for sure put that on the website as soon as the webmaster/husband gets back from his brothers wedding in egypt! Ive been to the siapo.com site and its really great. i tell people to check it out all the time for info about siapo. I was able to visit with some of the Pritchard famiy when I was in Samoa last summer. One of the Mary's nieces showed me and Moana where her aunt planted her first wauke patch in that area. Its at the family property with the house built on that great elevated area and the unreal view up and down the coast. Beautiful place. Anyway, keep up your great work too Uncle and hope to see you some time on the big island.
aloha nui!

LCC kapa classes...
Hey gang..not sure of the status of the class times at LCC at the moment...when i looked at the Native Hawaiian Arts continuing ed. website all the classes are set at TBA (to be announced) and im unable to get a hold of the folks in charge. Will let you know something as soon as i do. We'll probably also plan for a ka'ala kapa class in october so stay tuned for that one!
long time no talk story, but i'm sure glad this medium is here to keep in touch. got good news. my nephew and his wife from maui are expecting a baby which will be due in october (my birth month...so crossing my fingers hanau on my b/d...selfish, yeah? teehee). i've begun the process of making a receiving blanket for the baby. i've already soaked the mo`omo`o, and now am further fermenting in banana leaves which i've placed in an `umu. going let dat sit for two weeks. i'm trying to recreate the process that was described to me by kupuna on my home island...oh yeah, e kala mai for not working hard on translating the oral material i got from interviewing kupuna during my last trip to moloka`i; please have patience with me.
this piece i'm planning on keeping white, but i've decided to scent it with maile and also add the petals of lehua blossoms during the first pounding. although the parents have decided to not know the sex of the baby until birth, my gut and intuition tell me that this first child will be a girl, so hence the reason for including lehua blossoms in the first pounding. any thoughts on this?
i'm still continuing in school, transfering to uh in spring 09, but still making time for my kapa. seems like i'm only able to steal an hour or two here and there, but at least i can still get my kapa fix. i'm also attending summer school, so yup, still going some kind nutz. i am soooooooo very grateful that you've started me on my path in kapa! this truly helps to keep me grounded, allows me to work through stressful situations before i attempt to work with my kapa, and yup, thank god for my sister so my mala wauke is expanding. i now have 16 plants thriving and coming some fat! i care for the branches by assuring that side branches at nipped at the bud! tee hee i harvested 2 8-foot wauke branches which i cut in half so 4 4-foot pieces---enough to make sure this baby is going be real comfortable and snug.
oh yeah...when is the next get together to pound kapa for iwi kupuna? if i can juggle everything, i truly would enjoy getting together with everyone for the camaraderie! aloha and chat with you again soon?
heeeyyyyy my friend! good to hear from you! yes i remember those banana leaf experimentations and my biggest problem with that was that the bugs got in and left the thing full of larve so i hope yours is sealed up good against the critters...let me know how it goes for you tho... and yes i have patience and will wait nicely for that translation ;). the baby blanket sounds wonderful and the lehua blossoms a great touch... you'll have to work on that baby's wedding kapa next for her trousseau! and yay for your sisters malama in the mala and your trees doing good, thats what i love to hear..more wauke being planted and used. come get more babies any time you need! i will be having class out at ulupo heiau this saturday (tomorrow) and we will be working on the niho oki and 'ohe kapala. youre welcome to come and bring your ukana and kuku....i can use someone doing kapa demo! hahahahah...we will be there as part of their ho'olaule'a, but if you want to do some kapa for the iwi i'll have some of that with our regular class and we'll be at blaisedell park in pearl city. another girl is coming to pound some of that and then the other students are working on their own kapa. let me know if you can come and i'll bring prepared stuff for you to beat. great to hear from you ha'upu and im happy your're on a kapa path too :) talk to you soon
