Maika'i kela 'oi, ikaika...I saw Andre's pics and audio of the pa'ahao doing aiha'a at Saguaro, AZ. I can only imagine what it sounded like inside Red Rock...We nevah give up yet--we're still going to have a Makahiki with deep meaning and integrity at Waiawa Correctional Facility. We hope the Department of Public Safety sees us as volunteers with good intentions--not as activists--and does the right thing in the name of our ancestors, our kupuna, our culture and ke Akua...Aloha!
MAIKA'I NO!!! we started the prison ministry here in AZ in Florence back in 2001 and were able with the help of Warden Luna to get the Makahiki celebration started for our guys in AZ. back in 2007 when they opened the 2 facilities here in Eloy and brought our guys back from Mississippi we were able to go for the opening of the Makahiki at Red Rock before they shipped Warden Luna to TX. In the evening we were able to "sneak" into Saguaro with Andre and the group visiting from Hawai'i and were able to experience the evening ceremony when about 50 of our guys did the aiha'a on the upper tear in one of the pods....the mana and passion was so immence and made it even more awesome with the revibration of sound in the pod...onipa'a ....and remember our pa'ahoa here in AZ, there's over 2000 of them....unfortunately we weren't able to go back to close the Makahiki with them nor have we been able to return as Hawai'i banned all "Hawaiian religious volunteers because we are activists"....are not christians activists....not all volunteers were banned, just the Hawaiian ones!!!
