Ka'u is my homeland. Since 1972, we surfed here at Punalu'u out by the reef in line with the old pavilon that is still standing after the 1975 tidal wave. That is another story, the tidal wave. We would walk from the town of Pahala to Punalu'u beach to swim and check out the action. (Neva had Mcdonald's back then) Aunty's lei stand still going.today. Congrad to cuz Guy Enriques councilman in Ka'u.I hope they restored Johnson pond side because of the pollution from Sea Mountain golf course. Ninole where the birthing rocks lived are now gone.An old Hawaiian named Honey Child lived in the Mizuno house near the pond at Punalu'u. Mizuno is a family run store in Pahala. Honey Child showed us the fishing grounds, the stars at night, and how his ancestors lived to survive. Food was abundant in those days due to the clean waters and land. There is a fishing spot called 99. Story goes that a fisherman caught 99 fish in one night but, could never catch the 100th fish.If you young ones don't know where 99 is;good mo fish for us old timers..nah...ask your father he should know...But no tell everybody whea stay.....he he..Thank you Uncle Honey Child for passing on your mana'o of this special place called Punalu'u beach.Punalu'u beach is for the people of Ka'u .From Kahuku,Ka Lae (South point),Wai'ohinu,Na'alehu,Honu'apo,Hilea, Pahala, Kapapala to Volcano from the mountians to the sea wherever Ohana lived. It is for the world to see, how we and our ancestors lived in the past as Ohana.Ka'u is our homeland. From my ancestors in Ka'u, to all of you:Our proud heritage is that of the Ohana of Ka'uWe are like the a'ali'i shrub, which hold fast with its rootsto the rocky soil of the homeland, whatever winds may blow.Today LLC's own the land. This land belongs to the people of Ka'u and The Hawaiian Kingdom, forever.KeliiKanaka'ole-o-Haililani 2009___________________________________Just some Ohana from Ka'u.The Great Mahele of 1848 Kamehameha IIILCA number, claimant, Island, district, ahupuaa and ili00020BMA Koakanu, I. • Mahalo for sharing more of your personal experience of Punalu'u. I went there as a child long ago and until I was on the board of Hui Malama 'Ola Na 'Oiwi (HMONO) [llate 90's - resigned because I was hapai decided I wanted to concentrate on family and get off boards I was on] we had a christmas party there in Ka'u and I met Honey girl. Aunty Pele is on the board of HMONO and still going as also she is on the HIBC. My younger sister is married to a Kalua'u from that area - it is sooo beautiful. I knew you would enjoy the video and glad we can have it as a record here in Maoliworld.
