  • could this be more one sided?
  • E Lana...notice how Burgess always likes to throw in SUPREMACY, which translates to these people as WHITE PEOPLE NOT SUPREME, and that bothers them. It's like 1887 all over again, they didn't feel that Kanaka Oiwi could run the government and felt threatened by the influx of Chinese and so they had to make it so that THEY were still supreme.
  • Kala mai but they called their piece "Native Hawaiians struggle for cultural identity"

    Fair and balanced??? NO.

Some people have UH pride and I can understand. However this quality of "journalism" by UH journalism students and former Ka Leo desk editors Casey Chin and Meghan Lopez seems atrocious. They spend a little over three minutes basically saying nothing. IMHO they could have produced something brilliant. Instead they chose the easy way out and did not take a stand while spreading some misinformation about Hawaiians which does Hawaiians a disservice. For example:

    1. At 2:55 or so... Hawaiians are struggling for their land? Huh? They are fighting for their property rights as legal heirs.

    2. Struggling for cultural identity? Like the hula instructor Hegerfeldt said at :27 "we are Hawai'i."

This video is so annoying. First the narrator says that we are struggling for cultural identity then a hula instructor says that she KNOWS who she is. Then Sandra Punani Burgess acts as though she speaks for all Hawaiians. There are approximately 401, 061 other Hawaiians and all of the Hawaiians whom I know do NOT want the Akaka Bill but not because they think that they are better than others. Burgess is so annoying. Alot can be said about self censorship because the more she opens her mouth the more it removes all doubt that she looks like the fool but Punani Burgess is NOT a good representation of Hawaiians. Neither is her husband the know-it-all H William Burgess.

They took first place in the Sixth Annual Fox News Channel "College Challenge" with their video which butchered the language and in the last tried to make it seem as though it is the solution.

Fox News awarded them with $10,000 and another $10,000 for UH. It's great that they won but in the end what does their video do? Bring attention, recognition, and money to them at the expense of Hawaiians. Sure they won $10,000 for themselves and for UH Manoa but what did it do for HAWAIIANS? Nothing!

Worse they did not mention the premise of the Akaka Bill aka Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act which is really the Native Hawaiian LAND Reorganization Act which tries to strip title from Hawaiians and their legal heirs. IMHO that is not cool.

I don't rely on "Fox News" as a source of fair, accurate, and UNBIASED information though.... Same goes for the local B.S. media but the students won money for themselves and for UH. That is great... but how they portrayed Hawaiians as "struggling" to figure out who we are... that's not great for Hawaiians. Like other Hawaiians I already know who I am.

Stop the Akaka Bill which is really the Native Hawaiian LAND Reorganizat... ... so that they can't transfer the title held by Hawaiians and their legal heirs.

They could have stated something similar in defense of Hawaiians. Instead they chose to sensationalize a very important issue that affects Hawaiians' daily lives and ... and collected $10,000. Oh and they appeared on TV:

Like Lopez stated, "Wait to put it into my bank account."

IMHO that is the most accurate part of this story.
