Tattoos are all the rage today, yet few of those who wear them realize this tradition originated many centuries ago from the cultures of Oceania and Hawai`i in particular.

And yet as popular as tattoos are now, the authentic cultural markings and patterns of old Hawai`i were nearly lost forever.

Almost gone, that is until Keone Nunes came along and saved them from cultural extinction.

Today, Hawaiian cultural tattoos are not only experiencing a revival, they also look distinctly different from all others you see.

Thatʻs because theyʻre not just body art for art sake, they actually tell you something about the wearer - who they are, where they come from and even their genealogy.

So naturally we were excited to visit Keone and take a tour of his studio where he does the work, and when we got there, we werenʻt disappointed.

Join us as we discover the authentic tattoos of pre-contact Hawai`i, why they were so much a part of the Hawaiian culture, and why theyʻre making such a strong comeback today in our brand new show all this week
on Hawai`i’s award winning Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

“Making His Mark - A Visit With Keone Nunes”

Kakau or cultural tattoos in old Hawai`i were highly stylized unique patterns that carried information about the individual, their family and even genealogy. An ancient art done over the centuries with hand-made tools, it was nearly lost forever until Keone Nunes single-handedly revived it. Donʻt miss our amazing visit as Keone takes us inside his studio where he shows us his tools, examples of his work and the age-old process of creating this priceless cultural art he has now brought back to life - Watch It Here

  • Hawaiian tattooing was documented in the Smithsonian Institute it was done spareringly, but done! I saw the actual pictures of tattoo on people.  I am sadden that I gave this book from the Smithsonian away!  So, I am very happy to see this documentation here because I do not like pulling it up on youtube.  Mahalo for preserving this information on Free Hawaii.
