STOP HOOPILI NOW‏

Last Call to Tell LUC to Protect our Food Security - Stop Ho'opili!

Aloha Kakou Save O'ahu Farmlands Alliance members and supporters,

Next week Thursday, March 15 and Friday, March 16, will be the last of the hearings at the Land Use Commission for the proposed Ho'opili development. Over 1,500 acres of the highest producing farmland in all of Hawai'i is on the line to be developed and lost forever. Protecting this farmland is crucial to achieving food security as we expect that what happens with this land will have a cascade effect on all future decisions to reclassify or preserve the remaining agricultural land in the state.

If you haven't already submitted testimony, or testified in person, this is your last call to speak up. Please recruit your family and friends. We've made it easy for you. Tell the Land Use Commission to DENY the petition to reclassify our precious agricultural land by sending an instant letter via our new policy portal. Or if you want to create your own letter, find help here.

You may also attend hearings and testify in person at Leiopapa Kamehameha Building located at 235 Beretania St, Room 204. Click here to read about the hearings last week. Click here to listen to one of the expert witnesses we brought in to make our case. Read 3/8/12 article by Cynthia Oi about why Ho'opili is a critical issue for agriculture.

Even if you don't testify, come to show your support and be part of these historic Land Use Commission proceedings. We will hold signs and banners from 7:30pm to 9:00pm on March 15 and 16 before the LUC hearings start. Click here to help our efforts.

Mahalo for your commitment to saving our farmlands,

SAVE O'AHU FARMLANDS ALLIANCE

PS - We want to apologize for technical problems that delayed a timely email to you to vote in the Sunday Star Advertiser poll asking whether the Ho'opili housing development on the Ewa Plain should be built. While we narrowed the gap in the hours that ensued, we naturally weren't pleased that hte results came out with a majority of the 55% vs 45% in favor of building Ho'opili. We thank the 250 of you who attempted to vote.
