That is, until he was invited to go along on a trip – to a prison in Arizona where Hawaiians were incarcerated far from home.
As you might expect, discovering the inmates hungry to rediscover their own culture and to rehabilitate themselves had a powerful effect on Ed.
So he did the only thing he knew how when he got back – he started a pa.
In ancient Hawai`i, a pa is an enclosure, and Ed’s pa is a refuge for Hawaiian kane or males where men could come and be safe. Where they could get back in touch with themselves and their culture.
On the beautiful windward side of O`ahu, Ed’s pa is just getting started. But even we could see the promise of great things to come. In his law enforcement and social work, Ed Gomes has seen more Hawaiian males discarded and imprisoned by society than he cares to. So he decided to start a pa, or men’s group, where Hawaiian males can come and work on themselves in a safe space. Ed gives us a unique behind-the-scenes tour of this future refuge and his plans to develop it into a program where all are welcome.
