Watching a documentary called
SLINGSHOT HIPHOP.
http://www.slingshothiphop.com/
Basically about how hip hop has helped the youth voice their opinions regarding their current situation, occupation, oppression & the death & distruction many of them witness constantly.
It's pretty depressing seeing how much oppression these Palestinians face with Israelis. They showed one of the rappers going to Tel Aviv, and how people are hesitant to allow an Arab on the bus, especially with a back pack. And when he was approaching some venue, a military guard stopped him, because he was speaking
Arabic. The camera-woman asked or verified that they were stopped & approached simply because that guy was speaking (actually he was rapping & speaking to the camera in Arabic), the guard said yes and escorted them away.
In another scene, they showed an apartment building that was blown up after the camera crew was just shooting there weeks before. Another scene was how their electricity gets shut off for whatever made up justified raeson.
It makes me realize how the U.S. continues to pretend this great, super power whose mission is to democricize (is there such a term) everyone around the world, that they're passifists (to some extent) and because of this false image, they can basically get away with murder. Not in the literal sense, but it is this ideology that makes people have a hard time believing that we are under occupation.
This makes me even angrier, yet watching this film, I understand that our situation has not escalated to that point like it is for the Palestinians. It isn't to the point where the language is suppressed, unlike how it has in the past. Nevertheless, it really makes me think a lot about Hawaii's situation. Most importantly, where can we go from this point, or when can we start to see things happening, whatever that "thing" really is. Either more discussions, education, protesting, whatever.
