MALAMA AINA

I envision sustAINAble communities on every island where the residents have everything they need within their reach because it was created in their community with the intention of malama aina. Living off that which feeds, our aina, the land that nourishes our body, mind and soul is not unreachable. We already see the thriving in various communities that are producing healthful food, outstanding schools, nurturing families, wonderful music, healing facilitators and other magnificent models of pono living.Where are these communities? Why are they able to succeed in this moment? Who are these people that live malama aina? I want to know!If you know of communities, persons, organizations, or hui's that practice malama aina, please share your manao here so that more of us dreamers can live a reality of pono. Post stories, addresses and other contact information such as websites, etc.

  • Aloha, e Alohilani--
There are quite a few individuals that share your dream of sustAINAbility. And are inspiring the rest of us to go back to the `āina, and help to feed your families, relatives, kūpuna, neighbors, restoring the balance.

Uncle John and Aunty Tweety Lind and the Kipahulu `Ohana have been doing this for many years since the ʻ80ʻs at the Kapaahu Farm in the national Park.

New project in `Iao Valley at Lo`iloa in back of the Hawai`i Nature Center...Kawewehi Pundyke is helping youth, college students learn about self-reliance, kuleana, aloha, mālama `āina, mahi`ai kalo in a lo`i kalo revitalization project. The ultimate goal is to restore the ancient patches there and help provide kalo to our kūpuna.

Will get websites and info on other projects - hope this helps..A hui hou, Nāone
  • Us hippies out in Ha'iku are doing some stuff... talk to you in class tomorrow. Also check the Facebook groups, there will be plenty of Maui citizens doing their thing in several groups on there. I think they are meeting soon about soil health. As for me I go on Saturdays to keep the rows of dryland taro weeded and I have a (teeny tiny) garden.
