Those who live on islands must have successful land management systems or those who live there will eventually starve and die.

Such was the case with the ahupua`a system in ancient hawaii.

It worked so well that Hawai`i of old was able to sustain a population similar in size to todayʻs and yet no food was imported.

It was all grown locally and it was abundant, healthy and fresh.

Thatʻs why it should come as no surprise the ahupua`a system is making a strong comeback today, and one of those leading the way is Mahealani Cypher.

                              Back in 2007 a Bishop Museum publication ran an article by Dieter Mueller-Dombosis of the UH Dept. of Botany on Ahupua'a in which he outlines how forest ecological knowledge is applied in restoration of Ahupua'a via silvaculture.     The boundaries and ahupuaa system was drawn by Hawaiians yes, in a high school by students.  They were under the guidance of missionaries.  I am a geographer, and have done much needed studies on this problem.  This is a Hawaiian Kingdom era which includes commerce treaties with US.  We did not come from the Pu'u as bird droppings, we came from the Kai.  Need to think!  If we are promoting commerce than the treaties with US are binding?
