"The Queen & I - A Visit With Sydney Iaukea"

Imagine discovering some long lost family history which reveals your relative was a close adviser to Queen Lili`uokalani in the Hawaiian Kingdom government. Thatʻs what happened to Sydney Iaukea, doing research for her doctoral dissertation. Lucky for us she turned her work into "The Queen & I" a fascinating book about Hawai`i from the time of the illegal overthrow to the territorial days. Donʻt miss our visit with Sydney as she tells us what it was like to make her astounding discovery and what impact it has for every one of us today - Watch It Here

  • Aloha kakou.

Portions of Dr. Laukea's book have been digitalized online by Google Books and it is both comprehensive and easily readable whereby you rapidly develop a rapport with the author.

Two observations on this warm interview:

    (1) It is noteworthy that Sydney Laukea mentions how names have changed, in Honolulu Puowaina is now Punchbowl, Aliaa'akai is now Salt Lake, Pu'uloa is now Pearl Harbor, etc. These name changes are often to the detriment of their actual origin, for example o'io'ina is a resting place for travelers and lua ki is a hole from which water spurts i.e. an artesian spring.

    (2) Dr. Laikea is astute in suggesting the U.S. educational system has concealed the true unsavory aspects of Hawaiian history and U.S. Governmental interference in favor of it's own image.

BTW just loved to hear the cooing of the common Hawaiian pigeon's which can be heard twice in the background trees during the course of the above interview. Onipa'a!
