Hawaiian Independence AlliancehawaiianindepndenceallianceLots of ideas...lots of very good mana'o. Just wanted to take some time and explain WHY a few of us started this petition...HUI KAI 'ULA. Pono, who started this site for HIA, of which I am also a founding member, and I went to a Mana (political group formed by Ikaika Hussey of Maoliworld) meeting in Wai'anae re: Ceded Lands. The few people who showed up for that were bright stars in a sea of darkness. They were saying how hard it was to reach the people in Wai'anae...a very depressed community. Times are tough all over...but extremely so along the Wai'anae Coast. My friend Pomaikaiokalani Kinney always reminds us that "Wai'anae" has more Kanaka Maoli residing there than anywhere else on earth. It is NOT by accident that Wai'anae is suffering more than others. While at that meeting...I asked if anyone had seen "Noho Hewa". Two said yes. I suggested a "showing" to inform the people of Wai'anae of what their rights are. Now..there is nobody who knows pain and suffering MORE than them. But, I find that Noho Hewa puts a name to their pain. It shows them options, of ways to understand clearly that what they have been "feeling" and going through is a direct and deliberate attack on our culture, our history, and our people. It shows that we have choices. We CAN resist. We CAN Ku'e. We CAN unite....and We MUST.So...this small group of 5 decided to show Noho Hewa in Wai'anae. One of us, Mana Kaleilani Caceres (see his site on Maoliworld) will be singing before the showing. His songs are filled with clarity, of resistence, of strength of our people. We expect a crowd. Hopefully, we will keep spreading the word, spreading our TRUE history and not the one that THEY would have us believe....and spreading HOPE. The REAL kine...Not the kind that Obama speaks of. Surely his pushing of the Akaka Bill doesn't provide us with one ounce of HOPE. It takes it away. The showing of the film was to bring clarity, again...to name the pain. What do you send people HOME with? They might be angry, frustrated, and left even worse off feeling alone in their own pain. SOOOO...we came up with the idea of redoing the KU'E petition. We are finalizing it as we speak...so that it is done PONO. We want to honor our kupuna who came before us. I alone found so many ohana in there. We all do.Even non-kanaka are in there and they are a very welcomed site. We need all people of all ethnicities to see that JUSTICE for US...is justice for them. One of the people in the film, Dean Saranillio likes to end all his talks with..."An injury to ONE...is an injury to ALL". He is not a kanaka maoli, but told me that once he read in a book (and he was never a big reader) about what happened to Hawaiians in their own homeland...he was hooked. Hooked on working towards the righting of the wrongs committed against our people...You actually don't need to look much futther to see that US foreign policy (not only domestic) has wrecked havoc with cultures and peoples...worldwide. It is that HISTORY that we challenge. Americans (as defined) do not have an exclusive on the right to LIFE, LIBERTY, and the PURSUIT of HAPPINESS. It is for all peoples. We will have OUR version of the KU'E petition available soon online, as well as will be starting it on paper at that showing. Please be careful. There are soooo many petitions going around...many are pushing the Akaka Bill, Kau Inoa deceitful name registration (now OHA is even poised to have Non-Hawaiians sign up), and a sell out settlement on OUR so -called Ceded/Seized Lands. Be careful what you sign...and wonder where it is going. The reason I am writing all this is because just yesterday, we became aware of several petitions...and when we looked into them...they were connected to just those actions which WE all stand AGAINST.We will be taking the petition out to the different 'Ahupua'a of O'ahu, and will get them to our other moku. We need the numbers, and we need the support. I will be posting the language of that petition some time today on our site. Please take a look....NOHO HEWASat.
