Right now, I am sitting in an office at the hospital in Lalako'a...for those of you that dont know where lalako'a is, it is better known as Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. This place is small yet peaceful. The land is fertile, kalo is grown, mai'a is plentiful, ulu is everywhere, and tall buildings are scarce. The people are still living off the land, with the exception of those that are slowly walking away from the taro patches and into the supermarkets, but there are a few people left that still live off the land. It is sooo wonderful to see!Our languages are very similar. So close that it's easy to pick up! here's a few that I found very similar.Pe'ea koe?Ko ai to'o ingoa?MeitakiUaWell thats all i can think of for now...i will keep you updated!Ulu
That's beautiful! Mahalo for sharing, I was just thinking about pics from you while washing dishes, came back to my computer to work and got your email.
This picture reminds me of Guam where I've lived most of my life. I remember we used to windsurf from East Agana Bay to a little island just like in this picture. There was a not so deep channel where the manta ray's would swim under our boards. It was like heaven! Good snorkeling too.
I am actually here doing a research project. However, I am living next door to a true local. He is so good to talk to! He isn't too old yet old enough to have seen the many changes that have happened to his aina. I wont say I dont have family here, because I have made a family here. The people here treat you as though you are family even if you aren't! I will try to post pictures but not sure if they will upload. Internet is a bit slow, but ive gotten used to it.
I live on Oahu, but my family is from Maui. Thank You for your offer though! Id love to share my experience with your class. Maybe one day!
Wow! That is really cool! What are you there for? Is it for education or do you have family there? Do you think you can post pictures? I would love to see them. And if you can, get stories from some of the kupuna there?
What island do you live on here in Ko Hawaii Pae Aina? If you live on Maui I'd love to invite you to one of our classes to share your story.
