I do have copies of our genealogy that I can mail to you. Email your address to me at lynlie@hawaii.edu. We are having a Hopkins family reunion next month @ Kailua Beach Park on July 18th from lunch time till evening. It would be nice if your family could come.
I'll share more as I can.
May I ask who your mom is? My Dad (Uncle Charlie) kept in contact with his Vickery cousins. Aunty Ellen married a Vickery and her children were raised with my grandpa, Charles Gordon Kailipeleuli Hopkins. Wasn't there a Carl and Fred Vickery? Did Fred get sent to Kalaupapa? I was talking to Aunty Myrtle Hopkins who married Pono Beamer, and she vaguely recalled being around when he was taken away.
Anyway, my grandpa was given his Hawaiian name when he returned to his kupunahine's birthplace of North Kohala, as a young man. His name was called out (kahea) in chant by a family kupuna. I am still learning about our genealogy and will be happy to share what I have. I do believe my father exchanged info w/ some Vickery's regarding this so you may want to ask within your 'ohana. Can you tell me where
Ellen is buried? I have some old pictures of her as a young woman that I found in my grandpa's collection. She and Aunty Mary were the older sisters who were born in Kohala. Angela, my kupunahine, was born on Oahu after the family re-located.
Only Hopkins still in Kailua is my oldest brother's daughter who lives in my grandpa's house in Lanikai. One of the last remaining original homes there. My grandpa formed the Mokulua Fishing Club and spent many nights camping on those islands, fishing for ulua. Place has changed so drastically I don't like going there anymore. Dad spent his youth in the swamp lands of Kailua where enchanted lake is now and Kalapawai w/ the Mahoe family. Much good fishing back then. We'll talk again soon.
E malama pono.
Yes we are family. My g-g-grandmother was Abigail Kamaka Aiwohi who married Charles Lewis Kamohoalii Hopkins. They had 8 children one of whom was Angela. She is my great-grandmother. Her sister was Ellen. My father knew the Vickery-Kaihenui family well. He was a minister and officiated at the funeral services of your grandmother ? (Kaihenui), who lived in Enchanted Lakes. He has since passed.
