`Olelo Hawai`i forum/chat room

Always wanted to see an online chat room where people were conversing in `olelo Hawai`i. As a 2nd year haumana that studies from puke it's hard to find folks to converse with. Could this site have that feature? Could allow all the continent maoli to connect to `olelo too.

  • Look for me in my lina poepoe ulaula olelo Hawaii!
    • Aue hupo paha wau - he aha la keia lina poepoe ulaula olelo Hawaii?
Aue, maybe I'm stupid - what is this Hawaiian language red circle?
      e a'o mai
    • Aloha mai kāua, e ʻOhukaniʻōhiʻa,

He kōkou paha noʻu, inā i hele aku ʻoe a heluhelu i kā Kainoahemolele blog, inā ua hoʻomaopopo ʻoe i kāna ʻōlelo e pili ana i ka lina poepoe ʻulaʻula ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. He mea Maikaʻi wale kona manaʻo, a hoʻomākeʻaka nō!

Perhaps this is of assistance, if you would have read Kainoahemolele's blog, you would understand what he said about the red Hawaiian language circle. His idea is fantastic and funny as hell.

      Aloha mai kāua, e Kainoahemolele,
Inā ʻike au iā ʻoe e noho ma kou lina poepoe ulaula olelo Hawaii, e noho no hoi au a kamailio me oe.

I will look for you, Kainoahemolele and your lina poepoe ulaula olelo Hawaii since I live in Waikiki. If I see you, I will sit with you and talk story in Hawaiian.

      Me ke aloha,

      Alohalani
    • Aloha mai kakou!

'Oiai akahi no au i "puka" mai UH mai me ka mekia 'Olelo Hawai'i, hemolele 'ole ko'u 'olelo Hawai'i. No laila, mahalo au i keia manawa e ho'oma'ama'a iho. A makemake au i kau ho'opololei 'ana mai ia'u! He mana'o ka'u: e kukakuka kakou i na mo'olelo Kauakukalahale Lapule mai ka Hoku-Buletina mai? Hoihoi loa ko NeSmith “'O Wai Ko'u Hoa Kupa?”

Though I just "graduated" from UH with a major in Hawaiian Language, my Hawai'ian isn't very good. So, I'm grateful for this opportunity to practice. And I appreciate your correcting me! I have an idea: shall we discuss the Sunday Kauakukalahale articles from the Star Bulletin? NeSmith's "O Wai Ko'u Hoa Kupa?" is very interesting!

      Nau me ka 'oia'i'o,

      Malulani
    • Mahalo e Alohalani, e hele ana au i kana blog e heluhelu i laila e pili ana o keia lina poepoe ulaula olelo Hawaii. Hiki paha i a`u e mahu'i i ka manao, ina kakau o ia i kahi lina poepoe ulaula ano liilii, no laila ina ku i loko o kela lina poepoe ulaula, hiki ke walaau i ka olelo makuahine wale no? E hoopaa ana au i keia manao ma kana blog i keia manawa no.

Mahalo Alohalani, I'll go to his blog to read there about this red circle of Hawaiian language. I can guess at the mana'o, if he draws a kind of small red circle, and then if you stand inside that red circle, you have to speak only in Hawaiian? I'll go confirm this thought at his blog right now.

      'Ohu
  • Aloha mai kakou!
Nui ko'u hau'oli i ka 'ike 'ana i ka nui o na kanaka i hoihoi i ke kama'ilio 'ana i ka 'olelo Hawai'i. He maika'i ho'i keia 'ano kakau a unuhi no na mea ma'a i ka 'olelo hawai'i kekahi, no ka mea i kekahi manawa he hana nui e hoi i ke ka'ina mana'o haole mai ke ka'ina manao hawai'i!

Gonna be a kinda literal translation :) Still using the Hawaiian mindset..

    Aloha to us all!
Great is my happiness to see the great amount of people who are interested in conversing in Hawaiian. It's a good thing this kind of writing and translating for those who are used to Hawaiian as well, because sometimes its hard to switch back to the Non-Hawaiian mindset from the Hawaiian mindset!

Now with a less Hawaiian mindset :)

    Hello All!
Im so glad to see everyone so interested in speaking Hawaiian. Writing and translating also good for those used to Hawaiian because it's sometimes hard to think Haole after thinking Hawaiian!

He kokua paha keia? 'a'ole paha? koe wale ka 'ike..
Maybe this was helpful, maybe not, it remains to be seen..
  • Aloha mai kakou. 'o au o Leilani. Mai Mau'i Mai au. He Hawai'i au. A'o mai 'ana au i ka 'olelo Hawai'i ma ka Punana Leo o Maui. Aia ka papa ma ka Po'akolu wale no, no laila, 'a'ohe lawa. Aloha everyone! I am Leilani, from Mau'i. I am learning the Hawaiian language at Punana Leo o Maui. Class is on Wednesday only, therefore, it is not enough. I do not have Hawaiian speaking friends therefore, it is hard to practice Hawaiian. I hope this will help. If anyone wants to chat online please contact me via email. Mahalo (e kala mai i'au if my Hawaiian is not very accurate)
