Aloha kakou,
It might be nice to begin to strategize about community leaders and organizations who either are or who may become allies of Hawaiian independence.
Anyone got community organizer names or organizations to add to the list? Who do you know who might be tempted to get involved as a supporter?
Caution: If you're thinking of a private person you know, don't name the person here in this list -- but if it's a public community leader you're thinking of, there's probably no harm in a mention.
I want to share how I tried, a few years ago, to interest a really dynamic community leader named Van Jones in Hawaiian independence and Maoli prison incarceration issues, also ho'oponopono as a possible tool for inner city conflict. I wrote a letter, the man graciously agreed to a meeting, and we did talk for a while. There was a community leader on O'ahu I was really hoping to connect him up with, too, but the O'ahu guy never made contact -- and neither did Van Jones.
Van Jones founded a police watch organization in Oakland, the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Green for All, Books not Bars, etc. He was on the board of Bioneers for a while. He's been leading the green jobs revolution in Oakland, CA and has written a book. Well, guess what? President Obama has just picked him to join the administration as an advisor on green jobs and sustainability.
Wouldn't it have been nice if some ongoing relationship had been established with this guy and some Maoli community leaders, so that mana'o could flow freely and be brought into the consciousness of the U.S.? I tried to create an interest in connection, but I didn't want to pester the guy...
Just one story -- but you never know what is possible when people connect!
