While not legally allowed as a replacement for medical or psychiatric treatment, there are many complementary uses of Ho'akaku, also called Hypnotherapy or Hypnosis:
Medical: to help ease pain or discomfort caused by various conditions, to give suggestions for healing.
Surgical: to ease stress and anxiety about surgery, to promote healing through positive suggestions. Often hypnosis CD's are allowed in surgery, so the patient listens even while under general anesthesia.
Birthing: to ease stress and promote relaxation for a pain-free childbirth.
Habit control: quitting smoking, nail biting, weight loss, etc.
Fear and Anxiety: fear of flying, stagefright, test and exam taking, and other anxieties.
Stress and Relaxation: dissolving stress, promoting relaxation responses of the body.
Trauma: helping to overcome sexual or other traumas.
Improving performance: in work or creativity.
Personal growth: increasing self esteem, exploring options, and supporting positive changes in a person's life.
Sexuality: addressing a variety of issues with positive suggestion, removing shame and trauma, increasing sensuality and enjoyment.
Past Life Regression: some view these as actual "past lives" -- others view these as useful subconscious narratives which affect present day life.
Can you think of other situations where hypnotherapy could be useful, particularly to Maoli families and communities?

The Medical Hypnosis weekend was amazing. It is truly interesting to hear the physical reasons why hypnotherapy can and does work. And I even learned about the "enteric nervous system" (which is part of our autonomic nervous system) - which some people call "the brain in our gut" (in other words, our na'au!)
The weekend was all about using hypnotherapy to decrease or diminish stress, and also repatterning our thinking so that our brain(s) can then repattern what's happening to our body.
More later. I'm still processing, and trying to think of how to describe the wealth of information of this weekend.

Hi Kamea,
I'm glad you're here!
I'm also wondering if hypnosis groups, created in community, by community, would be a helpful thing for addressing the multi-generational wounds inflicted by occupation and cultural appropriation, with a view to cutting and cleansing the ties of oppression in order to imua.
What do you think?
Waihili, what a great idea! I've been working on my website to promote Hypnosis and NLP education on the Islands. I can't quite give out the website just yet, as its not fully completed yet. In the meantime, email me on here whenever you get this. Also, check out www.hypnothoughts.com its the BEST hypnosis networking site bar none. There are a ton of great hypnotherapists that are from around your area in Cali.
