Akaku - Trance States

Trance states are natural to human beings. They are based on various brain waves. People often go into a light trance when they are daydreaming, watching TV, or driving "on autopilot." In this discussion, we will talk about the various trance states, and why they are useful to us.

  • Science has described our brain waves like this:

Beta - normal everyday consciousness. 13-40 cycles per second.
Alpha - light trance, light meditation and daydreaming. 8 - 13 cycles per second. (Hypnosis happens here.)
Theta - deep relaxation, creativity, ESP. 4 - 7 cycles per second. (Hypnosis happens here.)
Delta - sleep. 1/2 to 4 cycles per second.

In a Hawaiian context, how would we talk about this? I feel perhaps that we open to influences from Po and from na akua (or ke akua), na aumakua, etc. in trance states. Does this sound at all right? And I am assuming trance states are accessed during shamanic healing in other cultures. Thoughts?
