Aloha kaua e Kaanalike! Long time no see! Mahalo for creating this group!
There are no doubt several members of MaoliWorld already with artistic tendencies. Carl Pao, for one certainly, but I wonder who might be invited to join this group consciously, rather than waiting for them to notice its existence! Also, I would think that we should hijack Hanalei from MySpace to join MaoliWorld and jump into this group.
I am not familiar with the capabilities of this group. I notice some file attachment tools, and will try to upload a few images to this message, and insert an image into the message also.
Here, for example is Ku-i-ke-apo-lua, a ki'i punohu I carved a while back...
aloha,
'Ohu
Eo, e na pua Hawai'i. While I am not a master artisan like many of na kanaka represented here, I have some experience with makau in bone, and have taken some inspirations from Te Rangi Hiroa's book in starting ki'i wana (although I don't believe my ki'i wana will come out as cleanly as 'Ohu's :P)

Eo e Kapliku:
Mahalo for your makau images. It makes me want to see your kii wana/punohu images. It takes a sharp eye (or a nice lens) to bring the kii up in apparent size enough to play with the sculpting. When I first started, it was bright sunlight and naked eye only, now it is bright indoor light on a table with a good magnifying lens. Auwe keia lilo i elemakule! There is also a secret or two in preparing the spines before carving, that makes them a bit easier to work...
aloha!
'Ohu
Hereʻs my first shot at kiʻi pūnohu. A bit crude, but done by eye with an awl.
He is called Kuʻula-maka-hā.
I definitely need to keep practicing :P

Yeah, don't be afraid to try a whole series of carvings, different eyes, noses, mouth styles, until you settle into something that works. You got the symmetry thing going good, so now maybe study a whole range of Hawaiian kii styles and see if you can get similar styles in punohu form. I'll look forward to what you create.

I'll get started on some research this week, as school and work permit.
I'll post more later...
