Annexation of Hawaii, 1898

America's annexation of Hawaii in 1898 extended U.S. territory into the Pacific and highlighted resulted from economic integration and the rise of the United States as a Pacific power. For most of the 1800s, leaders in Washington were concerned that Hawaii might become part of a European nation's empire. During the 1830s, Britain and France forced Hawaii to accept treaties giving them economic privileges. In 1842, Secretary of State Daniel Webster sent a letter to Hawaiian agents in Washington affirming U.S. interests in Hawaii and opposing annexation by any other nation. He also proposed to Great Britain and France that no nation should seek special privileges or engage in further colonization of the islands. In 1849, the United States and Hawaii concluded a treaty of friendship that served as the basis of official relations between the parties.

A key provisioning spot for American whaling ships, fertile ground for American protestant missionaries, and a new source of sugar cane production, Hawaii's economy became increasingly integrated with the United States. An 1875 trade reciprocity treaty further linked the two countries and U.S. sugar plantation owners from the United States came to dominate the economy and politics of the islands. When Queen Liliuokalani moved to establish a stronger monarchy, Americans under the leadership of Samuel Dole deposed her in 1893. The planters' belief that a coup and annexation by the United States would remove the threat of a devastating tariff on their sugar also spurred them to action. The administration of President Benjamin Harrison encouraged the takeover, and dispatched sailors from the USS Boston to the islands to surround the royal palace. The U.S. minister to Hawaii, John L. Stevens, worked closely with the new government.

Dole sent a delegation to Washington in 1894 seeking annexation, but the new President, Grover Cleveland, opposed annexation and tried to restore the Queen. Dole declared Hawaii an independent republic. Spurred by the nationalism aroused by the Spanish-American War, the United States annexed Hawaii in 1898 at the urging of President William McKinley. Hawaii was made a territory in 1900, and Dole became its first governor. Racial attitudes and party politics in the United States deferred statehood until a bipartisan compromise linked Hawaii's status to Alaska, and both became states in 1959.

2007 - Joyclynn Acosta's research about the Doctrine of Political Question was entered into court in defense of 16 people who were arrested.  After consulting with Senator Daniel Inouye (dec.) she discovered that Hawaii was indeed a separate nation.  Their case of trespassing was dismissed with prejudice.

11 years ago on April 13th on a Friday myself and 3 others stood in front a Judge. We were accused of Criminal Trespass II reduced to Simple Trespass. The day we got arrested they put it on the 10 news about activist fighting for "Hawaiian" land. Wrong, we were standing for our rights and kuleana. After being looped in the system for months we had our day in court. The Prosecutor said if we could prove separation of jurisdiction and powers from both the State of Hawaii and the United States the Judge could recognize our claim. Our point was they could not apply their authority on Hawaiian Nationals. There were 16 arrested that day. On April 13 on a Friday I delivered what the prosecutor requested. I handed the clerk, to hand to the Judge, a letter from the late Senator Inouye. He was a United State Senator for the State of Hawaii. (two birds w/ one stone) He could not come to our trial due to a mandated Constitutional Separation of Powers. I looked it up and found within the Separation of Powers was "The Doctrine of Political Question". In this doctrine it speaks of land if created by another Country can not be decided in court. It is of a political matter between the Executives. The Judge took a look at the letter asked a few questions flipped thru his books and accepted my oral motion to dismiss with prejudice. The prosecutor had nothing else to rebut and the Judge rendered a decision to grant the Dismissal with Prejudice. I know this was not of my doing but the grace of ke Akua that worked this case. You see we were not suppose to appear that because the case was already dismissed w/out prejudice. The Judge asked why our names were on the calendar and all they could say was it was a mistake. My dad stood with me and he had his say in court. A week later all others were also dismissed w/prejudice.

    The claims to Annexation are part of the conspiracies against the Hawaiian Kingdom/Kingdom of Hawaii since 1826.  In 1840 with U.S. President Tyler and others, the moves to Annex Hawaii was documented by the Secretary of State - John Foster who helped direct the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani under U.S. President Benjamin Harrison's term in office.

      1893/01: Local oligarchs overthrew the government of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Harrison immediately recognized the coup achieved with the US forces that had been placed to give local insurrectionists crucial support. His secretary of state, John W. Foster—grandfather of John Foster Dulles (secretary of state 1953-59) and Allen Dulles (founding director of the CIA) was instrumental in arranging the support of these forces.

      Cleveland withdrew recognition of the self-declared insurrectional government. He did not support annexation by the US. He wanted the restoration of the lawful government led by Queen Lili’uokalani.
      William McKinley
      1897/03 – 1901/09 (assassinated in office)
      McKinley recognized the insurrectional government, now calling itself the Republic of Hawaii. He executed the Spanish-American War in Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico and The Philippines. The US used Hawai’i as a strategic source of re-supply during the war. He supported annexation and got Congress to vote in favor of it in 1898.

      As McKinley’s vice president Roosevelt had eagerly favored launching the Spanish-American War and supported annexation of Hawaii. After the war, he waged war against independence movements in the former Spanish colonies that the US had just “liberated”.
      I’ve long suspected that America’s involvement in regime change warfare was linked to the birth of mafioso tactics of multinational corporations. Everyone focuses blame on Dole Thurston and John L. Stevens for Hawaii’s partial overthrow in 1893. But who gave the order to land the USS Boston? Whose idea was to encourage the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom’s government?
      Stephen Kinzer, a scholar and journalist correctly labels Dole and Thurston as puppets and exposes how John Watson Foster, and President Harrison were the puppeteers pulling the strings.
      John Watson “Fostered” in a new era of American expansionism by advocating on behalf of American expansionistic corporations. John W. Foster was the first Secretary of State to facilitate America’s first regime change which was one of the Hawaiian Kingdom’s government.
      After his public service his grandson John Foster Dulles stated “Grandfather Foster” after hearing about an account of arduous litigation over a hog in Indiana, decided to stay in Washington “to invent an entirely new profession for himself: broker for corporations seeking favors in Washington and chances to expand abroad.”
      John Watson Foster, former Secretary of State, invented America’s first multinational corporate lobbyist.
