Just informing MaoliWorld members of the on-going struggle in South Dakota against environmental racism. Friends and fellow USD students have related that this peaceful protest ended with arrests made by South Dakota law enforcement who have no jurisdiction in Indian Country. Children and elders were among those arrested.
As you will read in the blog, the hog farm will be located 3 miles from the tribal Head Start program. The impact on the health of tribal members will be staggering, with 70,000 hogs being produced per year. No environmental assessment of this project was done, as well as no public hearings conducted. The Yankton Sioux reservation is located on the Missouri River. And what happens to the aquifer that underlies the reservation.
Just to let you all know, the struggle continues for our relatives in Indian Country.
