LAST CHANCE 2 TESTIFY ON MAKENA RESORT @ THE COUNCIL: STAND FOR MAKENA!FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19TH County Bldg. in Wailukusign in to testify @ 1:30 pmmeeting starts @ 2pmPupus will be provided and New Reggae Save Makena logo t-shirts FREE to early sign-ins.Come share your Mana'o.Citizens can sign in to speak until the last testifier. What's at stake?Remember: There's no plans to build on Makena Beach lands. They are state owned. It is the lands mauka of the park that are proposed to be developed with 4-story hi-density condos* Plenty of benefits for Makena Investors* No guarantee of Jobs or affordable housing for local residents* No verified water source, except the streams of Na Wai Eha or ground waters of East Maui.* Historic lands of Makena would become a gated off "members only" development* Building a private "beach club" with full beach recreation services in Makena means less beach access for local residents.* Sub-standard archaeological review: many sites and even burials are likely to be missed until bulldozers come.* no protection for traditional roads and trailsCouncil will discuss final rezoning conditions for Makena Resort after hearing public testimony. What We Want:* Strong conditions for affordable housing. One unit affordable for 1 unit luxury.Tie affordable housing requirements to present standards (50%) not future standards likely to require less affordables.* Protection of the cultural landscape that exists right across the street from Makena State Park (highest concentration of sites). Hawaiian Homes (600 acre development) in Waiohuli-Keokea has a 100 acre Cultural preserve. Makena deserves the same.* Protection of public access, traditional and historic roads, adequate beach parking.*A project this huge needs to meet high standards & take care of this generation & future generations.Come Testify or contact your council members: county.clerk@mauicounty.us and ask for:* A cultural park preserve to be set aside so we can learn from our cultural landscapes for years to come. Sites separated from one another by development are like books missing pages, it makes it very hard to learn from! The highest concentration is right across the street from the park. This would also create a buffer of open space around the state park, another important factor!* At least 400 units (33%) of affordable housing! A project slated to make 7 Billion dollars in profit and they can't even promise us 33% affordable housing units! Will this set a precedent of all the other big money developers to come?
