LiveHawaiianMusic.com is excited to be bringing you a live broadcast from the legendary Pahinui Waimanalo Homestead on September 27th, 2009 at 1pm featuring Cyril Pahinui and Don Kaulia. This Kanikapila and Workshop is put on monthly by Cyril Pahinui, son of Hawaiian Music legend Gabby Pahinui.During the 80's the Waimanalo Homestead became legendary for the Kanikapila Jam Sessions that took place there. Now Cyril continues the tradition, by putting on these monthly workshop and jam sessions. Started in August 2008, these gatherings were reestablished to perpetuate and preserve the uniqueness of Hawaii's music. The Pahinui’s Waimanalo home attracted legendary musicians including slack key masters Leland “Atta” Isaacs, Sonny Chillingworth, and Ray Kane, along with David “Feet” Rogers, Joe Marshall and ukulele virtuoso Eddie Kamae. Weekend's at the Pahinui home were a continuous jam session as the Pahinui's hosted dozens of musicians both young and old who came by to jam with "the Master."With the welcoming pot of beef stew and rice always on the stove, the Waimanaolo home became the perfect setting for the revitalization of Hawai‘i's musical traditions. As Gabby and the home grew in fame, attendance in the weekend jam sessions mushroomed, sometimes-hosting a hundred or more musicians and fans. The jam sessions would begin early on Friday mornings and continue until straight through to Monday mornings. It was especially inspiring for the young, aspiring players, many of whom went on to become today’s leading Hawaiian musicians and slack key masters.Workshops are held once monthly usually on the third or fourth Sunday of each month at the Waimanalo Homestead. There is a fee of $40 per session. Sessions begin at 1:00 and go to 3-4:00. Instruction at the series is provided by Cyril Pahinui. Serious students under the age of 25 may attend at no charge.
