  • I like the fact that brother here is making a short film to educate, however, I think he should work on his history. For example, the queen did not try to provide suffrage for native Hawaiian subjects of the Kingdom or even foreign laborers of Asian descent.
First off, the native Hawaiian subjects of the Kingdom were never denied suffrage, they had always voted since the beginning of the Kingdom even till that point. However, there were voting qualifications which were re-introduced by the cabinet installed during the Bayonet Constitution. These qualifications required that the voter meet income qualifications and property qualifications irregardless of ethnicity.
Secondly, it makes no sense to give voting rights to foreign laborers who are not even citizens of the country. The whole point of giving non-citizens of European descent the right to vote in elections was to off-set the majority native Hawaiian vote. Allowing Asian sector of the foreign labor force would have been pointless, considering that even with the foreigners vote and the property/income qualifications, the native Hawaiian vote was still the majority vote. Go figure. All of the previous cabinet members installed during the Bayonet Constitution were ousted from office during the next election.
What precipitate the Overthrow of 1893 was her desire to re-install stronger powers to the monarch in the Constitution.
