Kawaipuna - Halawa Valley - April 1992 - Out of the Blue Interview

Kawaipuna Prejean's last known interview, less than a week before his passing on April 14. Filmed during the occupation of the Hale o Papa in Halawa Valley about April 9, 1992 by Naomi Sodetani, Out of the Blue Productions (Mahalo Naomi!!). Crucial mana'o; definitely a "must" for "sovereign studies". Kawaipuna was such an amazing visionary of the Kanaka Maoli movement, and an awesome person. I sometimes wonder if he knew he was going when he did this interview, because he was really on a roll with the mana'o -- I never saw him quite like this any other time; it was like he just had to say it all. This was the day after he had spent the night in the valley with the Women of Hale o Papa. Masa had driven 5 of us up there the day before, and we had an awesome jam that night, which included Kawaipuna and Didi Lee Kwai, among others. The rest of us went home late in the night, but Kawaipuna stayed. No blanket, nothing. He was such an awesome man, with so much vision.B/t/w I'm putting together a long-overdue webpage for Kawaipuna, and I've been collecting stories, pictures, mana'o, etc. as well. If anyone has anything to contribute, please let me know -- I really appreciate it! Please comment, too! Mahalo!video footage ©1992 Out of the Blue Productions

  • I had a hard time hearing what Kawaipuna was saying....wish the audio was louder.
Keep me posted on when his webpage is available. I never met Kawaipuna, I wish I did.
