Founded in the late 1840's, Kalama was named after John Kalama, a Hawaiian native who settled in the area after marrying the daughter of a Nisqually chief. In 1895 the first salmon fish hatchery in Washington State was built along the Kalama River. Both the Kalama Falls and Fallert Creek Hatcheries can be visited and are located along the Kalama River and Columbia River.
