This is what we've been saying regarding claimants to the throne. The video is a must see to understand the dynamics. To go further, the pool of candidates now go back to the selected children of the Royal School. Only two survived the Queen; Jane Loeau and Maheha. These would have been eligible candidates. As it stands, a descendant of Maheha (I believe) was Theresa Malani who was hanai'd by Lili'uokalani and she had two sons. Today, they would be the likeable candidates for the throne if it would continue as they are the living descendants of Maheha. Again, they would have to be approved by the conditions of the Constitution. None of the descendants of the original children of the Royal School is alive save them. They would have to be approved by the House of Nobles and the Legislature and so would their marriages. So this is the dilemma that we are faced with. If they fail to meet the criteris; then will it open up to all other descendants of Ali'i under the same criteria. In 2008, this rule of law is somewhat outdated and it will be up to the people whether to continue with the monarchy or turn to a republic. There is also the possibility that the "monarch" would be just a figurehead. The option being, money talks and that would give notice of opening up who would be given that consideration. The other problem is if we go the way of Hawaiian protocol or Western protocol. There is more that is not mentioned in the video that that a candidate is subject to and the criteria that is expected. Maybe it would be better to abrogate the monarchy and start from scratch since most Hawaiians can claim descendancy of an ali'i in one form or another. Many would fail the conditions established by the constitution anyway. So, let's not rest on the laurels of our ancestors but make them proud that we do not tarnish their name and "genes". Just know who you come from and be the best individual you can be; one that they will be proud of.
