  • Federal recognition, wow!. Never did, never will occur as long as under U.S. control! On pepa yeh, but do we have to ubject oursleves to what happened to Native Indians. are they doing any better today then when U.S. did the same thing to them too! Is it recognition to serve who - kanaka maoili or U.S. I agree with Keanu Sai, very akamai. There must be a focal point in educating our own po'e out there. Perhaps the po'e feel that the AKAKA BILL is the only justly thing for all kanaka maoli, they don't bother about it, just take it and get it over with. Is that what we want?
  • The United States has violated its Trust Obligation to the Hawaiian Homestead Act. United States has also violated it Trust Obligation to the Hawaii State Admission Act. For 116 United States has occupied the Hawaiian Kingdom and its national lands. 116 years of Justice Delayed is Justice Denied. Restored The Hawaiian Kingdom, ALOHA OE, U.S.A.
  • Paiea wrote "Too bad each group has their own agenda instead of ONE Hawaiian agenda" but to me they are pro-oiwi and there is nothing wrong with that. On the other hand, while some people claim is the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act is really the Native Hawaiian Land Reorganization Act

These people who are pro-Akaka Bill aka "the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act" claim that Hawaiians will somehow get "free" land which is lame because the land is already theirs in title. They like to build a tagline... to try to get people to go along with them which to me shady.

I've mentioned this before but a huge red flag is that the Department of Interior will be the managing lead office.

    http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=s110-310

"SEC. 6. NATIVE HAWAIIAN INTERAGENCY COORDINATING GROUP.

    (a) Establishment- In recognition that Federal programs authorized to address the conditions of Native Hawaiians are largely administered by Federal agencies other than the Department of the Interior, there is established an interagency coordinating group to be known as the `Native Hawaiian Interagency Coordinating Group'.

Composition- The Interagency Coordinating Group shall be composed of officials, to be designated by the President, from--

    (1) each Federal agency that administers Native Hawaiian programs, establishes or implements policies that affect Native Hawaiians, or whose actions may significantly or uniquely impact Native Hawaiian resources, rights, or lands; and

    (2) the Office.

    (c) Lead Agency-

    (1) IN GENERAL- The Department of the Interior shall serve as the lead agency of the Interagency Coordinating Group.

    (2) MEETINGS- The Secretary shall convene meetings of the Interagency Coordinating Group."

No thanks. I do not want to deal with more bureaucratic bottleneck B.S. Yet they insist that somehow Hawaiians will magically all get housing. We are already supposed to be helped by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs which is on the "state" level yet roughly half of us live beyond Hawai'i which to me means that approximately half of us left are STILL homeless. I can only imagine what it will be like on the federal level. The way that I see it... they do not give a crap about us. They only care about the land and money so for me it's not about eating pies though I do love my desserts. It's about doing the right thing and not allowing any Hawaiian to be homeless.

As for housing for ALL Hawaiians... I am all for that. Those people in positions who can directly make this possible... choose not to do so and instead choose to allow the rest of us to drown but yes I am pro-iwi and pro-housing for ALL Hawaiians. Preferably in the form of shared ownership in the form of condos and/or co-ops on land being held in trust for Hawaiians. For some non-Hawaiians too. I would want to include some who would not otherwise be able to afford housing. Now THAT would be great!

However housing for Hawaiians is not mutually exclusive to the Akaka Bill... though some of its supporters try to make it seem like it is. Housing can be built for Hawaiians without the Akaka Bill and I can't wait for that day when housing is built for ALL Hawaiians in the form of shared ownership (condos which is shared ownership of a building and co-operatives which is shared ownership in a corporation which leases the units to the home owner(s.) Now THAT would be fantastic! Despite what some people deceptively claim though... this can be done without the Akaka Bill but they try to instill fear in us because fear typically induces a reaction. I remain hopeful....
  • Aloha e Namaka'eha,
Thanks for the friend request! As for the Akaka bill, many people such as Ku Ching, Keanu Sai, David Ingham and others have the mana'o that it is designed to complete the land grab and take title away from kanaka maoli, in the guise of offering "federal recognition."
Keanu Sai ma have been putting out some good info about how the kingdom still exists, under international law, and hey -- don't let the U.S. talk any of the maoli out of knowing this!!! Ku'e!
As a supporter of Hawaiian independence, I like your agenda.
I even think the hotel industry needs to set aside a certain percentage of their rooms as transitional housing for homeless maoli families -- but that's just me! (And that idea is just a band-aid for a very deep, very complex problem involving the theft of the kingdom...)
    Warmly,
    Amy
  • How many groups are there? We can all enjoy the piece of the pie, why settle for less? I'm sure they all met at one time or another. Does each group serve a greater purpose to serve kanaka maoli? I'm still on the waiting list after 23 years, not bad for consistency, Then you got to qualify to purchase or so forth.

What would you like to see on the HAWAIIAN AGENDA. That is a good point being made and often we don't share. There is no right or wrong answer, yet the struggles that we face are real whether in academics or so forth. Here is what I would like to be on the HAWAIIAN AGENDA:

    1. A hale debt free.for every kanaka maoli.
    2. 'Olelo Hawaii taught K-12 in every school in Hawaii, not only Hawaiian emergent.
    3. Total independence from U.S.
    4. Groups to come together and LOKAHI and be on the same page to serve our po'e!
  • Aloha Namaka'eha,
I used to think that way until a friend told me why settle for one piece of the pie when the whole pie belongs to you. It made me think "Hey that's right"! - A classic case of 'Stockholm Syndrome' (see wikipedia for details). I wish we would all see through the same window on this sovereignty issue. We need to LOKAHI as ONE Nation, not individual sovereign groups fighting amongst ourselves. How will the greater powers that be stop us? By provoking us to break their laws so that they can put us 'away' and by encouraging disagreements between us. Too bad each group has their own agenda instead of ONE Hawaiian agenda.
