Voice Support for Fish Bills in the State Legislature

Two bills in the Legislature have once again been introduced to try and save what fish we have left on our reefs. SB578 and HB694 will create bag limits for uhu, kumu, moana kali and munu and allow the taking of just two per species per day for the island of Maui only.

Bag limits are a key regulatory tool as it affects all types of fishing methods and is very easy to enforce.

Maui residents have tried to pass this bill since it was first introduced in 2008 but opposition on Oahu has prevented its passage in the past. We need your kokua in the form of e-mails and testimony in support of these bills.

Our Maui legislators are in key positions in the Legislature this year, we have hope. But without your support, we will be forced to live with the status quo and continue to watch Maui's reefs suffer and degrade.

You can do your part by visiting the Hawaii Legislature website and tracking these bills and providing testimony. You can call your Maui legislator and let them know these bills are important to you. The fight for natural resources has no end and it needs tireless champions to make these bills into law. It's time again for us to step up and make a difference.

  • Do you know why Oahu opposed the bag limits.  And what evidence do you have that would support your assertion that your two per species per day is the right solution to the problem that one is saying exist?

Did you check with the old timers, I am sure you know some of them on Maui, this does not sound right within the 3 mile limit and too limitless after 3 miles.  Just asking!
