There have been some troubling findings in health news recently. Gertraud Maskarinec and colleagues from the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii found that, regardless of weight, diabetes was at least two times more common among ethnic groups than whites. Also, from a Honolulu Advertiser article: More people are visiting community health centers which provide medical, dental and mental health services to underserved populations, including the uninsured, under-insured, low-income people, immigrants, the elderly, those who live in rural areas and the homeless. Although patient use is increasing, current funding will not provide for program growth. Emmanuel Kintu, Kalihi-Palama Health Center executive director, said his center saw a 21 percent increase in the number of uninsured people it served in 2008, compared with 2007. He said many of the uninsured had recently lost their jobs or seen big cuts to their work hours. Kintu said the tough economic times are forcing his center and others statewide to consider some difficult choices to stay afloat. Those could include turning patients away, he said, or laying off workers.During these tough times, we urge everyone to take responsibility for improving their health and the health of their families. Lā‘au lapa‘au is a cost-effective, natural way to increase physical, mental, and spiritual health, and it’s something you can easily do for yourself. We hope that you try to eat well, sleep, exercise, drink lots of water, and try to decrease stress (maybe through exercise, laughter, meditation, reflecting on the good stuff in your life). Also, incorporating koa (warriors) such as nīoi (chili pepper), ‘ōlena (tumeric), kalika (garlic), and awapuhi (ginger) will strengthen your body. These koa are easy to find and easy to add to your diet. But to learn more, visit our event on April 17. For more info, there's a listing under Events. Please feel free to contact us also.

  • I just came off a 10-day Master Cleanse, with 3 days of breaking the cleanse w/ pure, fresh squeezed orange and lemon juice. In addition to loosing 13 lbs., my skin and mind was clear, I felt energized and much healthier than when I started. I have maintained a diet of mostly fruits, vegetables and whole grains, eating primarily fish and nuts for protein. Cleansing and changing what we eat can affect your health tremendously. Today, eating well and staying away from processed foods and junk, fast foods is critical with all the recalls that have been going on lately....tomates, peanuts, pistachio just to name a few. Our food supply is tainted, all the more reason to buy locally or better yet, grow your own. In addition to artificial flavors, colorings and preservatives to increase shelf life, genetically modified food has been in our food suppy since 1996, without our knowledge. No labeling required. Take back CONTROL of your FOOD and HEALTH. Anything w/ Canola Oil, Soybeans or soybean bi-products and cotton-seed oil is more than likely GMO, unless it is organic or labeled specifically NON-GMO. Corn Syrup is the biggest culprit and it is put in nearly every processed food product on the market. READ LABELS, or better yet, stay away from processed food. I have witnessed family member after family member succumb to illnesses that could've been prevented by living a healthy lifestyle. Instead, they took the pharmecutical drugs fed to them by their doctors and than dealt with multiple side affects of these drugs. In the end, it was the inability of the body to tolerate all the drugs in their weakened state that hastened death. Healthy food, excercise and reducing stress will work wonders to ensure a long, illness-free life. Should you get sick, incorporating these healing laau into your life will help tremendously. Have faith in the teaching of our kupuna who were healthy up until the introduction of Western disease, a loss of land for raising kalo, loss of access to fishing resources and an end to their traditional diets. Nana i ke kumu. Look to the source..... our kupuna.
