Shark Aumakua and love of a woman

It was during the summer of 1969, that my class mate Jerry Belledo of Pahala. and I went with his sister Jane and her older boy friend to Kona.Uncle ,sorry I can;t remember your name so I'll call you Uncle, Okay.Uncle drove from Kona to Pahala one morning to pick us up and take us to a beach in Kona. The roads were not like today. It was winding, hilly and narrow. It is over 100 miles between Pahala and Kona.Uncle is pure Kanaka Maoli from Kona and braddah is one crazy driver....uncle floor the gas pedal..was good fun..like riding roller coaster for 100 miles....He knows the road good because he drives here everyday to see Jane in Pahala.. Brah that is love...Drive that far for his girl...Uncle you solid! We had to hike about a mile in to this secluded beach in Kona ,where get wild donkeys. The beach was white coarse coral sand mix with black sand. Jerry and I jumped in with our goggles and spear guns. The first thing we saw on the bottom were hundreds of fish bones. It was actually hundreds of baby shark bones. I remember grabbing all the jaws of these sharks...That was cool.. Jerry and I were just triping out.Uncle was swimming by himself while Jane was sun bathing on the beach the natural way...nah..she had bikini...shucks...sorry Jerry.Anyway,Uncle was about 50 yards out from Jerry and I swimming among a group of fishes. He made a circle around those fishes and swam towards us. Uncle swam like a fish from side to side and when he swam next to us I reached out to touch his back and it was like sand paper like a shark skin.We had to go back home to Pahala, so Uncle drove us on his rolller coaster back to Pahala and he hugged us and kiss Jane then drove home to Kona.Thank you Uncle for that one day trip to your beach in Kona.Oh I forgot to tell you that those fishes........Were sharks....ManoBobby E 2009

My Dad passed a year ago and so ever more strongly I gravitate to that aumakua.

You know me very well . Hawaiians always have tests....riddles...the old Hawaiian way of life......

Namaka'eha , correcf one of our families aumakua was Pele's brother Ka-moho-Ali'i and another relative was Kua the Great RED Shark from Kahiki. There is a name chant about Kua where he came to Ka'u from Kahiki.

Kua is a Keliikoa . Riding on his back was his beloved sister having human form. She landed in Punalu'u and married a Chief of Ka'u. Their babies still live here today and around the world.

Mahalo nrv8n8,Tane and Namaka'eha. Until time we'll meet again.....

Spooky stories...I have tons nrv8n8...Why do people like spooky stories....in the future I'll give a story...

The other aumakua of ours is the Pueo. My classmate Jose Ballo of Waimea knows the story..He works as a chef in a hotel at Kona. He and I...well I'll tell the story one day...about our sacred Pueo...Ask Jose Ballo for now..

    Aloha no

  • It sounds like near Keahole area or going down to Kona Village. Maybe near Queens Bath on Boise-Cascade Property or what used to be theirs. ??? Is this a test? LOL....

I've heard of a similar story at Hana side on Mau'i, too. There used to be a kid back in the 60s that used to swim with the mano. His grandfather made a final trip to Tahiti to see some family by canoe back in about 1958. I wish I could remember his name; a really nice person.
  • Hey, at least it was your amakua!
  • Was this in Ka'upulehu - Four Seasons area after Waikoloa or past Captain Cook on the other side of Hualalai Mountain. I've heard stories of the donkeys crossing from one shoreline to the other from travels over the mountain. If you can see Kohala Mountain and Kawaihae from the beach you were at than it's Ka'upulehu side.

If it was closer to Kailua-Kona it must have been of Ali'i Drive where theres TONS of historic and archaeological sites on that coastline - especially one beach zoned especially for the mano there...can't remember the name but I think I have a video bout that one beach off Ali'i Drive on my page.

Mahalo for sharing your story...you know any spooky kine...LOL I like those spooky kine stories....LOL
