ORAL HISTORIES FROM PO'E OF MOLOKA'I

It is amazing to be called and informed that aunt Mary Kawena Pukui had done interviews with po'e from Moloka'i. Of the many she had done, she had done two with my father Pekelo Namaka'eha. I can only imagine what he said or may have said at that time in 1961. I want to send a big mahalo to a close friend, Shane Pale who called to let me know. I was also asked to be part of recording of "Oral Histories of Moloka'i." There are so many families with mana'o to share. I ask Ke Akua to bless and care for our kupuna then and now.If you know you had family in the 1960's on Moloka'i and live on O'ahu, let me know. Perhaps your kupuna was recorded too and you are tracing your lineage. I can see if the inoa is on record. I'm not sure how many she interviewed, but it doesn't hurt to check! This is just one way our families perpetuated and share their history as well as mana'o!Researching genealogy comes in many forms - by other family members, land records, archives, books, etc. Malama the po'e who helps you open new doors and always give thanks to Akua!

  • Just an update. I'm not sure who it was on the tape, it was in 'Olelo Hawaii and the kanaka wahine was transcribing mo'olelo to English.
  • Aloha,

There was no Townsend 'ohana that I saw on the list. I saw a Dudiot and Elia 'ohana along with my father. I'll be looking at the list again later.
  • You may never know you are related until you do your part!
  • Ah yes, the Townsend who married into the Rodrigues if I remember correctly offhand. Plenny Rodrigues, didn't realize how huge that family is.
  • I have rescheduled a meeting with him and will inquire about these na inoa. Townsend sounds familiar, my mother would know your family. I'm surprised cause when I was at the Bishop Museum a decade ago, no such recordings were available. By far, it will give families an opportunity to share with their 'ohana!
  • Aloha mai e Namaka'eha,

I have relatives from Moloka'i...the Townsends, Ayau's, Rodrigues, Kekahuna/Holau...all descendants of Harriet Blanchard who married a John Smith Townsend. Harriet's parents were Kahalokahoupokapu and Andrew Henri Blanchard. They come from the aina of Kamalo and Pelekunu but have migrated elsewhere on Moloka'i and O'ahu. Another relative of mine was a Joseph Aiwohi Kawai. Born in North Kohala, moved to Moloka'i. Thought I would mention these inoa on the chance that Kupuna Kawena interviewed one of these family members. Mahalo Namaka'eha for your generous offer to inquire for those of us on Maoli World. Malama pono....Miliaulani
