Obama: Hawaii's Native Son

The past couple of nights, our local CBS news (Los Angeles) had a segment about Obama and his tie to Hawaii and growing up. They teased that they will interview people he knew and show us his upbringing (more or less) in the islands.I missed the first one, but got to see yesterday's one and was not so surprised by some inaccuracies. The common one, saying that he is from the "island" of Hawai'i. *With an 'Alex Trebek' voice, "No, the correct answer is 'What is O'ahu.'"*But one thing that got me that they said about 3 times was that Obama was Hawaii's Native Son. They said that Hawaii considered him their Native Son. I remember hearing that a long time ago, but I guess I never thought of what that means really. So, is that just a nice way to connect a kama'aina to the islands? Just curious, because I was kinda irritated when I heard that, but when I googled "native son", I was surprised to see Obama's name attached, so maybe I misunderstood the meaning of it.Anyone...your mana'o on this?

  • I had another thought... you can RUN but you CANNOT HIDE LOL

I say this because as much as I want to be a hermit living on a compound like how the DeSilva side of my family used to have a compound... there is NOWHERE to hide. No where *L*
  • WTH???? LOL Economics is like everything else.... They try to make it seem complicated in order to weed people out of that field and/or from people taking control. They want to control uh everything. It's a huge mind game.

Anyway why you going leave??? LOL You know what makes me laugh as well is that no matter where we wanna move there will ALWAYS be people and where there is people there will always be pilau. Just a thought LMAO
  • Yep... dark skinned and underprivileged... and some people treat them as though they are worse than dirt!

I feel that when I am with my father who is dark. Some people look down on him and treat him as though he is dumb and/or lazy. He's not. He has busted his ass for years. He has helped lots of people in Hawai'i. I know of other dark skinned braddahs as well. They get little to no respect. They don't get the recognition that they deserve. On the other hand, Messiah Obama gets credit when he is what... a person of privilege LOL

Of course the whole "I will fix the economy" makes me laugh because anyone who knows about economics knows that the economy occurs in phases... or waves. After recession is recovery but oh noooo Messiah Obama is the ONE who will "fix" it. NO ONE CAN FIX IT. NO ONE! But Messiah Obama tries to elevate himself over everyone and says that HE can fix it.

That does a disservice to EVERYONE and that is exactly what White Privilege can do. Even though one has darker skin with money and power they can treat others worse than dirt. Like The Bird. She acts as though power has not corrupted her... or Messiah Obama. It has.

In the mean time da dark skinned braddahs (and sistahs too) who bust their ass get NO recognition in da aina. Instead a person of privilege gets "native son of Hawai'i" when the dark skinned braddahs (and sistahs too) havs busted their ass to make Hawai'i what "it" is today. THAT annoys me. And yeah that person hmmm odd how it all came into play.... I swear... it's a sign!!! LOL And I doubt it is a "coincidence." Makes me wonder when things like this happen. It's a reminder that dark skinned people who are underprivileged are still disrespected in the aina and I no like dat....

    Latahs!
  • Now that's one thing I wished I fully understood, economics...as hard as it is to comprehend. But this is why, when I get on that plane to Brasil...I'll purposely make myself lost there! I won't come back! Or, this summer when I go to WA for my niece's wedding, I'll cross into Canada and not come back. lol
  • Speaking of dark skinned, remember what I told you in email about someone and mine as well as other people's perception? Because they kinda look popolo, and the whole poverty thing? lol Hoailona, all of these are coming into play now.
  • "Oh wow, thanks for the link. Didn't realize that was a book and that it goes way back when. You're definitely about the privilege part regarding Obama. :) And damn, you know the details on his gramma huh. lol"

    Howzit Kalani.

Yeah... a shout out to da DARK skinned braddahs who are the TRUE native sons LOL Seriously.... it is so annoying when they portray Obama as the Messiah and as someone who was poor. To me that is underprivileged and no... he was not poor. Instead he was a child of privilege yet they try to insist that he is one of "us" which does a disservice to everyone of us and/or our parents who were/are poor who have struggled and/or who continue to struggle. Annoying.

"But you say it annoys you as how they portray him as being poor. I saw people portraying him as underprivilege, like in that stupid debunkingwhite forum with that stupid futurebird character and everyone attacked me...maybe it was somewhere else, because I tried to point out to them that Obama's skin color has nothing to do with how they perceive he has grown up, and that because he went to a good school that he was treated like those others who went to that school. Yet people attacked me for it, because they didn't understand that. Even Estrella knew what I meant by that. lol"

To me being poor correlates with being underprivileged. When one is poor one does not have access to privileges like a home, a good school, food to eat, and/or shelter over their head. Obama had a home and graduated from Punahou. There are many braddahs out there who are DARK who do not have ANY privileges and have dark skin and bust their ass yet get little to NO recognition for breaking their backs and helping make Hawai'i what it is today so when people say he was poor and/or underprivileged to me it's saying the same lame thing which is untrue yet they mistakenly conflate the color of his skin to being "poor" and as a native son of Hawai'i. Sorry but the braddahs who are dark skinned who break their back and/or bust their asses in Hawai'i are the native sons of Hawai'i which Da Bird does not seem to understand even though she like act like the pseudo intellectual there LMAO

One of my other friends (who is oiwi and haole) and I had an argument about it a few years ago. I told him that while he was poor he had light skin while many oiwi kane do not. I told him that White Privilege can and DOES help whether oiwi or popolo. It crosses racial, ethnic, and national origin lines. If you look, act, and/or sound haole you can get White Privilege. If you have family who have money you can get White Privilege which is what Obama has: White PRIVILEGE.

The dark skinned braddahs who cannot "pass" for white and/or who do not have family who have money... well they are the ones who get my respect. They do not have White Privilege like Obama has yet they bust their ass while Obama is dark skinned but he did not have to overcome poverty and had access to White Privilege.

Anyway IMO da dark skinned braddahs who "despite" the darkness of their skin compounded with poverty (which is so damned difficult or can be)... struggle AND overcome. THEY are the native sons of Hawai'i. They deserve it... NOT people like Da Bird's Messiah, Obama. Unfortunately some people are so infatuated with him and/or with his message of hope. Reality will set in eventually but for now... da dark skinned braddahs who were and/or are poor and who bust their ass get my respect... NOT Messiah Obama who is a person of privilege, who had White Privilege, and who had access to some things that native sons of Hawai'i do not.

  • Okay... I noticed you called while I was working out LOL But "Native Son" is a book about a popolo in abject poverty which does a disservice to popolos who really do live in abject poverty because President Elect Obama was a child of privilege. To me sorry but he is no native son of Hawai'i because he was not born into poverty with the burden of the color of his skin:

    http://www.amazon.com/Native-Son-Richard-Wright/dp/0060809779

The native sons are those kane who have struggled and/or who continue to struggle in the aina. Unfortunately those native sons get no to little recognition. They are basically invisible. Meanwhile people like Obama who was a child of privilege pretend as though they have felt that struggle within... while in poverty.

He graduated from Punahou which was expensive as it is now and his grandmother was a former VP at Bank of Hawai'i. Frankly... it annoys me when they portray him as being one of us (i.e. poor) when he was not. He was a child of privilege while many kane in the islands are not children of privilege. THEY are the native sons of Hawai'i. The dark skinned kane who not only have to face racism based on the color of their skin and their national origin but also face the fight against abject poverty.

FWIW I dislike the hype about him. It is really annoying because I know plenny bradahs who are dark and who have struggled and continue to struggle. They are the native sons of Hawai'i... not Obama.
