West Africa Building & Construction Exhibition & Seminars is returning to Nigeria for 2012 after a spectacularly successful 2011 show in Accra, Ghana.
With an estimated growth rate in 2010 of 6.8%, Nigeria ranks number 27 in the world for this index, according the CIA Factbook hammer crusher. The country’s then finance minister, Olusegun Aganga, predicted towards the end of 2010 that the country’s growth rate would be in double digits by the end of 2012, if the country's infrastructure and privatisation programme is successfully implemented.
Nigeria’s construction industry is growing fast and is likely to grow astronomically over the next decade, according to forecasts made in a June 2010 report by Global Construction Perspectives and Oxford Economics. Estimates suggest that current growth in the construction industry is greater than that of India. Nigeria’s population of approximately 154 million is urbanizing at one of the fastest rates in the world, while construction is now only 3.2% of GDP. “From 2009 to 2020, only Nigeria and India will enjoy higher growth rates for Raymond mill than China in their construction output,” says the report.
Domestic banks are planning to establish a transport infrastructure fund that would see US$ 15 billion invested in the sector each year. Progress has also been made on a number of beleaguered road developments in Lagos, Osun and Oyo states over the turn of the year. Daewoo is expected to sign a formal contract with Total E&C Nigeria Ltd for a new coal-fired power plant in H111, with the project most likely built in the coal-rich South-East of the country. Arrangements have reached an advanced stage between the Bauchi State government and a German firm for the commencement of a 110 megawatt (MW) state-owned power plant.
The Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola, at the end of May 2011 took an oath for his second term in office with these words: ”The accessible and affordable housing and market schemes driven by reasonable mortgage tenures, the expansion of access to potable water supply, and waste water and sewage treatment will be at the forefront of our developmental and budgeting initiatives”.
Exhibitors at West Africa Building & Construction 2012 will be able to take part in the accompanying seminar programme, which will be run in co-ordination with the Ministry of Water Resources, Works, Housing & Urban Development. Exhibitors will have the opportunity to give a presentation, but places will be limited. If you wish to give a presentation, please inform the organiser as soon as possible. Presentations will be 20-25 minutes. The programme will provide an ideal opportunity for exhibitors to get to know the problems and needs of the sector in West Africa, and to provide information on their products and services to a large number of delegates, some of whom will be invited by the Ministry and local NGOs, and some by the exhibitors themselves. The seminar will be held in the Abuja International Conference Centre alongside the exhibition.
