This blog entry was inspired by the recent post initiated by Tane about supporting the US Manifest Destiny doctrines. I was writing out my thoughts in my journal & decided to share them here.First, with my own condensed version of the definition as: The United States' destined, apparent & divinely ordained expansion across the north American continent and into the Pacific. This whole idea that Haoles feel it is destined to happen where they or their society will eventually take control or be the common society or occurance. With that concept, it's understandable how blood quantum was born. They knew that with Haole expansion (or Manifest Destiny) the original people of these lands have to go somewhere. If they're not killed off, they would be assimilated. And because those advocates or believers of manifest destiny doctrines realized how they or their predecessors screwed the original peoples out of everything, and as a means to make it up, they provide some type of compensation, as a means to say that they're sorry. But what they end up doing is deciding who is entitled to such compensation or benefits by dictating who is or who isn't "native" based on their implemented blood quantum percentage. Exactly who decides how much blood quantum is sufficient is irrelevant. This is a foreign concept, a Haole one used for the original peoples.Because of this means to gauge who qualifies for benefits, everyone, including the beneficiaries blieve this is how we define these particular ethnic groups or nations. In other words, everyone gets to decide who is or who isn't _____ (fill in w/ appropriate indigenous group's name) based on the blood quantum specified. But if it's not that, it is other aspects of that person's culture or even personal characteristics that is quantified. That means, people are judged on how much ____ (again, fill in appropriate ethnicity/nationality) you really are based on whatever they feel is a characteristic or trait of that particular group. This is all a result of manifest destiny. The "expansion" isn't just a physical, tangible thing to be seen, but rather it is the idea that helps accomplish the results of the entire expansion.
while Manifest Destiny is a great topic when some issues are discussed the focus is on America.
I focused on the object & kept on using ORIGINAL PEOPLE, as a means to get a more general if not inclusive approach just to point out that these people (both living on the mainland & in the Hawn isles) have the idea that eventually things are to happen they way they believe b/c of this doctrine, that basically we won't have a say in our own destiny rather it'll happen the way they think it should, which it has been, but that's not the case.
I agree with Kaohi and know some people on homestead who feel as though they cannot use their voice less they be evicted like how they did to Patrick Kahawaiola'a of Keaukaha.
I seem to misspell his name a lot btw.
But they try to distract us with
blood quantum
coqui
etc
That is why while some oiwi are away ironically it is some of those who are not imprisoned by the usurpers so are more likely to help manifest our destiny as legal heirs.
I totally agree with you so fight hard and kick butt about the bloodquantum; you have my permission to take that disgusting political act and send it to hell.
I grew up on homestead and am presently a leasee on homestead or homeland a changed name. It hurts --the quantum hurts! It hurt so much that most homesteaders prefer to go numb/dumb. It is their way of coping with a wealthy mans gain for power. We are all in a trap and can't get out of it's gripping hold. What we have is 200,000 acres that, if and when they are (homestead'ers) educated will be able to secure these lands for native Hawaiians. It won't happen in my time, but possibly in the future. And having said that, the rest of the crown lands should either go first or second after that our ocean and mauka resources. De-occupation is a must and I know this will happen in the near future. You should know --- considering que aprendió español para cumplir con los hombres LOL --> I am sure you understand that part lol
